that wow
The latest collection from Clarissa Hulse
sees walls being transformed with
colour and pattern for the season ahead,
and we're here for it! Beautiful murals
adorned with Clarissa's Serendipity
design have been treated to four new
colourways. Every flower, leaf, stem and
seedhead that features in the design
was collected by Clarissa and has been
digitally imposed to create Serendipity.
We love the calming Stone option for a
relaxing retreat in the bedroom, or you
could create a cocooning space with

These unapologetically fussy finishes are a little bit'extra'. Frills,

they're old fashioned. Brazenly blousy details are all over the

A BIT ABOUT ME
I'm Sophie Hill, 28, an assistant manager
at Urban Outfitters. I live with my partner
Sam, 30, who works in music publishing,
and our daughter, Sienna, two.
WHERE I LIVE
Our home is a three-bed property in
Bromborough, The Wirral, which we
bought in December 2021. You can
follow my Instagram @sophiesgaff.
WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE
The house had been owned by an elderly
couple so was dated, especially the
kitchen, which had beige wood-effect
doors teamed with brown and white
speckled worktops.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
We revamped the kitchen for under £200
and gave the bathroom a mini-makeover
as well. Adding botanical wallpaper and
bringing in vintage rattan furniture, plus
lots of rugs and plants, has made it feel
really homely.
MY FAVOURITE PART
My favourite room is the living and dining
area as it's where we spend the most
time. It's so warm and cosy at night when
the candles are on and it's just a lovely
space to be in.

Feature Karen Wilson Photography Katie Lee
'When I became pregnant, Sam and I didn't fancy
climbing five flights of stairs to reach our rented flat
in Liverpool, so we started looking to rent or buy
elsewhere. We wanted a light and airy three-bed, as I
loved the big windows in our previous Georgian flat.
Sam's mum saw this house in Bromborough, a
village with loads of green space around, but it got
snapped up quickly. It was the ideal location, with a
park nearby, so we were really pleased when it came
back on the market a few weeks later. Although it
was crammed full of furniture, you could tell the
rooms were quite big. I particularly loved the large
south-facing windows in the living room at the back
and the gorgeous garden.
We had thought we could only afford a two-bed
house in a less desirable area, but this was within
budget as it's a shared ownership property. We got
a mortgage for 25% of the value and pay a reduced
rent to a housing association on the rest.
Sienna was born two months before we moved
in and we started decorating room-by-room while I
was on maternity leave. I studied textile design at uni
and love interiors, so I'd already made moodboards
and taken lots of screenshots from Pinterest and
Instagram. I love using pieces from different trends
and eras, especially 1970s furniture and patterns. I
can definitely see us living here for a good few years'

EXPERT ADVICE
Buying a shared
ownership home
Hoping to make the move from renting to home
ownership? Here's how the scheme could help
• Shared ownership schemes allow certain eligible
people to buy a leasehold property that might
otherwise be out of their price range. Many of the
homes are new-builds but there are also older
homes available for re-sale.
• To qualify, you'll need a household income of
under £80,000 (£90,000 in London) and be unable to
afford the deposit and mortgage payments for a
home that meets your needs. Most schemes are
aimed at first-time buyers (as well as older people
and those with disabilities) rather than those moving
up the ladder. You often need to prove you live or
work in the area or have connections to the area too.
• If you qualify, you can buy a share of the property
(usually between 25-75%) with a mortgage or
savings, then pay a reduced rent on the rest to a
house association, council or developer. There may
also be ground rent and an annual service charge.
• For example: buying a 40% share of a £200,000
property would cost £80,000, so you could get a
mortgage for £72,000 with a 10% deposit of £8,000.
Annual rent is typically around 2.75% (capped at 3%)
of the remaining £120,000 share (in this case £3,300,
or £275 per month). There will also be an annual rent
review with terms set out in the lease agreement.
• If you decide to buy a bigger share of your home in
future (known as staircasing) you will pay less rent.
Eventually you may want to purchase the entire
property outright and potentially buy the freehold.
• To find shared ownership properties for sale in
your area, visit gov.uk. You can also search at
sharetobuy.com and newhomesforsale.co.uk.

'We had loads of white, flat-pack IKEA furniture in our
previous flat. I liked it at the time but, looking back, it was
just too clinical. My style has evolved over the years, but I've
always been drawn to 1970s-style designs and I love
West German pottery. The more I got into vintage interiors,
the more I realised how much modern stuff is inspired by
the past. For this space, I'd seen a picture in a magazine of a
1970s tulip table and knew I wanted that style. Eventually,
I found this old IKEA design for £10 on Facebook. It's a bit
scratched on top but looks the part.'

Living room
'We waited a year before decorating our living room.
I really wanted beige walls since I'd already used grey
in Sienna's room and the bathroom, so felt a warm
colour would work in this south-facing space. It's a great
backdrop for my plants to pop against, too. I'm not that
keen on the flooring but it's easy to clean and the large
rug from Rug Love means you can't really see much of
it. The colours really tie the scheme together, but there's
been a lot of trial and error in here and I've switched
furniture around quite a lot, like the Chesterfield that
used to be on the opposite wall. I've also had to get rid
of some furniture I loved because it didn't work in the
space. However, as everything is secondhand I can just
sell it on and buy something new.'

