Country Doll Patterns
Our Little Alphabet Girls series continues with the girls enjoying their favorite stitching while serving up cookies and marmalade. These girls are stitched on a long, lacy bellpull, but try them on a quilt, mobile or any way you’d like! The rest of the alphabet girls will make their appearance in each of our following issues until Y and Z round out the series in October.

Q. I bought a small antique sampler at an auction recently. It is in poor condition, so I’d like to make a reproduction of it. How do I chart areas that are “over one”?

A. Lucky you! Antique samplers, even small ones, are hard to find, especially at a reasonable
Either of two methods could be employed . . .
The first involves charting the entire piece on graph paper with each line on the graph paper representing one thread on the fabric. Since you will be charting the actual stitches without regard to color, a separate list of colors must be kept.

Do your stitching in the same order. First stitch the areas over two, then the areas over one, referring to the original sampler for placement.
The other involves charting first the “over two” areas in the normal way — each “over two” stitch is color-coded in a block of the graph paper. Leave blank the areas where the “over one” stitches
