FOREWORD 7 FOREWORD I grew up surrounded by woods and blueberry fields, and spent much of my childhood outdoors, picking flowers, chasing dragonflies, and collecting leaves. Not surprisingly, I developed an early fascination with nature—a fascination I’ve never outgrown. When I learned to crochet, I was excited to discover that groups of stitches often resembled natural forms. A few twists of the hook, and I’d find myself looking at the serrated edge of a leaf, the overlapping petals of a flower or the gentle curve of a butterfly's wing. This collection includes patterns for many of my favorite flowers, leaves, and insects. From tulips and sunflowers to ivy and maple leaves, the designs reflect the color and variety found in nature itself. Whether your aim is to make a few lacy blossoms, or to create a whole crochet garden, you'll find plenty of inspiration. So gather some colored threads, settle into your favorite chair, and enjoy! 8 ABOUT THIS BOOK ABOUT THIS BOOK This book presents an enchanting selection of 100 flower patterns for you to crochet, as well as a selection of stunning and inspirational project ideas. Each of these delicate creations can be used to embellish garments, gifts, accessories, housewares, and much more. SECTION I: THE BASICS (PAGES 10-21) The book begins with basic crochet information about equipment, symbols, abbreviations, and terminology, as well as some notes on how to work the key stitches featured in the book. If you are new to crochet or just need a refresher, you will find all of the know-how you need to get started. SECTION 2: FLORAL COLLECTION (PAGES 22-43) The Floral Collection displays the 100 beautiful designs that feature in this book. Flick through this colorful visual guide, select your design, and then turn to the relevant page of instructions to create your chosen piece. Each design is shown at actual - size and in proportion to the others on the page, which gives an idea of size and scale. Each item is labeled with its name and page number so that you can easily find the pattern in the Instructions chapter (pages 44-113).
ABOUT THIS BOOK 9 SECTION 3: INSTRUCTIONS (PAGES 44-113) In this chapter you’ll find instructions on how to create every design featured in the Floral Collection. The flower designs each feature a chart, finished photograph, and written instructions. This is so that you can use either method or, better still, combine both. All the flowers have been designed for size 10 thread and a size 5 (1.90 mm) hook, and the patterns are organized by degree of difficulty—basic, intermediate, or advanced. SECTION 4: PROJECTS (PAGES 114-125) The beauty of these flower designs is that they can all be used to embellish a number of items, from garments and gifts to home accessories. This chapter presents a selection of ideas to inspire and encourage you to use the featured designs in a variety of ways. A close-up photograph of each project shows in detail how the item has been made and put together.

The basics In this chapter, you will Hud detailed in formation on tools, materials, and patterns, as well as all of the crochet techniques you’ll need to make the Howers, leaves, and insects in this collection.
12 THE BASICS TOOLS AND MATERIALS One of the attractions of crochet flowers is that they do not require a large collection of specialized tools or materials. Select a steel hook, a few brightly colored threads, and a sharp pair of scissors, and you’ll be ready to begin. CROCHET THREAD The flowers in this collection are made from cotton crochet thread, which comes in sizes from 3 to 100, with higher numbers indicating finer threadsThicker threads are easiest to crochet, and for that reason, all of these patterns were designed for size 10 thread. Experiment with finer threads and smaller hooks to create smaller, lighter-weight flowers. You may also wish to try other materials, such as lace-weight yarns or embroidery floss, for beautiful and sometimes surprising results. SCISSORS A small, sharp-pointed pair of scissors is especially helpful for clipping thread ends. CROCHET HOOKS For crocheting in thread, you will need a small, steel crochet hook. The patterns in this book were developed using a size 5 (1.90 mm) hook, but many charts recommend using a size 7 (1.65 mm) or size 8 (1.5 mm) crochet hook with size IO thread.Thread thicknesses vary, as do the gauges of individual crocheters, / so any hook size recommendation should i' be taken as a starting point only. For /я the purposes of these patterns, /я the correct hook to use is the /я one that allows you to work /я most comfortably with your /я Л chosen thread. /я /я
TOOLS AND MATERIALS • SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS 13 SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS On these pages you will find information on the abbreviations, symbols, and terminology used in the Instructions chapter (see pages 44-1 13), and elsewhere in this book INCREASES Symbols joined at the base show stitches worked in a single stitch or space to make an increase. They are usually described as “work so many stitches in the next stitch,” or at the beginning of a row “work so many stitches in the stitch below." 2-st sc increase BASIC SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS Chain Slip stitch ss Single crochet sc Half double hdc crochet Double crochet de Treble tr Double treble dtr Work in the single front strand of the stitch below. Symbols joined at the top show stitches gathered into one stitch to form a decrease. Each stitch of the group (de, tn etc., according to the symbol) is made without working the last wrap (a wrap is: yarn round hook then pull yam through loop). This leaves one loop on the hook for each incomplete stitch plus the original loop. The decrease is completed by taking the yam round the hook and then pulling the yarn through all loops on the hook. 2-st sc decrease 2-st de decrease 4-st tr cluster 2-st dtr cluster 3-st de cluster 2-st tr cluster 3-st tr cluster
14 THE BASICS CROCHET REFRESHER COURSE For readers who are new to crochet (and those who could use a review), this section provides instruction on the stitches used in this book. If you've never crocheted before, start by working the stitches with a large crochet hook in medium-weight yarn. Once you are comfortable with them, switch to thread. HOLDING THE HOOK AND YARN MAKING A SLIP KNOT I Holding the hook as if it were a pen is I the most widely used method. Center the tips of your right thumb and forefinger over the flat section of the hook. 3To control the supply and keep an even gauge on the yam, hold the short end of the yarn in place with your right thumb. Take the yarn coming from the ball loosely around the little finger of your left hand and loop it over the left forefinger Use the middle finger on the same hand to help hold the work. If you are left-handed, hold the hook in the left hand and the yam in the right. I Loop the yam as shown, insert the hook into the loop, catch the yarn with the hook, and pull it through to make a loop over the hook. 2An alternative way to hold the hook is to grasp the flat section of the hook between your right thumb and forefinger as if you were holding a knife. 2Gently pull the yam to tighten the loop around the hook and complete the slip knot.
