FEATURE PLUNGE POOLS TRENDS MAKING WAVES IN 2024 Pool design trends WRITTEN WITH JOHN STORCH, DIRECTOR OF A TOTAL CONCEPT LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS JOHN STORCH Lead Designer and Founder John Storch is the principal of A Total Concept, an award-winning landscape, architecture and swimming pool design practice. The team is well experienced in designing and building new pools as well as doing renovations. They look after the redesign and renovation of the pool and all surrounding areas including drainage, level changes, materials and equipment selections, the approvals process, pool builder and landscaper recommendations and supervision of project implementation. 30
P ools have changed greatly in the past five years and will continue to do so this year. Industry expert John Storch, director and senior designer of A Total Concept Landscape Architects, discusses the most significant trends and predictions that will ensure your money is spent well. QUALITY DESIGN “We are seeing more and more homeowners choosing to engage a specialist design company like A Total Concept for a high-quality design concept,” says John Storch. “Typically we are engaged to look at a pool and garden holistically, providing a design that considers the entire property rather than looking at a pool in isolation. We offer unbiased advice on what materials, builders and equipment are suitable for a project.” SIMPLICITY IN DESIGN Connection of indoor and outdoor spaces for easy flow, with open-plan living, has inspired lesscomplicated pool shapes and gardens utilising clean lines. “We’ve been doing a lot with chunky square edges to create floating effects to paving around swimming pools, and using large paving materials both inside and outside the pool instead of traditional pool tiles and paving products.” COST-EFFECTIVE ALFRESCOS Cost-effective entertaining areas around pools are trending with paving alternatives such as hardwood sleepers, stepping stones and lawn. WADING AREAS Wading areas or tanning benches with only 200mm water cover are a popular addition this year. “These allow a person to lie on a lounger in the pool and to drape a hand over the side to cool off, or fully immerse.” PLUNGE POOLS With higher-density living, private exterior spaces are becoming smaller. This, together with an increasing trend to use garden spaces as a fusion for indoor and outdoor entertainment, is leading to a rise in popularity of plunge pools. These pools are typically used for sunning and socialising. In the pool, long seats and benches are used for relaxing or jumping into the water to cool off. “The size of the pool is not as important these days,” notes John. “Young children tend to be limited to the pool steps and pool benches or on mum or dad’s lap, and adults and teenage children tend to use the pool for sunning, socialising and cooling off.” OUTDOOR UNDERCOVER SPACES “Cabanas have remained very popular and they are one of the interesting and more versatile aspects of our business,” reveals John. “They can be very simple — a space to towel off out of the sun after a swim, or even a mini home with full kitchen and bathroom facilities. Cabanas can fulfill various roles as a family grows. They can be used as a simple shade structure; a poolside cabana; a gym, artist’s studio or parents’ retreat; guest cottage; home office or even eldest daughter’s bedroom!” POOL AUTOMATION The trend towards automated pool systems linking the pool and home has evolved as smartphone technology and connectivity have become more advanced and affordable. This means easier filtering and cleaning and enables remote control use of heating, illumination and garden lights. GOING GREEN Trending upfront design decisions are making swimming pools more environmentally sound. A north-aspect pool can trap heat, a dark interior colour and paving will hold heat, light colours will cool things down. A pool surrounded with a windbreak like a plant hedge will retard heat loss and water evaporation, while a pool cover may restrict water loss and retain heat from the heating system. Whatever your needs, there is one trend that’s certain to persist: homeowners will continue to develop their external spaces, integrating them to create an enviable lifestyle and resort-like environment at home. 31
FEATURE EXPERT ADVICE TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR POOL FOR WINTER While you might not be using your pool as much, or at all, during the cooler months, keeping up regular maintenance is important for a number of reasons WRITTEN WITH CRYSTAL POOLS Image: Crystal Pools W hen winter comes around, it’s the prepping of your pool, along with regular maintenance, that is key to ensuring its quality and longevity. WHEN SHOULD YOU WINTERISE YOUR POOL? Depending on your location and how often you use your pool, prepping it for winter will begin at different times for everyone. Some pools get sun all day long, others are shaded. More and more people are using heating technology we recommend to extend their swimming seasons. As we edge into the colder months, you’ll perhaps notice your family using the pool less often than before and may decide you are ready to “close down” your inground swimming pool for the winter. ENJOYING A HOT SPA IN WINTER There’s nothing like that classic onsen, après ski experience of a hot spa in winter. Some Nordic countries swear by it. Many Crystal Pools owners report they still enjoy their pool and backyard on sunny winter days, using just the heated spa for taking a dip. Heating the entire pool all year is worthwhile for some homeowners too. Keep in mind some pool owners choose to maintain their pool without winterising it, mainly to keep it looking immaculate without necessarily using it for swimming. 32 STEPS TO PREPARING YOUR POOL FOR WINTER 1. Pack away outdoor furniture Depending on your swimming pool placement and your outdoor dining area, packing away outdoor furniture if you can is a great way to prolong it. Although outdoor furniture can help make your home feel like an oasis even when you’re not using it, prolonging its life by reducing exposure to UV light and weathering makes sense. Storing it undercover for winter ensures longevity and might prompt you to give it a good clean at either end of the pack-away process. 2. Trim surrounding plants and landscaping Ensure your surrounding plants and landscaping have either been trimmed or heavily cut back — but not so much as to inhibit their growth. It’s a great way to reduce the quantity of annoying leaves and debris falling into the pool, or on top of your pool cover if you’re using one. 3. Clean the filter Regardless of the size of your pool and its current filtration system, giving your inground swimming pool filter a clean to prep it for the winter is a great way to ensure clean operation and avoid staining from the tannins in gum leaves. For some models, a thorough backwash will suffice. 4. Use a pool cover Using a pool cover during the cooler months of the year is practically essential for conserving heat, but perhaps more importantly it also keeps the pool water a lot cleaner by preventing unwanted debris and dust making its way in. Investing in a quality pool cover is worthwhile for its longevity. While cheaper options do work, it is uneconomical as cheap models typically won’t last more than a year or two. Consequently you’ll find yourself buying a replacement cover relatively soon. 5. Clean the pool fence While cleaning your pool fence might be considered part of regular pool maintenance, adding this to your pool shutdown routine is logical. If you have a glass fence, spray down the fence with water, then use a soft towel with some mild detergent. Take care to avoid run-off into the pool or onto your coping or decking. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR INGROUND SWIMMING POOL DURING WINTER Investing some time to keep your pool adequately maintained will prevent you from potentially paying for costly repairs in the future. 1. Set your solar to winter mode Depending on your swimming pool placement and your outdoor dining area, packing away outdoor furniture if you can is a great way to prolong it. Although outdoor furniture can
EXPERT ADVICE FEATURE 2. 3. 4. 5. help make your home feel like an oasis even when you’re not using it, prolonging its life by reducing exposure to UV light and weathering makes sense. Storing it undercover for winter ensures longevity and might prompt you to give it a good clean at either end of the packaway process. Shock the pool Shocking your pool is a great way to remove any unwanted bacteria or potential algae going into winter. Shocking your pool is the process of using a heavy chlorine treatment. This is distributed throughout the pool and should be rechecked two to three days after to make sure no further adjustments to pH are needed. Clean thoroughly and remove any algae Before you put that final pool cover on and shut down your inground swimming pool for winter, give it a thorough physical clean. This step will be easier to perform if you have automated cleaning equipment installed. There are a few manual tools you can use to help with this process, such as a cleaning brush (typically nylon) and pool skimmer. Wire brushes can be used for stubborn algae spots — just be careful not to scrub your pool’s surface coating or tiles too hard. Getting your pool clean before covering it up will increase the likelihood the water will stay crystal clear through winter with minimal fuss. Keep a cleaning maintenance schedule In addition to our tips and tricks for preparing your inground swimming pool for winter, setting up a cleaning maintenance schedule is a good way to take the worry out of winter pool maintenance. While your winter cleaning schedule can be 70 per cent less frequent than that for the warmer months, having a reminder set to check the state of your pool interior can prevent an algae overgrowth happening due to insufficient winter sanitisation, or anything else you might have missed. If your pool is not in view from the interior of your home, this is an especially helpful practice to adopt. Consider infloor cleaning If you are serious about keeping your inground pool clean year-round with minimal effort, consider infloor cleaning during the initial stages of your concrete pool construction. Infloor cleaning is deemed a luxury expense by some, but essential by others. While it’s an investment in saving time, it’s also a great way to ensure your inground swimming pool stays clean throughout the year, all while minimising the effort it takes to clean it. Robotic cleaners are another way to reduce your maintenance time throughout the year and keep the pool in top condition. That way, preparing your pool for winter will require less effort. Establishing a cleaning routine is the best way to stay on top of pool maintenance. Crystal Pools has been building pools in Australia for more than 60 years and has won over 240 major state, national and international pool awards. crystalpools.com.au 33
FEATURE EXPERT ADVICE Image: PJ Pools and Spas BENEFITS OF A POOL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM A regular maintenance program provides many benefits, including protecting the life of your pool and equipment WRITTEN WITH THE MASTER POOL BUILDERS (MPB) P ools do require a bit of effort to look after, and while many people choose to add these jobs to their weekly schedule, some opt to hire experts to visit their home regularly and look after the pool. There are specific pool maintenance companies or pool shops around the country as well as landscapers who specialise in pools who can do this work. Pool maintenance programs can be customised depending on what you would like done by the professionals and what you’d like to do yourself. They can include servicing, cleaning, water analysis, chemical balancing, equipment repairs, as well as problem solving should any issues arise with the pool. Regular checkups or visits by the pool shop and service are usually done on a monthly basis but can be as frequent as fortnightly and weekly during the peak swimming season. Make sure the pool service technician who performs your regular maintenance is SPASA trained and qualified to service and repair your pool or spa investment. Correct water balance and salt levels are 34 required to maintain healthy water, sanitiser performance and equipment protection. Many new, rendered pool interior finishes require strict chemical level control to ensure the maximum life expectancy and good looks are retained. Regular visits by a SPASA-trained pool technician will achieve this task and will provide the correct mineral and salt additions to save wastage and assist with the storage of bulk and hazardous chemicals. Pool systems are becoming more sophisticated, with automatic control units, heating systems and filtration and dosing systems installed. Regular check-ups ensure the chance of breakdown is dramatically reduced. However, if something does fail, attention is usually very quick as your pool professional is intimately acquainted with your system’s operation and is dedicated to returning the pool to full operation. Your pool is an investment and should be kept in top condition, so it is always ready when the hot weather hits or guests pop in. BENEFITS OF A POOL MAINTENANCE • You can ensure the best possible performance for your pool water quality and equipment function. • Filtration equipment performance and new finish protection can be enhanced with regular check-ups to correct faults before expensive replacement is required. • Your pool is looked after so the water is healthy and ready to swim in at any time. FEATURE EXPERT ADVICE M arketing terms like “low maintenance”, “automate your pool” and “more time swimming, less time cleaning” have long been used in the industry to sell the dream that owning a pool — one of life’s biggest investments — can be easy. There’s no doubt that automation and advances in pool technology have transformed the way we maintain our pools. What used to require a trip to the plantroom can now often be achieved with a flick of a switch or download of an app. These innovations enable homeowners to enjoy a resort-like swimming experience in the comfort of their own backyard without the level of maintenance and attention required just a few years ago. Waterco, which started as a pool equipment manufacturer, is at the forefront of this movement. The technologically savvy company has evolved from creating durable plastic and fibreglass products to developing a suite of equipment, chemicals, minerals and electronic components that make pool maintenance easier — and owning a pool more desirable. “Ray Morgan research estimates 2.7 million Australians live in a house with a pool — equivalent to 13 per cent of the population — and our goal is to provide them with a suite of products and systems that simplify maintenance while creating a sought-after, sustainable lifestyle,” explains Waterco chief operating officer Bryan Goh. “From variable speed pumps and sanitisation equipment to mineral chlorinators and heat pumps, Waterco’s innovations, many of which have Climate Care Certification, create optimum swimming conditions with minimal water and energy consumption.” MULTICYCLONE DUAL FILTRATION SYSTEM Waterco’s dual filtration system, which features its MultiCyclone Centrifugal and Opal Cartridge filters, is engineered to reduce water consumption and maintenance. The innovative technology uses advanced centrifugal water filtration, meaning there are no moving parts and no filter media to clean or replace. Furthermore, the installation of a MultiCyclone as a pre-filter to a cartridge filter can reduce cartridge maintenance to approximately once per swimming season, resulting in significant savings of water. ELECTROCHLOR PLUS MINERAL CHLORINATOR The Electrochlor Plus Mineral Chlorinator makes your pool smarter by automatically taking care of sanitisation, pH management, filtration, and auxilliary equipment so you don’t have to. This one device monitors and displays 36 DESIGNING A DESIRABLE SWIMMING POOL How the right equipment, chemical, minerals and electronic components can make a pool maintenance WRITTEN WITH WATERCO everything you need to know about your pool in real time. It also automatically controls the pool’s pH balance through feedback from inline sensors. Maintaining correct pH levels (7.4-7.6 pH) is essential for many reasons: it ensures you get the most out of your sanitising chemicals, protects pool surfaces and equipment from corrosion or scaling, and creates a more pleasant swimming experience. HYDROSTORM ECO-V 100 VARIABLE SPEED PUMP Equipped with the latest three-speed permanent magnet brushless DC motor, the five-star energyrated Hydrostorm ECO-V 100 Variable Speed Pump can be operated on its low (ECO) speed setting for a majority of its running time, leading to 80 per cent energy savings. This allows pool owners to take advantage of off-peak electrical tariff periods, without disrupting neighbours. OXISWIM HYBRID SANITISATION SYSTEM Waterco’s Oxiswim is a revolutionary breakthrough in water treatment technology that combines the use of electrolysis with hydrogen peroxide to create freshwater conditions that feel luxurious to swim in. It not only simplifies how a swimming pool is managed, but is also the first of its kind ever offered in the swimming pool sector that prevents biofilm from flourishing. While not generally recognised as a key factor when maintaining a pool, it does contribute to increased sanitiser demands and poor water quality. ENERGY-EFFICIENT POOL HEATING Using energy-efficient pool heating solutions such as solar and heat pumps can provide a range of benefits, from cost savings and environmental friendliness to improved comfort and increased home value. Advancements in technology are capable of heating pool water far more economically than they did just a few years ago, enabling users to enjoy their pool for more days throughout the year — making better use of their investment and the lifestyle benefits it brings. POOL-OWNER-FRIENDLY INFLOOR CLEANING SYSTEM Finally, don’t waste hours cleaning your new pool when Waterco’s Blue Square Q360 in-floor pool cleaner can do it for you. Virtually invisible, the Q360 system is fully automatic and can handle high debris levels so there is no need for an additional cleaner with hoses and cords to become tangled in. “Whether installing a new pool or refurbishing an outdated one, a little bit of research in the beginning can go a long way in mitigating the ongoing maintenance and energy requirements of a swimming pool,” says Goh. “For example, installing an in-floor cleaner means you never have to vacuum the pool. There are so many options that make it possible to create a desirable pool.”

