1 PRIDE AND PREJUDICE BY JANE AUSTEN
Text 1 It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters. “My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?” Mr. Bennet replied that he had not. “But it is,” returned she, “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.” Mr. Bennet made no answer. “Do you not want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently. “You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.” This was invitation enough. VOCABULARY Word / Phrase Translation / Meaning Example from text universally acknowledged всеми повсеместно признанный “It is a truth universally acknowledged...” possession владение, собственность “...in possession of a good fortune...” fortune состояние, богатство “...a good fortune...” be in want of нуждаться в чем-либо “...must be in want of a wife.” neighbourhood район, округа, соседство “...on his first entering a neighbourhood...” rightful законный, правомерный “...the rightful property... ” 8 Глава 1. PRACTICE Task 1. Fill in the blanks with suitable words from the passage: possession . universally . marry . single . fortune 1. Mr. Darcy is a man who has a huge fortune in his ____. 5. She hopes he will _____________ one of their daughters. Task 2. Match the words with their definitions: Word/Phrase Definition 1. universally (adv) a) to need or lack something 2. acknowledged (adj) b) an area or community within a town or city; the people living near one another 3. possession (n) c) recognized or accepted as being true or valid 4. fortune (n) d) in every case; by everyone 5. be in want of (phr) e) a large amount of money or assets 6. neighbourhood (n) f) the state of owning or having something Task 3. Based on the passage, decide if these statements are True (T), False (F), or Not Stated (NS). 1. Mrs. Bennet is the original source of the news about Netherfield Park. 2. Mr. Bennet is deeply interested in the news from the very beginning. 3. Mrs. Long has personally met the new tenant, Mr. Bingley. 4. The families in the neighbourhood assume a wealthy single man would be a suitable husband for their daughters. 5. Mr. Bennet’s calm demeanor contrasts with his wife’s excitability. 1. Pride and prejudice by Jane Austen
KEYWORDS WITH CONTEXT EXPLANATIONS 1. universally acknowledged (всеми признанный, общепринятый) Знаменитая начальная фраза романа: “It is a truth universally acknowledged” — это истина, всеми признанная. 2. in possession of a good fortune (владеющий крупным состоянием) Молодой человек описывается как “in possession of a good fortune” — обладающий хорошим состоянием. 3. be in want of a wife (нуждаться в жене) Общественное мнение гласит, что такой мужчина “must be in want of a wife” — должен нуждаться в жене. 4. rightful property (законная собственность) Иронично говорится, что такого мужчину считают “the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters” — законной собственностью той или иной из их дочерей. 6. no objection to hearing it (не возражаю выслушать) Ответ мистера Беннета: “I have no objection to hearing it” — я не имею возражений это выслушать.
Text 2 “Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise and four to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.” “What is his name?” “Bingley.” “Is he married or single?” “Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!” “How so? How can it affect them?” “My dear Mr. Bennet,” replied his wife, “how can you be so tiresome! Это ключевая характеристика, которая вызывает интерес соседей.