CROCHET REFRESHER COURSE 15 WORKING A FOUNDATION CHAIN (CH) WORKING A SINGLE CROCHET (SC) The foundation chain is the equivalent of casting on in knitting and it's important to make sure that you have made the required number of chains for the pattern you are going to work. Count each V-shaped loop on the front of the chain as one chain stitch, except for the loop on the hook, which is not counted. You may find it easier to turn the chain over and count the stitches on the back of the chain. When working the first row of stitches (usually called the foundation row) into the chain, insert the hook under one thread or two, depending on your preference. I Holding the hook with the slip knot in your right hand and the yarn in your left, wrap the yarn over the hook. Draw the yarn through to make a new loop and complete the first chain stitch. WORKING A SLIP STITCH (SL ST) 2Repeat this step, drawing a new loop of yarn through the loop already on the hook until the chain is the required length. Move the thumb and second finger that are grasping the chain upward after every few stitches to keep the gauge even. When working into the chain, insert the hook under one thread (for a looser edge) or two (for a firmer edge), depending on your preference. Slip stitch is the shortest of all the crochet stitches and its main uses are for joining rounds, making seams, and carrying the hook and yarn from one place to another Insert the hook from front to back into the required stitch. Wrap the yarn over the hook (yam over) and draw it through both the work and the loop on the hook. One loop remains on the hook and one slip stitch has been worked. I Begin with a foundation chain (see left) and insert the hook from front to back into the second chain from the hook. Wrap the yam over the hook (yam over) and draw it through the first loop, leaving two loops on the hook. 2To complete the stitch, yam over and draw it through both loops on the hook, leaving one loop on the hook. Continue in this way, working one single crochet into each chain. 3At the end of the row, turn and work one chain for the turning chain (remember that this chain does not count as a stitch). Insert the hook into the first single crochet at the beginning of the row. Work a single crochet into each stitch of the previous row, being careful to work the final stitch into the last stitch of the row, but not into the turning chain.
16 THE BASICS WORKING A HALF DOUBLE CROCHET (HDC) I Begin with a foundation chain (see page 15), wrap the yarn over the hook (yarn over), and insert the hook into the third chain from the hook. 2Draw the yarn through the chain, leaving three loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all three loops on the hook, leaving one loop on the hook. One half double crochet complete. 3 Continue along the row, working one half double crochet into each chain. At the end of the row, work two chains to turn. Skip the first stitch and work a half double crochdt into each stitch made on the previous row. At the end of the row, work the last stitch into the top of the turning chain. WORKING A DOUBLE CROCHET (DC) I Begin with a foundation chain (see page 15), wrap the yarn over the hook twice (yarn over twice), and insert the hook into the fifth chain from the hook. 2Draw the yarn through the chain, leaving four loops on the hook.Yarn over again and draw the yarn through the first two loops on the hook, leaving three loops on the hook. 3Yarn over and draw the yarn through the two loops on the hook leaving one loop on the hook. One double crochet complete. Continue along the row, working one double crochet stitch into each chain. At the end of the row, work three chains to turn. Skip the first stitch and work a double crochet into each stitch made on the previous row. At the end of the row, work the last stitch into the top of the turning chain. WORKING A TREBLE I Begin with a foundation chain (see page 15), wrap the yarn over the hook twice (yarn over twice), and insert the hook into the fifth chain from the hook. 2Draw the yam through the chain, leaving four loops on the hook. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through the first two loops on the hook, leaving three loops on the hook. 3Yarn over again and draw through the first two loops on the hook leaving two loops on the hook.