A TOTAL CONCEPT TAKING THE PLUNGE Limited space in a small courtyard inspires the creative design of a family’s highly useable plunge pool and outdoor area in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs W ith higher-density living, private exterior spaces are becoming smaller. This, together with an increasing trend to use garden areas as a fusion for indoor and outdoor entertainment, has led to a rise in the popularity of plunge pools. Case in point, the owners of this property who had only one small outdoor spot that was immediately adjacent to the front door of their beautiful period-style terrace in Coogee, in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. However, their three teenage daughters really wanted a pool. Homeowners are increasingly looking for professional assistance to look after their entire projects, and A Total Concept Landscape Architects provides this total service. “We were engaged by the owners of this property to design, obtain building approval, provide construction documentation, recommend and organise the pool builder and landscape contractor,” says John Storch, director of A Total Concept. “We then undertook the management of the project’s construction for our clients. “We discussed with them that the size of the pool is not always important for the average family. When children are young, say up to age six, they tend to be limited to the pool steps and pool benches or on mum or dad’s lap. Adults and families with teenage children tend to lie around a pool in summer, socialising and warming up, then jumping in and cooling off, or sitting and socialising on pool seats and benches. So the size of the pool is irrelevant.” It was important to design this 1.8m x 2.2m pool sympathetically for the small courtyard. The design of the surrounding gardens and spaces was as important to ensure the pool visually fitted the space. “It is always harder to design smaller spaces than large ones because bad design is more obvious,” says John. In winter, the plunge pool is treated as a giant spa and heated so that the couple’s daughters can comfortably sit in the pool and entertain. This greatly increases the overall usability of the pool throughout the year. The water of the simple geometric style of the pool beautifully reflects house lights at night and mirrors the vegetation of the surrounding gardens during the day. “Being immediately adjacent to the pedestrian entry to the house, the pool was treated as a water feature,” says John. The teal 56 colour of the interior comes from glass mosaic tiles, the hue a unique combination of blues and greens, including a gold fleck that mirrors the colours and moods of the sky depending on the prevalent weather conditions. The surrounds include a period-style marble product with striking detail. LED lights change colour to create dramatic effects at night for guests. The surrounding space includes a small sunning deck made of manufactured timber. Planters and pots are filled with tropical-style flora including Mandavillea, Draceana, Snake Plant, Aloe Vera, Purple Flag and Purple Peacock. Together, a visual link has been formed between the period-style residence, plunge pool and pedestrian entry court to create a total concept.

KIAMA POOLS ENTERTAIN, RELAX AND ENJOY With an abundance of beautiful spaces to enjoy in their backyard, this Melbourne family is spoilt for choice when it comes to relaxed outdoor living 60
KIAMA POOLS 61
KIAMA POOLS 62
KIAMA POOLS L ocated in Brighton, this above-ground, rectangular-shaped lap-style pool is not just a place to swim a few laps for exercise — there’s so much more. The project also includes a stunning elevated glass-tiled circular spa with a step down to the 10.5m-long lap pool, creating a beautiful outdoor space with multiple entertaining zones including a sunken firepit area, outdoor kitchen and cantilevered sundeck. “The more time you spend here, the more you are immersed in the beauty and quality of this outdoor space,” say Tim Sprague and Stephen Lloyd, co-owners of Kiama Pools, who built the Mark Browning-designed project for the family. “They requested an outdoor area that looks amazing and is somewhere for friends and family to enjoy. To maximise this space, we elevated the pool and outdoor kitchen entertaining spot to bring the inside and outside together on the same level and provide stunning views to the pool from all living areas of the home.” The Kiama team built the entire outside area which includes a sunken firepit, outdoor kitchen, entertaining and sun decks, bluestone paving and garden beds. The random bluestone path ties the space together — the perfect place for entertaining, lounging poolside or relaxing by the fire. “Our skilled team have ensured quality in every detail to transform an outdoor space that not only looks amazing, but is also built to last,” say Tim and Stephen. “This truly is a fantastic project — a beautiful pool and spa that’s easy to maintain, and a perfect outdoor space to soak in the spa, swim a few laps, dine, lounge, entertain, relax and enjoy.” Co-owners of Kiama Pools, Tim and Stephen both have extensive landscaping experience and noticed a gap in the market: clients wanted to deal with one company to design and create the entire outdoor space — a complete pool and lifestyle solution. Kiama Pools was created with this in mind and has since grown into a successful business managing the design and construction of outdoor spaces, from landscaping and pool building to outdoor rooms and pavilions. Kiama Pools is now comprised of a group of fully qualified team members who are experts in their field and each plays their part in offering clients a one-stop solution. With Kiama, you deal with one company that manages your entire pool and landscape project, or alternatively will collaborate with your home builder, designer or other landscaping professionals to bring your outdoor vision to life. The company draws on more than 30 years of experience in creating luxury outdoor living areas across Melbourne and the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsulas. The directors who run and work in the business are well known in the industry and have a passion for delivering quality without compromise. “As Australia’s longest-operating pool company, we have always restricted the number of residential pools we take on each year to just a few hundred, pursuing a policy of quality over quantity,” says marketing manager Andrew Rothery. “Our approach produces award-winning pools that are built to stand the test of time.” This in-ground concrete swimming pool builder is somewhat of a rarity in the industry as it has continuously produced both residential and commercial pools since its inception in 1957. ARTESIAN POOLS VACATION VIBES Clean, straight lines combine with sleek curves for a standout pool and lifestyle space in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs B rought to life by Artesian Pools, this project was not just about building a swimming pool, but also about creating a lifestyle space that has become a standout feature of the home. Beautifully bright, the contemporary pool is built to effortlessly fit with the modern architectural design of the dwelling, situated on a sunlit, elevated block in Dover Heights in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. The in-ground rectangular concrete pool and poolside space blend effortlessly into the backyard and alfresco area, allowing for maximum integration of the pool and entertaining elements of the home. The clean architectural lines of the 8m-long pool, cool colour scheme of the interior tiles and surrounding coping, teamed with the clever in-built design of the poolside furniture such as the curved daybed, allow for optimal maximisation of pure summer vacation vibes. The choice of a cool colour tone captures the brightness of the sun, matches the build of the home, and is complemented by the landscaping. The clever selection of grey grout accentuates the pool tiles while also 66 emphasising the sleek architectural lines of both the pool and internal spa. By closely colour matching the coping stone with the pavers that continue into the alfresco, the pool and surrounds become one and creatively blend inside and outside living. Through the use of seamless glass, the pool fence almost “disappears” and removes any visual obstruction of the backyard view to the pool. The fencing blends with the daybed through careful matching of materials and cleverly integrates vertical and horizontal lines that accentuate the architectural elegance of the pool and surrounds. “This was as close to a flawless project as you could get,” explains Zeb Rodrigues, director of Artesian Pools. “With this project, we applied our motto ‘the ability and experience behind the art’. For us, a good design focuses on building a pool that is not only functional, but one that is also a standout feature of the property, creating a build that complements the home and makes best use of available space while meeting the perfect point between balance and contrast.”

