ALTERNATIVE PATTERNS TO USE
22 Beaumont Texture (knit)
This delightfully lacy pattern is quick
and easy to knit and looks good
worked in most weights of yarn.
82 Delicate Lace (crochet)
Bands of pretty crochet lace are
divided by bands of solidly worked
stitches to make a soft fabric with
good drape.
100 Fishtail Lace (knit)
Many of the classic lace stitches, such
as this pretty fishtail pattern, knit into
wonderful wraps, whether plain or
striped.
• 166 Norfolk Shells (crochet)
Similar in construction to Delicate Lace
(above), this pattern is less lacy and
would make a substantial winter wrap.

of strong colors look good against a plain background, or work the
stitch in deeper six-row stripes

Ripple patterns for pillow covers
Ripple patterns make stylish pillow covers, whether they
are worked in knit or crochet. Buy ready-made pillow
forms to cover or give your existing ones a new lease of
life by making a set of stylish covers in a new color
scheme. Choose new yarns to make your covers or mix
and match yarns from your stash for a unique result.
Knit or crochet?
Both techniques work well, although crochet is probably the
better technique to use for making home furnishings. A piece of
crochet grows fast and produces a denser, more hard-wearing
fabric than knitting. Always make a gauge swatch first; this will
let you check the hand of the fabric and the effect of your
chosen colors as well as helping you make sure that the
finished item will be the right size.
Choosing the stitch pattern
Choose a stitch pattern that is closely worked to minimize
stretch and ensure durability in use. Avoid all-over lace stitch
patterns or those with lacy areas as these can catch and snag on
fingers and jewelry. Suggested stitches are shown on page 33.
Combining colors and yarns
There are several interesting ways of arranging colors on a
pillow cover. The eight colors on the rectangular pillow are
arranged in two-row stripes, shading from a creamy, natural
white through to dark specked brown. On the square pillow,
one color (yarn A) is the most predominant and is used to
divide stripes worked in the other two colors. You Could also
take a more random approach by using a wider range of colors
and working varying depths of stripes. Buy a hard-wearing yarn
made from pure wool or Cotton for making your pillow covers.

Ripple patterns
for scarves
Ripple stitch patterns make fantastic scarves. You can
work stitches across the width of a scarf in the same
way as the Mohair Wrap on pages 68-69 or be more
adventurous and work the pattern in long stripes
running along a scarf from end to end. This creates a
scarf with two long wavy edges, and there's no need
to darn in the yarn ends as they are cleverly
incorporated into the fringe at each end. Raid your
stash and mix and match thin, thick, textured, and
novelty yarns to make this wonderful zigzag scarf.
Knit or crochet?
Crochet is probably the better technique to use when
making an end-to-end scarf as there is no limit to the
number of repeats you can work. To knit this type of scarf,
you'll need to work back and forth on a long circular
needle as single-point needles will be too short to
accommodate the large number of stitches required.
Choosing the stitch pattern
You can use many of the stitch patterns in the book to
make an end-to-end scarf, although it’s best to choose one
with a fairly small repeat as this will create neatly waving
edges. Suggested stitches are shown on page 51.
Combining colors and yarns
Choose yams from the same color palette or mix and
match colors randomly. Almost any weight of yam is
suitable for making this type of scarf, and it's the perfect
way of using up lots of odds and ends of yarns from your
slash. Use fine yarns, working with two, three, or more
strands together to give the right thickness, or combine a
fine, textured yarn with a smooth one from the same color
palette to make your own individual yarn.

Hook: Size I (6mm) or size needed
to achieve a suitable fabric.
Foundation chain: Multiple of 11
chains plus 2.
Gauge: Variable, depending on lhe
yams selected, but try to make a
fairly soft fabric with good drape
so the scarf will sit nicely round
your neck.
Size and colors: The scarf in the
photograph was worked in a
selection of yarns based around a
color palette of mauve, purple and
blue. The scarf measures 8'Zin x 71 in
(22cm x 180cm) including fringes.
Yarn requirements: Selection of
different yarns including double
knitting weight (used double), Aran
weight, mohair, tape, effect, eyelash,
and textured yarns. Combine lhe
finer yarns to make a thicker weight
that matches that of two strands of
double knitting yarn. You'll need
about 20 yds (18.3m) of each strand
of yarn to work one row of pattern,
including ends for fringing.
Working the zigzag scarf
Make the required length of
foundation chain to work 20
pattern repeats.
RIPPLE PATTERNS FOR SCARVES
Follow lhe stitch pattern on page
119, working each row in a different
yarn, leaving yarn ends of at least 8in
(20cm) at each end of the row.
Continue until the scarf is the desired
width.
Finishing the zigzag scarf
Lightly press the scarf on lhe wrong
side. Group the yarn ends into
bundles and tie an overhand knot at
the lop of each bundle to form a
fringe.
Using yarns from your stash
The scarf was worked from stash
yarns, mixing different weights and
textures of yarn. Thick yarns were
used in single strands; medium-
weight yams were used in double
strands and several fine ones were
combined to make up a similar
weight. Try to change yarn colors and
textures every row to make a really
unusual fabric and don't forget to
leave yarn ends of at least 8in (20cm)
long al each end of the rows.