Text 3 He was not a man to trifle with any feeling that was serious and decided. “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you,” he said earnestly, his voice filled with deep emotion. Elizabeth’s astonishment was beyond expression. She stared at him, blushed, hesitated, and was for a moment silent. This he believed to be encouragement sufficient; and immediately he proceeded with the avowal of all that he felt, and had long felt, towards her. In such cases, it is generally the custom to express a polite sense of obligation for the sentiments declared, however little one may be inclined to approve them. But Mr. Darcy was not a man for social formalities or conventional responses. He was serious and unwavering, not one to trifle with any feeling that was so earnest and decided, revealing the depth of his passion with absolute sincerity. VOCABULARY Word / Phrase Translation / Meaning Example from text ardently страстно, пылко “…how ardently I admire and love you…” astonishment изумление, крайнее удивление “Elizabeth’s astonishment was beyond expression…” colour покраснеть, зардеться “She stared, coloured, doubted…” doubt усомниться, не верить “She stared, coloured, doubted…” be silent молчать, не давать ответа “...doubted, and was silent.” encouragement поощрение, знак одобрения “This he considered sufficient encouragement.” avowal “…the avowal of all that he felt…” 18 признание Глава 1. You will be calm and prudent, and I shall be miserable and passionate; but I shall not be happier than you.” “I will be calm. I will be mistress of myself.” “Always resignation and acceptance. Text 6 “It is not everyone’s business to know what is in a man’s heart; but I think it is a great thing to be able to judge rightly of a person’s character.” “I do not imagine anyone judging so carefully as you do, Marianne.” “Perhaps not. I am always ready to find good where I can, and bad where I must.” “But do you not risk being deceived by too much generosity of spirit?” “I might, but I cannot help hoping the best of people. It is easier to bear disappointment when one has given others the benefit of the doubt, and tries to see their true nature with kindness.” “Hope is a fine thing, but experience should teach caution.” “Yes, but I think a kind heart is always best rewarded. Even if it suffers sometimes, it never fails to leave a positive mark where it has been. Such goodness, though it may not be immediately recognized, is a treasure far surpassing wealth or pride.” VOCABULARY Word / Phrase judge character carefully Translation / Meaning судить, оценивать характер, личность hope внимательно, осторожно щедрость, великодушие обманутый, введенный в заблуждение надежда experience опыт kind добрый, доброжелательный generosity deceived 32 Example from text “… to be able to judge rightly of a person’s character.” “… to judge rightly of a person’s character.” “I do not imagine anyone judging so carefully as you do…” “… do you not risk being deceived by too much generosity of spirit?” “… I cannot help hoping the best of people…” “… experience should teach caution…” “… a kind heart is always best rewarded.” 3 LITTLE WOMEN BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT
Text 7 “I want to do something splendid… something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead. I don’t know exactly what it will be, but I’m always on the watch for it. I mean to astonish you all someday, to leave a mark that lasts far beyond my lifetime. Your father, Jo, is an incredible man. He never loses patience, never doubts or complains, but always hopes, works, and waits so cheerfully that one can only feel inspired and ashamed to act otherwise in his presence. Love Jo all your days, if you choose, but don’t let love spoil you, for it’s wicked to throw away so many good gifts just because you can’t have the one you want. Remember, love is a great beautifier. It makes the plainest face lovely, and the simplest life beautiful in ways you never imagined. Text 8 True happiness consists not in the multitude of possessions, but in the few things we truly cherish — those moments and relationships that give our lives genuine meaning and depth. Possessions can bring comfort and a sense of security, but often they distract us from what really matters most: love, friendship, and kindness, which nourish the soul far beyond material wealth. Indeed, the heart’s treasures are invisible to the eye; they are found in shared moments of joy, acts of compassion, and sincere connections between people. Yet, without some earthly comforts to sustain us, it is difficult to nurture the spirit and care for others effectively. So balance, then, between what we have and what we give, is the secret to living a truly fulfilled life, one where richness is measured not by things, but by the grace of giving and receiving love openly and wholeheartedly. Text 9 Let us be grateful for the simple blessings that enrich our daily lives, for it is in gratitude that the heart finds true peace and lasting contentment. We may strive tirelessly for great achievements and accumulate many things, but without genuine appreciation for the present moment and the people who surround us, true joy remains forever elusive. Gratitude opens the door to humility and kindness, transforming ordinary moments into memories of deep and lasting value. Глава 4 JANE EYRE BY CHARLOTTE BRONTË
Text 10 “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you — and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh — it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal, — as we are! I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will; which I now exert to leave you. I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. Глава 5 GOOD WIVES BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT
Text 13 “We are not rich, but we are happy; and I think happiness is the best kind of wealth. There are many things better than money, and a cheerful heart is one of them. A good wife is not only a helpmate but a true friend, one who supports and understands her husband through all trials and joys. I have learned that a woman’s strength is not measured by her power over others, but by her courage to face life’s trials with grace and patience. Sisters, though differing in temper and opinion, can unite in love and purpose, making a home a sanctuary from the world’s troubles. It is not the grand things, but the little acts of kindness and understanding that build a happy family and lasting bonds.