LAURIE JACOBSON POOLS IN HARMONY Surrounded by fruit trees and mountain vistas, this new pool blends seamlessly with the owners’ 20-acre farm, becoming an integral part of their relaxed way of life S et on a 20-acre rural property, this classic 8m-long pool was designed to look like it had always been there. The intention was for it to fit seamlessly with the property and existing home in the Yarra Ranges, 45km from Melbourne. “It’s a unique property in a beautiful setting and we have created a pool that is harmonious with both the land and home,” explains Laurie Jacobson, director of Laurie Jacobson Pools. “The objective was to make it seamless with the property so it didn’t stand out.” The owners, a retired couple, moved from Melbourne to this property during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are hobby farmers and enjoy looking after the property, cooking with fruit from their land, tending to their two cows, and enhancing the property with custom-designed features such as the unique copper and timber pool fence that the owner constructed himself. 70
LAURIE JACOBSON POOLS 71
LAURIE JACOBSON POOLS They wanted a relaxing space to call home, but also somewhere they can enjoy and house their visitors. “The property is really special, with lots of fruit trees and roaming chickens. It’s a very wholesome setting; the owners are welcoming and love hosting many international friends who visit and stay,” says Laurie. The couple’s brief was for a pool that can be used all year round, with minimal pool fencing to take in the views, a space to use for their own leisure and to enjoy with friends, and for the pool and surrounds to be low maintenance. “They intentionally kept the pool design quite simple to blend in well with the traditional farmhousestyle home,” adds Laurie. One corner of the pool is out of the ground to work naturally with the slope of the block. “We intentionally designed this to be 1.2m in height to avoid fencing on that side so the owners could enjoy unobstructed views of the hills from the pool,” explains Laurie. It’s a more open look that allows the owners to take in the mountain vista. It’s simple and works well with the natural setting and views of the hills. 72
LAURIE JACOBSON POOLS COMPANY PROFILE The pool tiles are particularly interesting in this project — a grey stone that gives the pool a rustic look. The tile colour flows nicely with the bluestone pavers and is less contrasting than a typical blue tile. This tile choice suits a traditional-style home and pool, such as this one, but would also work well for a coastal property. Laurie Jacobson Pools also worked with the clients on the paving design. A Remco in-floor pool cover was installed that hides at the bottom of the pool and automatically comes out to keep the pool free of debris as well as keep the water warm for year-round swimming. The homeowners now have their own perfect piece of rural paradise to enjoy, not far from Melbourne, yet it seems like a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the stresses of daily life. Laurie Jacobson, director of Laurie Jacobson Pools, has more than 40 years of experience in the pool industry. With a string of accolades, his name is widely known throughout the industry and he works with an array of talented landscapers, architects and builders. SA POOL BUILDING VACATION VIBES A beautiful wet-edge pool design that takes advantage of its natural surroundings in the Adelaide Hills B ased in South Australia’s beautiful Adelaide Hills, this family with school-aged children runs their own business, so were after a pool that is low maintenance and large enough for their kids to enjoy with friends. As their very sloping block had a practically unusable backyard, the family also planned to make the space more functional and level. “The hill and natural vegetation of the area gave us inspiration for the design of this project,” explains Dylan Mason, founder and owner of SA Pool Building. “We wanted to make the most of the views and also utilise the backyard better.” Dylan considered the whole backyard rather than focusing only on the pool. Having built many pools on sloping blocks in the past, Dylan drew on his expertise and came up with the idea 74 of using the soil excavated from the swimming pool to level off the rest of the backyard. “When I sat with the client to work out the design of the project, I informed him that we could use the soil excavated from the pool to level off the rest of the backyard and make it a more useable space,” Dylan says. Recognising the potential for storage, Dylan also advised the owner to utilise the under-deck space. “I realised that due to the slope, there would be an area adjacent to the pool under the deck that we could use to store the pool equipment,” he says. The result is a 9m-long rectangular resortstyle pool with a 900mm-wide wet edge catchment tank, with fibreglass sheeting on the top, that allows the water to fall gently onto beautiful white rocks. “When quoting on the project, I quoted for both an infinity edge and without,” says Dylan. “The owner chose to go with the infinity-edge option as it created a full-length ledge on the house side that swimmers could perch against, have a drink and take in the views. It feels like a resort. It’s the full length of the pool so it has space for many people, and also creates an elegant design.” Dylan has worked in the pool industry for 20 years. He worked as a construction manager for another pool company for eight years, where he built concrete pools all over Australia. This was the first pool that he completed as part of his own business after deciding to go out on his own. “We feel the pool has transformed the entire backyard, making it more level and more useable for other activities,” shares Dylan.

SA POOL BUILDING COMPANY PROFILE Based in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, SA Pool Building builds pools all over the state. Dylan Mason, founder and owner of SA Pool Building, works closely with his wife Bernice Mason as a husband-and-wife team. “Our company works on around 40 to 50 pools per year and we are experts in the pool industry,” says Dylan. He has been working in the industry for 20 years, including eight years as a construction manager in Adelaide. His passion for pool building started at 16 years of age when he had the opportunity to commence working in the industry. Dylan draws on his expertise to work with the clients’ ideas, helps them create the brief, then guides them in terms of the aesthetics and functionality of each pool. He considers all aspects of the project when he meets his clients, taking into account the steps, seating, pool orientation, the best location to maximise space, sun exposure and views. “I also do all the drafting myself,” he notes. SA Pool Building specialises in new concrete pools. “We do everything — pools, spas, infinity edges, inground concrete pools, and we build many partial or fully above-ground pools,” says Dylan. “We are experts in building pools on sloping blocks and difficult terrain; we use footings, piers and formwork and adapt pool designs to work with sloping blocks.” SA Pool Building M: 0422 040 295 E: dylan@sapoolbuilding.com 76

ADELAIDE FIBREGLASS POOLS COOL BLUES Beating the heat of the baking South Australian summer has never felt so good 80
ADELAIDE FIBREGLASS POOLS 81
ADELAIDE FIBREGLASS POOLS A nyone who has either lived or visited South Australia in summer knows just how scorching it can be, and how essential a swimming pool is in those months of unrelenting extreme heat. When it came time to consider how best to cool off and have some fun in their backyard, these homeowners in Mount Barker, just outside Adelaide, opted for the simplicity of the Corbree fibreglass design in Bermuda Blue. Designed and built by Summertime Pools, the pool is open, spacious and luxurious, and provides the family with an abundance of space for either exercise or leisure. The side step and seating configuration ensure the main pool body is left open for groups to splash about together or, for those focused on exercise, laps to be swum. With versatility in mind, the Corbree range is offered in four sizes (6m, 7m, 8m and 10m), ensuring there is a Corbree pool to suit backyards of any size. This family opted for the 6m-long design. “We added high-pressure swim jets for the client to swim and exercise,” explains Michael Robinson, owner of Adelaide Fibreglass Pools. The homeowners also added their own touches with Hewnstone coping surrounding the pool. There is a child-safe ledge around the entire perimeter, and the wading area, convenient corner steps and gradual depth increase also make this design a child-friendly option. Importantly, the high-quality, long-lasting fibreglass shell is easy to clean and maintain for endless summers of fun. 82

ROGERS POOLS STEEP SLOPE SOLUTION It was a case of the trickier the better when designing and building a pool to suit this sloping Brisbane site A fter being presented with a steep front yard that slopes approximately 6m from the front door down to the front gate, there was a clear solution for the Rogers Pools’ team when designing this pool — a custom-designed, out-of-the-ground concrete pool. Sitting approximately 2.5m above ground, the resulting terraced rectangular pool with step-out truly suits the slope and maximises the site. Situated in Hamilton, Brisbane, the 5m-long pool and spillway edge is fully tiled in stunning glass Bisazza mosaics. It’s also fully automated and app controlled, including the on-demand spillway edge. In addition to the pool, Rogers Pools designed and built the retaining walls around the pool, the concrete concourse and the blackbutt timber deck, steps and seat. A hidden filtration system is also nestled under the decking — the perfect example of out of sight and out of mind for these Queensland homeowners. This project won Best Courtyard Pool/Small Pool over $80,000 at the SPASA National Awards 88 2023. Peter Rogers started Rogers Pools in 1993 and his daughter Ricki-Lee and son Dean both joined their father in the family business. “We mainly concentrate on the construction of new concrete pools in the Brisbane area and surrounds (Toowoomba/ Sunshine Coast/Gold Coast),” says Peter. “We specialise in steep sloping blocks, difficult sites and difficult or tight access,” adds Dean Rogers. “We would, on average, hand dig six or seven pools per year and have built pools in excess of 5m out of ground on the more sloping sites. The trickier the better! We will do hand digs, crane in machinery or go through houses with machinery — whatever is required.” Ricki-Lee meets with potential new clients for a site meeting to discuss design options and what they want to achieve, and then produces a quote. The pool construction is managed by Dean Rogers, who is very handson in managing the site. Rogers Pools is a member of Master Builders Qld and SPASA.