Ripple patterns for babies
The most popular crafted gift for a new baby is a knitted
or crocheted afghan, often one made in pastel colors.
Ripple stitch patterns work well on a small scale to make
pram and col covers, snuggle blankets, and lacy shawls.
Knit or crochet?
Both techniques work well, although knitting is probably the
better technique of the two to use since knitted fabric has a
better drape than one worked in crochet. Always make a gauge
swatch first; this will let you check the drape of the fabric and
the effect of your chosen colors as well as helping you make
sure that the finished item will be the right size.
Choosing the stitch pattern
Choose a stitch pattern that is fairly closely worked to make
pram and cot covers and small blankets for baby to snuggle
into. Lighter, lacy patterns are good for making shawls, but
avoid those with large holes as these can catch and snag on tiny
fingers. Suggested stitches are shown on page 87.
Yarns for babies
Many yams are marketed as suitable for making baby items.
They may be spun from pure wool, acrylic, cotton, or a blend of
two or more of these fibers. Pure wool baby yarns are specially
treated to be soft, non-scratchy, and machine-washable, but
many crafters prefer lo make baby items from acrylic because
it is inexpensive and easy to care for. Cotton yarns are a good
choice for babies living in warm climates as they are cooler in
use than both wool and acrylic yarns.
Combining colors and yarns
Traditional pastel colors are a good, although rather safe choice
for making baby items. As well as the usual pink and blue
shades plus white and cream, you can choose from pastel
greens, turquoises, mauves, and yellows. Many ranges of baby
yarns include stronger colors such as purple and orange as well
as pretty variegated yarns. The snuggle blanket in the
photograph is made from pure wool yarn in a lovely soft green
shade contrasted with pale cream, but it would look equally
attractive worked in hot, strong colors such as bright pink and

Gauge: 20 sts and 8 rows lo 4in

Size and colors: The afghan in the
photograph was worked in a
selection of yarns based around a
color palette of blue and green.
Gray and purple yarns were also
incorporated to contrast with the
main colors. The afghan measures
50in x 53in (127cm x 135cm) and
is finished off with several rows of
single crochet edging.
Yarn requirements: Double knitting
weight wool or wool/acrylic mix
yarn and a similar quantity of
mohair or brushed yarns in the
same weight. One pattern row
requires approximately 25 yds
(22.9m) of yarn.

Ripple patterns
for afghans
Ripple stitch patterns are perennial favorites for
making afghans as they are fun to knit or crochet
and grow quickly in most weights of yarn. Make
afghans in different sizes for different uses; make a
small afghan for throwing over the back of a chair, a
medium-sized one to snuggle into while reading or
watching television, and a large one to cover a bed.
Knit or crochet?
Crochet is the most popular technique to use when
making an afghan since there is no limit to the size you
can make when working it all in one piece. When
knitting an afghan you'll need to work back and forth
on a long circular needle instead of using a pair of single-
point needles, which will be too short to accommodate
the large number of stitches required. You can, if you
prefer, knit an afghan in several narrow strips and sew
them together.
Choosing the stitch pattern
You can use most of the stitch patterns in the book when
creating an afghan, although some of the lighter, lacy
patterns such as Guppy Tails on page 84 will look best
worked in fine yarns. Suggested stitches are shown on
page 105.
Combining colors and yarns
Almost any weight of yarn is suitable for making an
afghan, although thicker yarns will work up more quickly
than fine ones and will give a much more substantial
result. Pure wool is a popular and warm choice but many
crafters prefer to use an acrylic or wool/acrylic mix yarn
on the grounds of price and washability. Choose new
yarns for your afghan or mix and match all the odd balls
in your yarn stash for a truly personal result. You can
select yarns using a color scheme of two or more
contrasting or coordinating colors, or simply work with
random colors, placing them at will.
