Ask Judie
by Judie Solomon, Thistle Needleworks
Q. Some of my friends separate all their floss when
doing cross stitch. Is that really necessary?
Charlotte C.
A. The individual threads within a strand of 6-ply embroidery floss are all twisted on each other. When you separate the ply of your thread and then put them back together again, called "stripping", they will lay next to each other. I’m sure you can sec that you will get better coverage of the fabric and smoother stitches
rather than
. This is true

no matter how many ply you are using - 2 to 12 . . .
There arc several tools on the market that may be used for stripping floss -- ask for a demonstration at your local nedddlework shop.
"Ask Judie",
c/o Cross Country Stitching Magazine, P.O. Box 710, Manchester, CT 06040
The "old-fashioned way” still works, however. Hold one end of the strand of floss between the thumb and fore-finger of one hand with about 1/4 inch showing above the fingers. With the thumb and fore-finger of the other hand pull one ply out and straight up. The floss will tend to gather up under the holding fingers, but fall down again after the one ply is pulled all the way through. Lay that one ply down and repeat until you have the number of ply needed. When these are put together again, you will see the difference (and appreciate it as you continue stitching).
Frequent stroking on the thread whenever you drop your needle to untwist the thread will maintain the smooth, flat effect initially created.
Marlitt, a 6-ply rayon embroidery thread, is also helped by moistening. Pieces of nylon sponge in a small plastic box are available to help with this, or use a piece of sponge sheet (paper towels leave an unwanted residue).
Happy stitchin’!

Stretch around back of candy machine and slip stitch on back. This can be easily slid off for cleaning and then restretchcd.
Basic Stitches
CROSS STITCH: One cross stitch is equal to one square on each chart. The cross stitch is formed by two straight stitches that cross each other at their centers. When working in a horizontal or vertical line, do bottom stitches first(a]| in the same direction); then work top stitches back in opposite direction to complete row. Use two ply floss for all basic stitching, unless otherwise indicated. Use one ply for all outline stitching.
THREE-QUARTER STITCH: The three quarter stitch is formed by a one-half cross stitch and a one-quarter cross stitch.
OUTLINING ONE-QUARTER STITCH:
BACKSTITCH: Backstitching is used for outline or detail. Backstitching should be done after design is completed.
RUNNING STITCH: May be used in lieu of backstitch. When one-quarter stitch is to be outlined, use a one-quarter stitch (2 ply) for basic stitching, and then complete with backstitch (1 ply) for remainder of square.

Karen Martin	Triple Trouble ‘farm
‘Route 11®
603-293-0722	gUford, 9<jK. 03246
Story by Sara Emmons
Up a winding country road to what used to be called "Triple Trouble Fann,” is an impressive business called "The Yam Shop.”
Drawing interest from locals and travelers, The Yam Shop does very well, but the land it sits on wasn’t so lucky. That’s why they called it "triple trouble." It used to be a dairy farm that didn’t last And a sheep farm. That too disappeared. Then another business also failed or moved or otherwise vanished. But the little yam shop came along and blossomed, in fact, boomed! So, one crisp fall weekend, we, along with crowds of leaf peekers, wrapped up in our woollies, and drove north to New Hampshire to visit this shop, which is on our list of favorites! It was worth the effort for the scenery, naturally, but even the drive was easy. Being from Connecticut, we felt very nestled in exquisite New England terrain swelling all aroung us with the foothills of the White Mountains. We were moments away from the sprawling Lake Winncpesaukec that draws thousands of tourists every year.
How pleasantly surprised we were as we drove up to this large, well-arcbitecturcd cow bam, hinting of sophisticated country charm. It seemed almost too large for country vistas and quiet fanning villages. We soom realized that even at a time when farms arc floundering, specialty shops like this, with eye appeal and customer appeal do very well. When stitchers in business do well, we arc very happy indeed!
Inside we were fascinated with post and beam construction, high ceilings, white walls, bam boards --all offset with homey warm colors, like the fabrics and soft yarns peeping out of bins. Two stories (we guess about 3,000 square feet total) are highlighted by a unique stairway leading to the Christmas loft, brimming with treasures. There’s ample room for big furniture - many hutches and country tables, chests, and chairs, - but everything is well organized, versatile for many tastes, and fun to browse. Check out the beats, dolls and Afghans!
For many women customers, spending 4 hours in The Yarn Shop is no big deal. When husbands come in with their wives, says owner Karen Martin, it won’t be long before husbands are found napping in the big comfy rocking chairs in the Christmas loft. After all, for many men, shopping is a big ordeal.
Half and half is one way to describe the inventory, that is, 50 percent knitting; 50 percent cross stitch. There are many kits, about 75 models, a large selection of frames, a large book collection, and a complete line of fabrics. The extensive floss selection is DMC, Anchor, DMC flower thread, Danish Hower thread, Medicis, watercolours and four lines of overdyed. Country accessories and a complete button line also await you. The list goes on, impressive for any shop in the Northeast.
Reproduction samplers are quite popular. Folks go for the antique look.
For healthy cross-fertilization, knitting and stitching classes are held together. Classes are evenings beginner through advanced. Monday night class is an informal sit and stitch gathering for a $5 fee. It gets lively and includes desert.
The shop hosts an all day stitch-in field trip at the end of the school year for moms and teachers and anyone who wants to attend. They compare projects and everyone brings a yummy or two. Sometimes it lasts into the evening.
The store has been in its present location since October 1989. Karen has 25 yars stitching experience. She is an expert knitter and stitcher and her love for both is obvious anywhere you look in the shop. She pays careful attention to detail and is very friendly to her customers.
Store hours: 10-5 Mon-Sat Closed Sun.