BLUE GLASS PEBBLE CO IRRESISTIBLE, IRIDESCENT WATER A pool interior that truly catches your eye N othing says luxury like crystal-clear pool water sparkling in the sunlight. However, achieving this look isn’t just about keeping the water clean with chemicals and cleaning systems. It starts with the pool interior you choose. Blue Glass Pebble Company offers a selection of award-winning pool interiors that have a luxurious texture and create a mesmerising sparkle. A combination of glass pebbles and New Zealand pebbles is fully premixed to ensure batch consistency and to maintain the company’s infamous high quality control standards. “Builders and pool owners have been really happy with our product over the years — we’re very proud of the way it looks, feels and lasts over time,” says manager Michael Kettewell. The company’s pool interiors were originally created by former pool builders who wanted to 98 fill a niche in the market. “We built our product out of necessity because we found the finishes we were using in pools were fading in colour,” continues Michael. “Some of them had poor oxides, others crushed painted additives, and some just too difficult for the homeowners to maintain.” Blue Glass Pebble interiors are made specifically for smoothness, high shine, vibrant colour and durability. Available in 12 beautiful and vibrant base colours, which can be mixed and matched to give you thousands of design options, this colourfast product is unrivalled in the pool industry and guaranteed by an industry-leading 10-year warranty that cannot be matched. The non-slip blue glass is coloured throughout, so you’ll never have to worry about the sparkle dulling over time. Blue Glass designers work with clients to choose the right colour for the look they’re trying to achieve. While it is important to like the look of a sample, the most crucial aspect of any pool design is the colour of the water, because that is how you will appreciate your pool — by the overall aesthetic of the water in your backyard. Blue Glass Pebble Company aims to create colours that stand out from the sea of plain and boring pool interiors. The glittering finishes will give your pool interior the consideration it needs to shine all year round. Don’t settle for inferior products — treat your pool with the most luxurious finish on the market. TYPES OF POOLS BACK TO BASICS A simple guide to help you understand the differences between the types of pools available S o you’ve made the decision to install a pool in your property, great! Now you need to decide what type of pool to install. We know there is a lot to get your head around, so we’ve put together this simple guide to the types of pools available so you can find the best option for your property, lifestyle, budget and timeframe. ABOVE-GROUND POOLS Often chosen due to the quick turnaround between purchase and installation, an above-ground swimming pool can be installed within a day and used that night. As the name suggests, above-ground pools sit on top of the ground and don’t require land excavation. They are prefabricated, meaning they’re built off-site and delivered to your property complete. Above-ground pools can be either vinyllined or fibreglass and come in a range of shapes, sizes, colours and styles. This type of swimming pool is often cheaper than in-ground options because they are easier and quicker to install (requiring no or minimal excavation). Above-ground pools are often an economical and logical choice for use on a sloping block, where the water level of the pool can sit at the same level as the ground floor of the home. An added bonus of an above-ground pool is that it’s transportable, meaning you can sell it or take it with you if you move house. IN-GROUND POOLS In-ground swimming pools sit below the ground and require excavation. They are a more expensive option than above-ground pools as they require 8 more time to plan and construct or install depending on the type of pool you choose. You may wish to choose a prefabricated fibreglass or vinyllined pool, which can be delivered and installed to the hole in the ground, or a concrete pool, which is custom-built to fit your space. With in-ground pools, a fair bit of planning and preparation is involved, particularly when underground pipes need to be moved to fit the pool in the desired space. However, the effort is often worth the challenges as on standard flat blocks, in-ground pools tend to make the space feel more open. CONCRETE POOLS Often the costliest option and the most timeconsuming to build, concrete pools require planning, designing and building as they’re completely customised to suit your space and lifestyle. This means you have unlimited options in terms of size, depth, shape, colour and style. You may wish to incorporate a negative edge, a wading area for children, a spa, steps, benches, jets, a water feature, curves, straight edges — the options really are endless. The interior of a concrete pool can be finished in ceramic tiles, pebblecrete, coloured quartz, epoxy, vinyl lining. With a concrete pool, there is no pool manufacturer — your builder creates the pool from scratch — so you are 100 per cent reliant on them to deliver a quality product that works well. Therefore, it’s crucial to do your research and choose a builder you trust and who fully understands your pool requirements. FIBREGLASS POOLS Fibreglass pools are prefabricated, meaning they are built in a factory and delivered to your property on a truck. They have a very smooth surface area and can be finished in a range of colours. One of the main benefits of choosing a fibreglass pool is the low maintenance required to keep it clean and functional. The fibreglass surface, known as gelcoat, is non-porous so there are fewer areas for algae to grow. For the same reason, fewer chemicals are needed to keep the pool healthy. This type of pool is very quick to install, usually two days, and is long-lasting due to the fact there is no liner or added interior (just the durable gelcoat finish). The initial cost of a fibreglass pool is higher than a vinyl-lined pool but less than a concrete pool. One of the main reasons people choose not to install a fibreglass pool is because they can’t find a shape and size to suit their space. It’s not possible for you to change the size, shape or depth of a fibreglass pool, so it’s a matter of searching and finding one that suits your requirements. VINYL-LINED POOLS This type of pool is the least expensive to buy and install. Vinyl-lined pools are available as standard models, however the shape, size and depth can also be customised to fit your space and intended use for the pool. The surface of a vinyl-lined pool is smooth, durable and usually resistant to algae. Despite being the cheapest option, vinyl-lined pools do require their liners to be replaced every five to nine years (which is usually around $4000).
Depending on how long you intend to have the pool, this cost can add up over the years. LAP POOLS While a lap pool doesn’t have a specific size range, generally this type of pool is much longer than it is wide, allowing the user to swim laps. Usually, the width of a lap pool starts at around 2.5m and the length can be anywhere from 8m to 25m (or more). Generally, the depth is consistent throughout the pool, however some owners may wish to add a deeper end to add flexibility to the pool’s usage, for example a deeper area for kids to jump into. They can be custom-built concrete pools, vinyl-lined or fibreglass. Lap pools are becoming an increasingly popular choice for metropolitan homeowners due to their ability to fit into the often-unused space to the side of the home, without dominating the backyard. SWIM SPAS A swim spa is a pool with jets that creates a current for the user to swim against for fitness purposes. This type of pool is suitable for someone who likes the idea of utilising their pool for fitness, but lacks the space for a lap or full-sized pool. Most swim spas have heaters, which enable them to double as spas, and some even have seats around the edges for relaxing. Swim spas are purchased as a complete unit and installed into the ground, above ground or integrated into a deck. PLUNGE POOLS A plunge pool is a small pool that is deep enough for the whole body to be submerged in for a cool, refreshing experience. Traditionally, plunge pools were used to cool off and invigorate the senses after a sauna or spa, however due to their small size, they’re becoming a popular pool choice for people with small, inner-city backyards or courtyards. Typically, a plunge pool is a concrete pool that’s been custom-built and also doubles as a visual feature — often with beautiful ceramic tiles, lighting and other eye-catching design features. Most plunge pool owners will opt to use more expensive, stand-out tiles than a cheaper tile or pool interior as the overall cost to use these isn’t much higher due to the plunge pool’s small surface area. SHIPPING-CONTAINER POOLS Relatively new on the scene, shipping-container pools gained popularity in 2017 when Sticks and Wombat installed one on the TV series The Block in Elsternwick. These pools are a fibreglass pool insert that sits inside a shipping container. They are put together in a factory so there is less onsite work required. They are very quick to install and are a cost-effective option. These pools sit above ground so are ideal for homes on sloping blocks or when access from the second storey is preferred. Otherwise, they work well when accessed from the ground floor with stairs and a deck built around it. 9

HEATING POOL HEATING How to select the best heating to extend the swimming season WRITTEN WITH WATERCO Zane Solar panels from Waterco B eing able to use your swimming pool throughout the year should be a goal for pool owners who want to gain maximum returns on their investment. Installing the right pool heater can extend your swimming season by up to four months and beyond. Today, trans-seasonal pool heating is becoming even more commonplace, with a range of pool heating solutions to choose from, depending on your budget, location and lifestyle. Creating and maintaining the ideal pool temperature doesn’t come naturally. While pool water predominantly hovers around the 18- to 20-degree Celsius mark, it takes a designated heating system to bump it up to comfortable levels — around 25 to 29 degrees. There are three main heating options to choose from: solar, gas and heat pumps. 12 EvoHeat Edge-i heat pump is ideal for tight installation locations
HEATING After the initial set-up cost of solar heating, the ongoing running expenses are minimal as heat is provided free from the sun. Image: Waterco Electroheat MKV Solar systems are a low-cost method to heat up your pool and have minimal operating costs. Image: Waterco SOLAR Waterco solar roof system Undeniably the most environmentally friendly option of all, solar pool heating operates by using the energy of the sun. In a solar pool heater, pool water is pumped through the filter and then through one or more solar thermal collectors via a solar pump located on the roof, where it is heated before it is returned to the pool. Unlike other pool heaters on the market, solar pays for itself in just a few years. After the initial set-up cost, the ongoing running expenses are minimal as heat is provided free from the sun. Solar systems have virtually no operating costs, just the cost of electricity to pump the pool water through the solar absorber on the roof. Solar heating systems are also simple to maintain. The amount of heat absorbed and the subsequent increase in temperature depends on three key criteria: - The size or area for the collector and the number of tubes per square metre. - The location of the collector. - The quality of the collector system. Ultimately, the biggest influence is the exposure to the sun. So if you live in an area that does not get a great deal of sunlight, your roof is under a significant amount of shade, or you don’t have sufficient roof space, then a solar system is not a viable option. A solar pool heater works well as a complement to a heat pump or gas heater. 13
HEATING HEAT PUMPS Reliable, highly efficient and economical to run, heat pumps extract heat from the air (similar to a reverse-cycle air conditioner) and use that heat to produce hot water. Compared to gas and electric element heating, heat pumps use just a fraction of the energy to generate the same amount of heat. Benefits of heat pumps include their high energy efficiency and lower running costs. As a guide, you can save up to 80 per cent over LPG, 50 per cent over natural-gasfuelled heaters and 500 per cent over electric heaters. One of the disadvantages of this type of system is that it can lose its high energy efficiency slightly once the weather really cools down, as the pump has to work harder to heat the water against the outside temperature. However, unless you live in an area that experiences very low winter temperature, this should not be a concern. INVERTER HEAT PUMPS An inverter heat pump is one of the more popular heating choices as customers are enticed by the heating efficiency, low noise levels and lower running costs. Inverter heat pumps feature a 14 Electroheat ECO-V inverter pool heat pumps utilise a variable speed compressor to regulate the pool water temperature automatically and independently smart controller and a variable compressor, which enables the fan to slow down or speed up, depending on the pool water temperature. This automatic controlling system prevents the heater from using more energy than necessary. Davey heat pump