CROCHET REFRESHER COURSE 17 WORKING IN ROUNDS Most flowers are worked in rounds, which means that they are worked outward from a central ring called a foundation ring. 4Yam over again and draw through the two remaining loops, leaving one loop on the hook.Treble crochet is now complete. Making a foundation ring Work a short length of foundation chain (see page 15) as specified in the pattern. Join the chains into a ring by working a slip stitch into the first stitch of the foundation chain. 5 Continue along the row, working one treble crochet stitch into each chain. At the end of the row, work four chains to turn. Skip the first stitch and work a treble crochet into each stitch made on the previous row. At the end of the row, work the last stitch into the top of the turning chain. WORKING A DOUBLE TREBLE CROCHET (DTR) A double treble stitch is similar to a treble. To make this stitch, follow the treble instructions, but at step I, wrap the yarn over the hook three times. Work step 2, and then work step 3 twice, before proceeding to step 4. Working into the ring I Work the number of turning chains specified in the pattern—three chains are shown here (counting as a double crochet stitch). Inserting the hook into the space at the center of the ring each time, work the number of stitches specified in the pattern into the ring. Count the stitches at the end of the round to check you have worked the correct number 2Join the first and last stitches of the round together by working a slip stitch into the top of the turning chain.
18 THE BASICS FINISHING OFF THE FINAL ROUND To make a neat edge, finish off the final round by using this method of sewing the first and last stitches together in preference to the slip stitch joining method shown on page 17. WORKING INTO THE FRONT AND BACK OF STITCHES Unless pattern details instruct you otherwise, it’s usual to work crochet stitches under both loops of the stitches made on the previous row. CHANGING COLORS I To make a neat join between colors, leave the last stitch of the old color incomplete so there are two loops on the hook and wrap the new color around the hook. I Cut the yarn, leaving an end of about I 4 in (10 cm) and draw it through the last stitch. With right side facing, thread the end in a large tapestry needle and take it under both loops of the stitch next to the turning chain. Working into the front When instructions tell you to work into the front of the stitches, insert the hook only under the front loops of stitches on the previous row. 2Pull the needle through and insert it into the center of the last stitch of the round. On the wrong side, pull the needle through to complete the stitch, adjust the length of the stitch to close the round, then weave in the end on the wrong side in the usual way. Working into the back Likewise, to work into the back of the stitches, insert the hook only under the back loops of stitches on the previous row 2Draw the new color through to complete the stitch and continue working in the new colon The illustrations show a color change in a row of double crochet stitches the method is the same for single crochet and other stitches. BLOCKING Some flowers, particularly those with very broad or long petals, will have a tendency to curl or twist when they are first crocheted. You can correct this by soaking the flower in cold water pressing it to the desired shape, and setting it on a towel until it is completely dry.
CROCHET REFRESHER COURSE • STEMS AND LEAVES 19 STEMS AND LEAVES For some projects, you may wish to have stems and leaves for your flowers. There are several methods of making them, including an adaptable stem and leaf pattern, shown here, and other generic leaf patterns, shown on pages 20-21. ADAPTABLE STEM AND LEAF PATTERN Adapt this pattern to suit your your flower Lower stem: Make a chain of the desired length. Right Leaf: ch 2 to form the leaf's stem, ch 8, and si st in 8th ch from hook to form a ring. Bypass stem (pass thread under the stem), and work the following stitches into the ring: [3 sc, hdc, de, ch 3, de, hdc, 3 sc], si st in the same ch as last si st (at the base of the ring), and in the 2 ch of the leaf's stem. Upper Stem: Make a chain long enough to attach to the back of the flower (usually at least 6 ch). Join to the back of the flower with a si st. (Depending on the project, you can also leave the flower off and sew or glue it to the stem later) ch I. Starting in the 3rd ch from the hook, si st back down the stem, until you get to the desired location of the left leaf. Left Leaf: Repeat Right Leaf. Lower Stem: sl st in each of the stem’s remaining ch. Fasten off; weave in ends. Large leaves with devil’s paintbrush, page 51 This pattern can be modified in a variety of ways: • Make single or multiple leaves on each side. • Create bigger or smaller leaves by changing the size of the leaf’s foundation ring, and by increasing or decreasing the number of stitches you work into the ring. (Generally, you’ll want to work about 2 more stitches into the ring than there are chains. For example, if you chain 6 for your foundation ring, you’ll likely work 8 stitches into that ring.) • Change the shape of the leaf by changing the stitches you use: the pattern above uses a progression of single, half double, and double crochets, but you can use only single crochets to make a smaller, rounder leaf, or add taller stitches like trebles to make a larger, flatter leaf. • For a small, flat leaf, dispense with the foundation ring altogether and make the leaves as in the burning bush branch pattern on page 84. (That pattern also illustrates a method of making a sharper-pointed leaf with a picot or small loop at the tip.) * Try grouping small leaves together on a stem, to form a lacy leaf cluster