HEATING Heating digital control from Waterco GAS Gas heaters are the fastest method for heating your pool, providing a comfortable temperature for swimming on demand. Put simply, they could extend your swimming season yearround. Gas heating systems use natural gas or LPG, heating the pool water by pumping it through a heating unit. A key advantage of a gas heater is it can heat pool water much faster than a solar or heat pump system can and will heat the pool water up to 40 degrees Celsius, no matter how cold the climate is. Gas heaters are also able to 16 Waterco gas Turbotemp heater maintain any desired temperature regardless of the weather. Selecting the right size gas heater depends on three key factors: - The amount of water to be heated. - How long you are prepared to wait for your pool to heat up. - Your preferred swimming temperature. Many offer dual-temperature controls, which are ideal for spas that are heated to higher temperatures than pools. No system is without some drawbacks — gas could be considered less efficient compared to heat pumps and solar heating systems, but this depends largely on the climate you live in and the gas supply.

FILTRATION Image: Coastal Pools & Spas POOL FILTRATION SYSTEMS Essential equipment to keep your pool healthy and free of contaminants Waterco Exotuf sand filter P ool filters are absolutely essential pool equipment as they screen debris and unwanted particles out of the water, keeping your pool looking crystal clear and free of potentially harmful pollutants. The type of filter you need depends on the type of pool you have, your budget, and how much time you’re willing to spend on maintenance. The quality of filtration depends, to a large extent, on the size of the filter media — the finer the media, the higher the purity of water achieved. There are many options, including sand/media filters, cartridge filters and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters, as well as filters that use crushed glass/glass beads and ZeoPlus rock. CARTRIDGE FILTERS Cartridge filters typically use a number of cylindrical accordion-pleated filters to filter impurities larger than 30 microns. Key benefits of cartridge filters include no need for backwashing, which saves on water costs, and the need for a backwash line. On the other hand, 20 Waterco Trimline cartridge filter cartridges need to be dissembled for cleaning and may require replacement more often than sand/ media filters. SAND / MEDIA Manufactured with high-grade fibreglass and resins for durability, sand/media is one of the most popular choices on the market, thanks to its durability and simplicity. Depending on the medium and/or brand, these units will filter contaminants larger than 30-40 microns and give you years of clean pool water. While sand/media filters are easy to clean, the filter media needs to be replaced approximately every five years. The filters often need a larger installation space compared to other filter options. Note that the use of a sand/media filter predicates the need for a backwash line, which is not always viable. DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (DE) Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters are highly efficient, trapping particles down to three to five microns. These products use a pressure gauge to indicate the need for backwashing and require DE filter powder to be added to the skimmer to work. DE powder is made up of microscopic subaquatic creatures called diatoms, that look like tiny sponges and soak up contaminates inside your pool. PERLITE Perlite is a product that can be used in your DE filter. It’s a naturally occurring siliceous, volcanic rock that expands up to 20 times its volume when heated. Perlite has microscopic holes running through it that can trap even the finest particles. As perlite is small in size, it moves very efficiently through the filter, however this does mean more product is lost through backwashing. ZEOPLUS ZeoPlus is a naturally occurring mineral naturally released. When ammonia and traditional chlorine pool additives are mixed together, a chlorine odour is produced. ZeoPlus reduces the demand for chlorine and lessens the chlorine odour. It’s also less irritating to the skin and eyes.

FILTRATION CRUSHED GLASS / GLASS BEADS Crushed glass filters (made from recycled glass) and glass beads (manufactured from pure glass) are among the newest filter media options on the market and offer excellent filtration levels. Both media are chemically inert, safe and high in purity. However, glass beads, being manufactured, have a small advantage in this area. One of the benefits of both media is that only 20 per cent of the water you would normally use to backwash a sand filter is required. Waterco Micron ECO S602 sand filter Waterco MultiCyclone centrifugal filter Davey cartridge filter Davey cartridge filter Davey media filter SIZE MATTERS Once you have chosen the right type of filter for your pool, it is important to get it sized correctly. It should be sized to match the pool pump, which must match the circulation needs of the pool. If the filter is too small, it will fill up quickly 22 and, unable to handle the workload, may not backwash adequately. It may also require more frequent maintenance. Inadequate backwashing from an underperforming pump is also a characteristic of an oversized filter.

Pool tiles can be small and laid in a mosaic pattern, or larger and grouted in any colour to either blend or contrast with the tile. Some people choose to use pool tiles just above the waterline to create the illusion of a tiled pool without the cost. While they’re initially a more expensive option than other pool interiors, tiles do stand out due to their glamorous and timeless look. “A fully tiled pool is also often easier to clean and maintain,” says Carl Yench of Europe Imports. “The initial costs of fully tiling are forgotten quickly compared to the quality which will last a lifetime.” VINYL LINER Vinyl-lined pools can be manufactured in a factory and delivered on site, saving the homeowner time and money. This material is fairly affordable and easy to work with, so it’s also commonly used in pool renovations. Vinyl-lined pools are quite durable and are less prone to cracking compared with other types of pool materials. This is due to the vinyl being able to bend slightly, withstanding movement in or on the ground. PEBBLECRETE Pebblecrete is a mixture of pebbles and cement that is applied to the interior of a concrete pool. 24 As its name suggests, the finished look is a coating of tiny pebbles on the floor and walls of the pool. Pebblecrete comes in a wide variety of colours. This product is well wearing, however it is prone to cracking as time goes on. These cracks can generally be repaired easily by reapplying pebblecrete to the damaged area. BEADCRETE Beadcrete is made up of glass beads that create a shimmering effect in the pool. The glass beads are manufactured in the form of small spheres, and mixed into a cement before applied to the pool in a similar way to pebblecrete. The product is long lasting, low maintenance and stain resistant. POLYESTER COATINGS Polyester coating is a gel-like substance that is applied to the pool floor and walls like a thick paint. While traditionally used to repair cracks, polyester coating can also be used to cover the entire pool. This product often has superior UVand chemical-resistant properties. EPOXY PAINT Epoxy paint is a coating system that is painted over a pool surface, generally to restore a dated pool. Epoxy paint is suitable for use over concrete surfaces as well as pebblecrete or fibreglass. When finished, epoxy paint creates a pool interior that is resistant to chemicals, salt, is low maintenance and easy to clean. with Michael Kettewell of Blue Glass Pebble Company Blue Glass Pebble Compay has launched a new colour, Hamptons. It is a blend of white glass beads, mother of pearl shells, genuine New Zealand white pebble Hamptons and pure white cement. The combination of colours and materials creates an amazingly shimmery white pool surface, which also results in an incredibly inviting pale-blue water colour. “We created this product as we noticed many customers seeking whiter pool finishes often to match their Hamptonsstyle homes,” explains Blue Glass Pebble Company manager Michael Kettewell. POOL TILE HINTS WITH CARL YENCH OF EUROPE IMPORTS 1 When selecting a glass mosaic for a fully tiled pool, find the water colour that you want to achieve first and then find the mosaics that can achieve the selected water colour. 2 Select only premium-quality stone that is high density and seal with a quality penetrating sealer like Chemforce. 3 Always use quality tilers who have experience tiling pools and surrounds and ensure they are familiar with the products to be installed. We recommend consulting with the distributor for installation specifications and advice. POOL PLASTER Pool plaster, white coat or marcite is a bright white plaster that is applied to a concrete pool to create a water-tight seal. Comprised of ground calcium carbonates (limestone) and calcium magnesium carbonate (dolomite or dolomitic limestone), pool plaster has a bright white finish that looks classic and clean when filled with water. NATURAL STONE Natural stone such as sandstone, travertine and granite has been a popular choice for poolside paving, however it’s also gaining popularity as a pool interior material. Stone can be an expensive choice for use inside a pool, but being a natural product, its unique patterns and appealing textures can create a pretty special feature that looks and feels great. Stone needs to be carefully sealed before it can hold water, so it’s important to confirm with the stone supplier that your chosen stone can be sealed.

POOL PUMPS Waterco variable speed pump POOL PUMPS Selecting an appropriately sized pool pump T he pump is the heart of your swimming pool’s filtration system. Without it, your pool would lose its sparkle and soon turn green. Choosing the right pump will ensure you experience fewer problems, as well as more efficient energy use and lower running costs — not to mention better pool water clarity. Whether you’re after a pump for a new pool, or a replacement pump for an existing pool, there is a range of energy-efficient models from which to choose. Many incorporate the latest technology to deliver the right combination of performance and energy savings. Davey Silensor 28 WHAT TYPE OF PUMP? The first step in choosing such a pump is to determine the volume of your pool. Match the figure to a pump which will, ideally, pump all the water in the pool in six to eight hours. It is best for a pool expert to assist with the decision-making process involved in choosing a pump. Ask the experts to assess your pool configuration and plumbing to work out the hydraulics and select the most appropriate pump in terms of performance and energy efficiency. The experts will take into consideration the size of the pool, its volume of water as well as roles Davey PowerMaster ECO Waterco ECO Speed Selection

DOMESTIC PUMPS ANCILLARY PUMPS Your choices will include a variety of domestic pumps that can be used in applications ranging from spas to above-ground pools and large domestic in-ground pools. Some domestic pump models are only suitable for smaller-sized swimming pools, so check with the experts before purchasing and installing any pump system. Ancillary pumps are used for purposes other than filtration. An ancillary pump could be a dedicated pump for solar heating, whether integrated (drawing water from the filtration circuit) or independently plumbed (drawing water directly from the pool and returning heated water to the pool on a separate circuit). Davey PowerMaster 30 Most domestic pumps are used for the purpose of recirculation, drawing water from the pool and pumping water through the filter. It is the filtration pump that normally operates the longest hours, with the average domestic pool pump running for around six to eight hours a day. Domestic pumps can be used in conjunction with pool ancillaries such as heating, in-floor cleaning and water features. Waterco pumps Other examples of ancillary pump applications include water features, dedicated pumps for swim jets, in-floor cleaners or pressure pool cleaners. ENERGY-SAVING PUMPS Unlike conventional pool pumps, which are limited to one set speed, energy-saving pumps have multiple speed settings, which enable the pump to be more efficient in its energy usage. Also known as multiple or variable-speed pumps, they can be set to different speeds according to how quickly you would like to pump water through the filter, thus saving energy and reducing running costs. You can operate a variable-speed pump on its low-speed setting for a majority of its running time, leading to significant energy savings. High speed may only be required for backwashing a sand filter and pool maintenance activities such as vacuuming.

CLEANING POOL CLEANERS How to select the right cleaner for your pool and lifestyle WRITTEN WITH WATERCO A n automatic pool cleaner removes a great deal of debris from the floor and walls of your pool. There are four kinds of automatic pool cleaners on the Australian market: suction, robotic, in-floor and pressure cleaners. But how do you know which one will be right for your pool? We’ve asked Waterco for a rundown of the features, pros and cons of each type. SUCTION Suction cleaners are one of the most popular cleaners on the market. They are fixed to the pool’s skimmer and operate on the suction created by the pool’s pump, acting like an underwater vacuum cleaner. They are also attached to your pool’s filter system as they need to deposit leaves and larger debris in the skimmer box, and the finer sediment is trapped in the pool’s filter system. 32 Pros: - While a suction cleaner sucks debris off the bottom of the pool, it also sucks water through the filtration system, turning over more water in a shorter amount of time. - Can remove finer particles because it is attached to your filter. - Cheapest pool cleaner option. - Easy to install and use. Cons: - There are various restrictions of suction cleaners, including the fact that they are fitted into a pool’s skimmer, reducing the pool’s skimming ability to clean the debris at the surface of the pool water and also reducing its turnover by adding a restriction to its pool circulation. The debris goes straight to the filtration system, which requires backwashing or maintenance. - To operate the cleaner effectively, the pool pump needs to operate at higher speeds, negating any energy savings from the use of variable speed pumps. The large-capacity Waterco Leaf Trapper stores debris is automatically swept into the main for easy maintenance drain and sent to the leaf trapper ROBOTIC The new-generation robotic pool cleaners are gaining popularity with time-poor homeowners who want to spend the day enjoying their pool instead of vacuuming. Robotic cleaners vacuum and trap pool debris in self-contained compartments or bags. This technique saves you from having to do excessive backwashing or rinsing the pool’s filter, which is the case with suctionstyle cleaners. Robotic cleaners are not connected to anything and some have remote controls to control the cleaner’s movements or to program the cleaner for specific cleaning functions. You can automatically and systematically clean your swimming pool without relying on the operation of filtering equipment. The result is a dramatic reduction in energy costs when compared to all other types of automatic pool cleaners. Pros: - Today’s top-of-the-line robotic cleaners combine user-friendly operation with water, energy and chemical conservation features. - Require minimal electrical power to operate the inbuilt pump and motor. - Independent to the pump and filter system, allowing better circulation of water. - It will free up the skimmer box and enable leaves to be skimmed from the surface of the pool. 34 - Some can be controlled by remote control to allow you to guide it to those hard-toclean spots. - Equipped with scrubbing brushes, so not only do they vacuum the pool’s floor and/ or walls, they also scrub the actual surface, regardless of whether it’s vinyl, fibreglass or concrete. - Minimal maintenance and effort on your part. - Helps to circulate water through the pool, resulting in less algae growth and improved water chemistry. Dolphin Ultimate pool cleaner by Waterco Cons: - Most expensive type of cleaner (prices starting from $1000 to over $2000). - It’s recommended by manufacturers that you remove the cleaner after each use. - The cleaner’s internal filter bag or cartridge requires emptying and cleaning. - The cleaner’s cable needs to be wound up and stored correctly after each operation.

CLEANING IN-FLOOR An in-floor cleaning system is designed prior to the swimming pool being constructed or manufactured, depending on the pool interior. It consists of a series of heads that pop up in the floor and steps of the pool. This is not dissimilar to pop-up heads in your garden sprinkler system. Their purpose is to drive the dirt and debris towards a drain point, usually located in the deep end of the pool. Once the dirt is removed from the drain point by the pump, it usually passes into the filtration system where it will get trapped. In leafy pools, there is an additional primary straining point, which catches the heavy leaf matter before the filtration. Every system is designed individually as pools often have different shapes and sizes. In-floor systems also aid in chemical distribution and heat circulation throughout the pool. Some systems rely solely on the filtration pump to drive them and others require a separate pump to operate the cleaning system. Pros: - Ideally suited for difficult-shaped pools and lap pools. - It can handle very high debris levels. - It will free up the skimmer box and enable leaves to be skimmed from the surface of the pool. - Minimal maintenance and effort on your part. - Helps to circulate water through the pool, resulting in less algae growth and improved water chemistry. - Aids heating circulation throughout the pool. Cons: - Doesn’t clean the wall of the pool. - Needs be fitted to pool during the construction stage. - May require a separate dedicated pump to operate it. Cooke Industries QuikClean Xtreme Pool: Countrywide Pools 36

CLEANING PRESSURE A pressure cleaner attaches to your pool’s pump system to clean the pool with a combination of suction and jet action. The water pressure from a dedicated pressure booster pump moves the cleaner around the pool, which gives the cleaner its name. It has its own attached mesh bag, into which it deposits dirt and debris. Pros: - Most suited to a pool located underneath a large number of overhanging trees. - It deposits dirt and debris into its own bag, which means debris is not deposited in the skimmer or pool filter. - It will free up the skimmer box and enable leaves to be skimmed from the surface of the pool. - The pressure cleaner is a quick and efficient way to clean the pool. - Mid-range pricing. - Helps to circulate water through the pool, resulting in less algae growth and improved water chemistry. Cons: - Doesn’t scrub the pool’s floor or walls. - Cannot filter small particles through the bag. - Not only requires the normal filtration system to be operating, but also requires the addition of a pressure booster pump. This increases energy consumption and ultimately cost. SANITISATION MAINTAINING A HEALTHY, SANITISED POOL WRITTEN WITH WATERCO T he health hazards associated with early-20thcentury swimming pools without modern forms of sanitation are well documented. Simply replacing dirty water, the common solution “back in the day”, did nothing to halt the formation and growth of algae and harmful bacteria. The obvious need for more effective pool sanitation methods led directly to the development of the first chemical form of sanitation, chlorine/ bromine. Variations of this basic solution are still in use today as chlorine remains the most popular solution when it comes to reducing the levels of microorganisms and pathogens (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans and algae) in pools. However, for many years, pool owners and users have complained about allergies such as asthma, eczema and eye irritations that can be triggered by chlorine. Today, the focus of the swimming pool industry is increasingly on the development of chlorine-free and chlorine-minimising alternatives. UV AND OZONE Ultraviolet (UV) pool systems and ozone generators are becoming popular choices. However, there is still a degree of confusion surrounding the science behind these water sanitation processes. Ozone (O3) is a gas that can be created inside a chamber by passing oxygen through either a light energy field (called UV ozone) or an electrical energy Davey ChloroMatic Lifeguard offers simple, automated pool chemistry control and monitoring 42 Waterco Chemflo and pumps Naked Fresh Water Pool Systems field (called CD ozone). When dissolved in water, ozone will kill pathogens and microorganisms, destroy organics and inorganics and also break down chloramines through oxidation. The oxidation reaction happens when an ozone molecule collides with an oxidisable substance — such as algae, bacteria, sweat, urine, mould spores and protozoa — which then causes the weakly bonded third oxygen atom to split off. During this reaction, organic molecules are destroyed and dissolved metals become insoluble. The leftover by-product is O2. Ozone is a significantly stronger oxidiser than chlorine and is able to kill chlorine-resistant bacteria. UV pool sanitisers (also known as Germicidal UV systems) pass water through a chamber and expose it to light, which kills microorganisms and breaks down chloramines using light energy. In order to sanitise water, specific UV light rays must be used which alter or disrupt the DNA or RNA of microorganisms such as algae, bacteria, viruses, mould spores and protozoa. This essentially destroys the microorganisms as they pass through the UV chamber. Both ozone and UV are also compatible with chlorine and are environmentally friendly technologies. However, ozone is able to provide oxidation and UV is not, which is a key characteristic of ozone. UV systems use light rays alone to disrupt DNA or RNA of microorganisms. ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES (AOP) SYSTEMS Adding to the confusion is the role of advanced oxidation processes (AOP). Essentially a wastewater-treatment process, it has only recently become an affordable option for residential pools. The technologies underpinning ozone and UV systems come together to form the basis for an AOP solution. Ozone and UV technology are combined into one cohesive system that creates synergistic sanitation which maximises disinfection, water clarity and chloramine removal. In an AOP system, ozone gas is dissolved in water and then passes through a chamber with a germicidal ultraviolet lamp. When UV energy is combined with ozone, it creates a chemical reaction resulting in hydroxyl radicals — powerful oxidisers that can kill pathogens and microorganisms as well as destroy inorganic contaminants in the water. They are stronger oxidisers than ozone alone. In order for AOP to function, both ozone and UV are needed. As water flows through the system, hydroxyl radicals are formed continuously. This cannot occur without ozone. The more ozone molecules in the system, the more hydroxyl radicals are created. After the hydroxyl radicals oxidise contaminants in the water, they quickly convert back to oxygen. This makes AOP a safe, sustainable and green technology. It also provides the cleanest pool water with the lowest amount of chlorine needed. IONISATION Ionisers are a very effective low-chemical, lowenergy system, designed to assist in the control of algae and bacteria. “When used as directed, they do this very well, and that’s why our customers love them,” says John Horwood, director of Aquavic. This low chemical method is aimed at controlling bacteria, algae and viruses in the water. The essence of its design dates back to the early days of space exploration, when an electrolytic silver-ion generator was used to sanitise the water supply and waste-water systems of spacecraft. NASA released the design information to the industrial world and ionisation subsequently found its way into the swimming pool arena. In addition to being an environmentally friendly method of water sanitation, key advantages of

SANITISATION ionisation include improved water quality, effective algae and bacteria control, reduced chemical usage and low cost. “Ionisation has been used extensively in Europe, Asia and the United States, and is being increasingly recognised as a low-chemical, ‘greener’ alternative to residential pool systems,” says John. Salt chlorinator installed with swimming pool equipment. Image: Waterco SALT WATER CHLORINATION A sanitising system that has gained a reputation as a safe, reliable and cost-effective method of disinfecting pools is salt water chlorination (SWC). Initial capital costs may be higher than other sanitiser options, but lower operating costs and high levels of safety give SWC a competitive edge. Salt water chlorination uses chlorine produced in the pool water from ordinary salt. Developed in Australia more than three decades ago, the technology is favoured by many pool owners. The process occurs via electrolysis, using ordinary salt and a chlorine generator. As water passes over the chlorinator’s specially coated electrolytic plates, an electric current breaks down the salt and water into their basic elements to form sodium hypochlorite, which is the active sanitiser in all forms of chlorine. The chlorine kills algae and bacteria in the water and oxidises the waste. Thereafter, the chlorine regenerates itself back to salt and begins the process over again in a virtually unending cycle. Since salt does not evaporate, only an occasional addition of salt is needed to replace what is lost due to the splash out, pumping out, draining or backwashing. The only maintenance required with salt water pools, other than maintaining the water chemical balance, is periodical cleaning of the cell electrodes. Some SWC systems come standard with self-cleaning capabilities. Waterco Hydroclor MK3 and cell 44 An electric current breaks down the salt and water into their basic elements to form sodium hypochlorite. Image: Waterco MAGNESIUM POOL MANAGEMENT When it comes to skin soothing, the effectiveness of bathing in magnesium has been documented in the health and wellness industry for decades. Now, pool owners can transform their pools into therapeutic oases by adding magnesium in the form of a commercially available, branded product. Working alongside existing water-balancing chemicals, fast-dissolving magnesium duct not only improves pool water with a blend of naturally occurring minerals, but also moisturises your skin as you swim. Magnesium is also known for its mild flocking abilities, which help to filter out particularly fine materials such as dust and dirt. This reduces the need for additional chemicals like clarifiers and algaecides, contributing to cost savings. When it comes to chemical maintenance of pool water, chemical dosers and pH management systems help pool owners automatically analyse their pool water chemistry and accurately sanitise and control the pH level, keeping the water safe and healthy. Automatic control systems measure and precisely control set levels of sanitiser and pH balance through feedback from sensors. This ensures the safest possible swimming conditions. In addition, the systems help minimise chemical use and prevent excessive addition of chemicals that may damage the pool and its equipment. Another integral feature of these systems is their ability to automatically respond to seasonal demand — eliminating problems associated with periods when very high or low chlorine levels are experienced. Fewer fluctuations in chlorine levels mean fewer fluctuations in pH levels and more stable, balanced water. It is important to note that pool sanitation is impossible, regardless of the amount of chemicals used, if the water is not properly balanced. In addition, maintaining the pH balance of the pool is important as it helps to sustain the longevity of equipment and finishes. Water can either corrode surfaces or deposit a white scale film on them. Improper pool sanitation may therefore lead to costly and often unnecessary repairs. Naked Fresh Water Pool Systems

OUTDOOR COOKING Unique Fire Pits CLOSE THAT LID WHAT’S COOKING? Want to impress guests? You can with a new outdoor kitchen or state-of-the-art barbecue I f you’re Australian and you like to cook and entertain outside, a barbecue will be at the top of your must-have list. If you like to entertain a lot, then you might go a step further and set up an “all the bells and whistles” outdoor kitchen. After all, having everything at your fingertips, which means no more dashing inside the house for this or that, translates to more time spent relaxing with family or chatting with friends. Outdoor kitchens and well-equipped barbecue areas can be found in backyards all around Australia as people move out of their interior kitchens and into their gardens to entertain, says Ben Farley of Bar-Be School. And what is the focal point of these outdoor kitchens? That’s right, the not-so-humble barbecue. Today, says Ben, families want barbecues that have the “wow factor”. If you want to have a barbecue that looks good and will cook your favourite fare, you need to know what’s on offer. So what’s hot in barbecues, you ask? According to John McGran from Lifestyle BBQs, the outdoor kitchen-style barbecue continues to grow in popularity. These are sophisticated barbecue units, sometimes available in modular configurations, which might include cabinets, a benchtop, a sink or a fridge. In terms of materials, John believes stainlesssteel cabinetry teamed with benchtops made of natural stone, such as granite, will remain in vogue. “These materials represent quality and durability, and they look great together,” he says. However, it’s not only the barbecues that take all the outdoor cooking glory; firepits can also 48 create scrumptious flavours and a unique cooking experience. “Steak, fish, sausages, vegetables and damper can all be cooked over a Unique Fire Pit as all our firepits can have a grill adapted to them so they can be used as a barbecue,” explains Ricardo Fioravanti from Unique Fire Pits. “It’s sometimes a matter of trial and error before you get the hang of how hot to have the coals, how long to cook items for and when to turn them.” It’s a commonly asked question: should you barbecue with the lid on? Jamie Purviance, author of Weber’s Barbecue Bible, says: “Whether using a charcoal barbecue or a gas barbecue, the lid is really important. It limits the amount of air getting to the fire, thus preventing flare-ups, and it helps to cook food on the top and bottom simultaneously. While the bottom of the food is almost always exposed to more intense heat, the lid reflects some heat down and speeds up the overall cooking time. “Plus, using the lid keeps the cooking grill at a higher temperature, giving you more conductive heat, which creates better searing and caramelisation. Finally, the lid traps all those good smoky aromas inside the barbecue and surrounds your food with them. Otherwise, the smoke will drift away and serve no real purpose.” Weber’s Barbecue Bible (published by Murdoch Books, rrp$35) is full of useful tips along with more than 150 barbecue recipes. BARBECUE CARE 1 Put your barbecue on a high setting for five minutes (without the hood) to burn off all excess grease. 2 Turn off the gas cylinders. Let your barbecue burn out and then switch the barbecue burners off. This will clear any excess gas from your barbecue hose. 3 Scrub the cooking surfaces with clean warm water or suitable oil and grease remover and then dry. 4 Spray the cast-iron or steel plates and grill with vegetable oil. This handy trick will prevent rusting. 5 For the outside of the barbecue, use a wet rag (no wire brushes — you don’t want any scratches) to wipe everything clean and bring out the shine. 6 Place a protective cover over your barbecue when finished. POOL COVERS AND DOMES POOL COVERS AND DOMES Protect your pool from debris, water evaporation and heat loss Aussie UnderCover 50

POOL COVERS AND DOMES Aussie UnderCover Aussie UnderCover S wimming pool covers used to be as simple as a piece of plastic stretched across the surface of the water to keep leaves, dirt and other debris from being blown into the water. But as technology has advanced, pool covers have improved. Today, not only do they form a barrier to debris, they save you money by preventing evaporation and chemical loss as well as maintaining water temperature. THE EVAPORATION CHALLENGE Evaporation is likely to be the biggest source of energy loss in your swimming pool. Approximately every millimetre of evaporation equates to one litre of water per square metre, resulting in a potential loss of thousands of litres of pool water per season. “Enclosing your pool reduces evaporation, meaning you’ll spend less money and time topping up water,” says Courtney James, managing director of Suncoast Enclosures. Additionally, chemical (like chlorine and salt) consumption can be reduced by 50 per cent or more when a pool cover is added to the pool. ENERGY CONSERVATION Over winter, a pool cover acts as a barrier between the cold air and the warmer pool water. This is particularly beneficial if you have a heat pump, solar or gas system installed, as the heat they generate won’t be instantly lost. It also means the system won’t have to work as hard, so you can reduce running times and save on heating costs. 52 TPEC Enclosures

Ideally, they should be installed during the construction phase when the motor and drivetrain can be fully integrated into the pool design and located below ground and out of sight. That said, certain vendors are able to supply retro-fitted integration options. Automatic pool covers have come a long way over the last five years, from cleverly concealed covers that hide in the deck, paving or synthetic grass to in-floor pool covers that come out from the bottom of the pool. Remco Pool Cover DOMED POOL ENCLOSURES Retractable roofs on pool enclosures allow for full ventilation on hot days and an indoor pool on others. The open section can be screened to stop bugs and debris from entering the pool. Enclosing your pool cuts costs on expensive pool chemicals and keeps the water warm, lengthening your swimming season. “Our pool enclosures are custom built to suit the style of the house and the requirements of the owner, providing versatile and stylish solutions for an indoor/outdoor area,” says Courtney. They can be incorporated into the design of a new pool or added to an existing pool. All pool enclosures are permanent fully enclosed structures, permitting swimming year-round within a warm, controlled and weatherimpervious environment. 54 Suncoast Enclosures

FENCING FENCING Top tips for designing a pool fence without ruining your outdoor aesthetic A sparkling glass fence that’s been treated with EnduroShield MATT LEACY, LANDART LANDSCAPES W ith more than 1.2 million Australians owning a pool and council laws across the nation requiring many property owners to have a pool fence — even if retrospectively installed — the balance between legal compliance and great landscape design is becoming increasingly difficult to strike. With this in mind, here are my top tips for installing a pool fence without ruining the look and feel of your outdoor space. 58 THE KEY IS IN COLLABORATION One of the best ways to ensure you get the fence installation right is to get a landscape designer involved from the start of the process to ensure proper design considerations are factored into the installation plan. A landscape designer is going to look at things from a different angle and can help you explore avenues that may not seem open to you if you’re speaking only to the council. The optimal scenario is to have a meeting with your certifier and landscape designer at the same time. That way you can have an open conversation and throw around ideas to try to get to your preferred outcome — while also being sure your pool fence will meet council laws. Glass is the most seamless option as it can disappear into a landscape more than other materials, but it will cost you more in relation to a standard aluminium fence. If you’ve got a large space to fence, you might consider using glass for the most visible areas and then turn to a black-top aluminium fence that can be hidden in the garden and disappear around plants and the like. If you choose a powder-coated aluminium, go for a black colour as it disappears more than green if it’s up against plants. And whatever you do, steer clear of creams, reds and lighter colours because they stand out and often ruin the aesthetic of the backyard. WHAT MATERIALS LAST THE LONGEST? Durability is an important consideration, with glass also being a top contender when it comes to low maintenance and repairs. Most people 60 automatically assume that aluminium fences will require the least maintenance, but when it comes down to it, glass is super strong and often held in place by really high-quality stainless steel and reinforced concrete. Glass is also, in essence, more difficult to climb than other materials because it’s just a slippery front-faced surface. Compliance and design can go hand in hand. It’s important to understand what the pool fence laws are in your state and to seek professional advice to ensure you don’t install a fence that doesn’t meet the requirements. Installing a pool fence isn’t cheap, so you want to make sure you get it right the first time round. If your pool area backs up to one of the boundary fences, you need to ensure the boundary fence is also compliant. And while it might cost you a bit more up front to ensure that compliance and design both come out on top, the initial outlay is often worth it in the long term. Editor’s top tips 1. Skip the glass cleaner. Commercial glass cleaners tend to leave an unwanted residue on your glass that shows up as smudges and smears. Avoid bleach-based cleaners, too, as these will etch the glass over time. 2. Keep it simple. Clean with a microfibre cloth and warm soapy water. Rinse off well with a low-pressure garden hose. Air dry or use a good-quality squeegee to remove excess water. 3. Clean regularly. Spot clean any bird droppings as soon as you notice them and hose down the glass after use of the pool to remove any salt or chlorinated water. 4. Apply EnduroShield to your glass fence to create a protective barrier that reduces cleaning time. This can be applied DIY (with a three-year warranty) or professionally (for a 10-year warranty). “EnduroShield is an invisible, non-stick coating that reduces cleaning time by up to 90 per cent,” says Matthew Lewis from EnduroShield. “Application is a simple process of spraying the clear liquid coating onto a clean surface and polishing it in to create a non-stick barrier that is both water and oil repellent, and resistant to corrosion, etching and staining. With EnduroShield, you’ll not only spend less time cleaning glass, but also eliminate the need for harsh chemicals and use less water.”

LIGHTING UP IN LIGHTS Attractive, eye-catching lighting options D evelopments in technology have resulted in a flood of new underwater lighting options, all capable of transforming your pool into an inviting, friendly and mood-altering environment. For many owners, traditional incandescent lighting is a popular choice due to the comparatively low cost of installation, however there are many more options now on the market. They range from halogen lights to LEDs (lightemitting diodes), fibre-optic, flush-mounted, surface-mounted and multi-coloured lights — all in a number of different shapes and sizes. While it seems natural to focus on underwater lighting, the area around the pool is just as important from both aesthetic and safety perspectives. Why not create a welcoming ambience by installing soft lighting around the deck, along the pathways and at the landscaping features of your pool? Note that pool lighting techniques can produce different effects depending on the backdrop. The rule of thumb is that lighter surfaces tend to reflect light, while darker surfaces absorb it. Also, soft lighting emanating from many sources is more aesthetically pleasing than harsh lighting coming from only a few sources. Waterco HALOGEN LIGHTING For many years, halogen lighting has been one of the most commonly used in-pool lighting options, thanks to its brightness and easy maintenance. The main advantage halogen holds over LEDs is that you can simply change the globe when it has reached the end of its life, whereas an LED light needs to be completely replaced. Although halogens are initially cheaper to buy, halogen bulbs often consume more electricity than other types of light and are therefore more expensive in the long run. Halogen lights have a shorter lifespan of approximately 2000 to 4000 hours. Davey flush-mount Evenglow lights LED LIGHTING Evolving LED technology and design options have brought many changes to the pool lighting industry. LEDs’ growing acceptance is underpinned by their energy-efficiency and longevity benefits and their ability to be controlled via home automation systems. Although more expensive than halogen, LEDs operate on 15 per cent of the energy of a halogen light and run cooler as a result. LED lights have a lifespan of more than 50,000 hours on average. Today, the availability of high-quality, brighter LEDs is widespread and prices are falling. LIGHTING lights in different diameters, suited to concrete, fibreglass and vinyl-lined pools. LEDs are now available in a palette of different nt colours, doing away with the need for coloured lenses. The LED’s multicoloured combinations are re easily programmed via its switch, pool controllers, rs, home automation systems, or wirelessly via a remote control or mobile phone app. FIBRE-OPTIC LIGHTING If the colourful possibilities of LED lighting are appealing, then fibre-optic lighting should be as attractive as it shares many similar advantages. For example, fibre-optic lights can change colours to produce striking light shows. Waterco Niche MK5 lights SOLAR LIGHTING When it comes to lighting the pool’s surrounding areas, free-standing solar lights make a pleasant addition to almost any pool area. They can illuminate walkways and add highlights to surrounding pool features. They can also be used to illuminate the pool’s surface. Solar lights vary in performance and may not be bright or reliable enough (depending on the availability of sunlight to charge them) to eliminate ate the need for electrical lighting around the pool. However, they’re an eco-friendly complement when it comes to adding the finishing touches to your night-time poolscape. FLUSH-MOUNTED VS SURFACE-MOUNTED Flush-mounted or niche, in-pool lighting — either halogen or LED — is installed inside the wall of the pool so that it creates a smooth finish. All that can be seen is the face of the light. One of the main advantages of flushmounted lighting is placement flexibility. They can be placed almost anywhere in the pool, including near stairs, as they do not protrude and are not hazardous to swimmers. Another advantage is aesthetics; flushmounted lights don’t protrude from the pool wall and are generally regarded as better looking than surface-mounted lights. POOL AUTOMATION Waterco in-floor cleaning system POOL AUTOMATION How automated pool products can save you time and energy WRITTEN WITH WATERCO T hanks to advances in technology, pool ownership is today easier, simpler and more cost-effective than ever before. From programmable cleaners, automatic lighting and heating, water features and swim jets to chemical dosers that automatically control the pH and pool water sanitisation and automated pool covers, there is an automatic device — or devices — to suit all needs. These devices can significantly cut the time you spend on maintenance while, as a bonus, they also reduce your energy and chemical use. Automation has now reached the level where you can connect all your pool devices to a central control and manage them according to your personal needs. And thanks to improvements in wireless connectivity, the range of remote controls has broadened, which increases the appeal of these systems. CHEMICAL DOSING One of the most time-consuming tasks associated with pool maintenance can be identifying sanitiser and pH imbalances and calculating the correct doses of salt or chlorine. With inline sensors that continuously detect pH and sanitiser levels, automated chemical dosing systems take the responsibility for maintaining these two levels out of your hands. The regular and automatic top-up of sanitiser to the appropriate levels often reduces your overall chemical use — and the associated costs. Importantly, these systems also help ensure sanitiser residuals are maintained at a level sufficient to protect swimmers from eye and skin discomfort or irritation, while maintaining the pH of the water to a level that protects the pool and equipment from corrosion or scaling. 70 Waterco Aquamaster IN-FLOOR POOL CLEANING If you’re installing a new pool and are looking for the best in efficient and maintenance-reducing pool cleaning, consider installing a built-in, automated in-floor system. These systems consist of a series of heads that pop up in the floor itself and drive the dirt and debris towards a drain point. An additional leaf trapper prevents the filtration system from being overloaded with larger debris, such as leaves. In-pool cleaners are most often custom-designed for each pool, incorporating the most appropriate features. Automated in-floor pool cleaning systems enhance the circulation of water and treatment chemicals in the pool by optimising the pool’s water circulation. This helps minimise algae or spots. In-floor systems not only clean, but are also able to boost your pool’s heating effectiveness by introducing the heated water via the infloor jets. Since heat rises, the warm water is dispersed more evenly throughout the pool.

POOL AUTOMATION ROBOTIC POOL CLEANERS Traditionally, the number-one concession to pool automation has come in the form of a robotic pool cleaner. Today, the most advanced models are fully automated, taking the majority of everyday maintenance out of your hands. Robotic cleaners are user-friendly and operate in ways that reduce water, energy and chemical use. Being independent of the pool’s pump and filter system, they support improved water circulation while freeing up the skimmer box. By removing the majority of debris from your pool without a connection to the skimmer box, a robotic pool cleaner can reduce strain on this device, leaving it free to perform its primary function of skimming (and cleaning) the surface of the water. SALT CHLORINATION Making the switch to an automated salt chlorination sanitisation system will help reduce your chemical use. Salt chlorination systems represent an excellent choice. They maintain the pool’s sanitiser balance through the production of pure chlorine using salt. The chlorine is then added to the pool to keep the pool water adequately sanitised. Simply add the recommended levels of salt to the chlorinator and set the desired level of chlorine. The automated system will do the rest. Equipped with self-cleaning cells that remove internal calcium build-up, modern salt chlorinators are extremely low maintenance. A Davey automation system allows you to stay in control of the heater, sanitiser, pumps and more using your mobile device from anywhere. VARIABLE SPEED PUMPS Waterco Aquamaster By automating the function of a variable speed pool pump, energy savings are maximised. The process is in line with the requirements of the pool, such as the management of pool heating, where the most energy-efficient means of heating are utilised. Specifically, the automation process will address the management of pool equipment scheduling, including integrated pool heating systems incorporating solar heating, heat pumps and gas heaters. In this regard, automation contributes to reduced heating costs by integrating commands that maximise the use of solar pool heating to gain free energy from the sun (on sunny days) before activating conventional forms of heating, as necessary. TOTAL AUTOMATION Today, there are systems available that put complete automation within your reach. Easy to install and operate via remote LCD touch screens, they help you program all the devices connected to your pool with ease. These automated and computer-managed systems only allow connected devices to run or operate when necessary, saving energy. Moreover — from a safety perspective — they operate only when adequate water flow is available. This can extend the lifespan of your pump and heating systems and reduce the need for costly unplanned maintenance or repairs. 72