'The kitchen was so dated and in disrepair before, with an ineffective
splashback which only went up 10cm. We fixed all the cabinet doors
that were hanging off and painted them sage green before putting
them back on. I was going to buy new handles but couldn't find any
that fitted the original screw holes, so we sprayed them black instead.
Wrapping the worktops in a light wood-effect vinyl from B&Q has
also made a big difference. It took Sam and I a full evening and the
corners are quite hard to get right, but it was definitely worth it. As
we couldn't afford to re-tile after getting rid of the splashback, we
found these vinyl subway tiles that stick onto the wall as a quick fix. In

1 was keen to add a bit of colour in here as wed never been able
to decorate in our previous rented flat. The white walls were
marked and scruffy so we painted one wall sage green and
freshened up the rest with an off-white stone colour. I wanted
to steer away from grey as it's north-facing at the front, so it
could've felt a bit miserable, and I thought painting the whole
room green would've been too much. We kept the built-in
wardrobes across one wall but I painted the cheap beech doors
in white. Then I brought in lots of rattan furniture that I already
had: the old IKEA bed was £40 on Facebook Marketplace and
the wicker shelving unit was £15 from a car boot sale. I'm happy
to mix old and new, like the B&M rattan wall mirrors
mixed with charity shop ones.'

YOU WILL NEED
• selection of fresh fern leaves
• flower press (or heavy books)
• blotting paper • picture frame
• spray mount • mounting board
• craft knife® ruler
INSTRUCTIONS
1 Gather your leaves ready for
pressing. Flat leaves will achieve
the best results. Ferns are
particularly good for this project,
but oak, ivy, linden, rowan and
plane leaves will also look dramatic
and beautiful when pressed.
2 To begin, place your leaves onto
a piece of blotting paper, making
sure they have enough room
around them to flatten out. You
may need several pieces of paper.
3 Lay another piece of blotting
paper on top and place in the
flower press or under a stack of
heavy books for around five weeks.
Alternatively, you can use an iron
on a low heat setting to press onto
the paper to speed up the process
and create pressed leaves in an
afternoon. If you decide to use an
iron, make sure you don't push
the iron across the paper as it will
damage and tear the leaves. Simply
press and lift the iron across the
paper as many times as needed.
4 Use a craft knife and ruler to cut
a piece of mounting board to fit
your frame.
5 Once they're pressed, carefully
spray the back of the leaves with
a light coat of spray mount and
gently apply them to your chosen
mounting board. Press lightly to
ensure they're firmly adhered.
Place the mounted leaves inside
the picture frame and hang in your
desired position.

A BIT ABOUT ME
I'm Michelle Purcell, 50, an interior
designer (@michelle_purcell_interiors)
and I live with my husband, Steve, 52, a
surveyor, our two children, Lewis, 21, and
Joe, 18, and our three rescue cats.
WHERE I LIVE
Our home is a four-bedroom, 1920s
semi-detached house in Chester and we
moved here in October 2003.
WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE
We saw this as our forever home so I
knew I could take my time to transform
the old-fashioned space into a modern,
welcoming family-friendly home that
could grow with us.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
We extended the kitchen to create a
space big enough for a family dining
table, though that's been replaced with
a sofa for now. We also transformed
the loft into a luxurious boutique-style
bedroom and en-suite, though the
colour scheme and decor have changed
with our taste over the years.
MY FAVOURITE PART
The green sofa by the mural is my
favourite place to chill right now. No
matter what the weather is, I feel like I'm
somewhere tropical.
This house has seen a lot of changes in the 20 years
since we bought it. Initially, it needed so much work
that we decided to wait until we got it to a liveable
state before moving in, as Lewis was just a baby. The
biggest job was extending the tiny galley kitchen
to create a large, open-plan kitchen-diner but, as
we couldn't initially afford a proper roof, we put a
polycarbonate roof on until - four years later - wed
saved enough to finish the job properly.
The loft was already boarded, so we installed
stairs at the same time as the kitchen roof, eventually
extending the space by adding a dormer and large
en-suite to create a luxurious main bedroom. As our
family has grown, the rooms have evolved, both in
use and decor. We recently gave the kitchen a stylish
makeover, installing new cabinets that I painted
black and pink. My home always had pops of colour,
but over the years I've used a more neutral, gentle
scheme, also adding panelling, brick slips, and plenty
of artwork.
I love to save money so, with the help of family,
we've done most of the work ourselves. Looking back
and seeing how far we've come helps me appreciate
all the hard work that's gone into creating our home.
Hopefully, we won't need to change it for a while now,
though I do have plans to update the bathroom and
colour-drench our bedroom, so who knows!'

Kitchen
'When we extended the galley kitchen we installed the cheapest
cabinets that we liked and could afford. After a few years, we replaced
the doors, but over time the kitchen started looking pretty tired. So, we
ripped it all out, keeping the original layout to save money on needing
to move utilities, and, as well as adding more storage, we installed a
bigger island that could seat us all. We went for paintable units from
Howdens because I wanted to choose bespoke colours, plumping
for Off-Black by Farrow & Ball and Kasbah by Paint & Paper Library.
Our wood worktops were a nightmare to maintain so we invested in
Carrera quartz - not the cheapest option, but it's low-maintenance and
I got a good quote. I finished the look by gluing brick slips above the
shelf to add texture then whitewashing them to soften the brick colour.'
ф Michelle chose a kitchen from Howdens, but it didn't come with
fluted glass doors. She explains,'I simply bought reeded plastic film
and stuck it to the inside of the glass doors to get the same look'

Use lighting to zone a multi-purpose
room with these bright ideas
• Get a feel for how you live in the space before
making any lighting purchases, particularly if
you're having lamps wired-in by an electrician. It
can be helpful to note down which areas of the
space you use for which tasks, and the times of
day you most commonly use the room.
• There are three main types of lighting you'll
need to include: ambient, accent and task.
Ambient lighting should illuminate the whole
space, and includes the ceiling fittings, plus
larger light sources such as floor lamps. The clue
is in the name for task lights - these are
focussed light sources to illuminate tasks, such
as reading or cooking. Accent lamps are used to
highlight certain focal points in a room.
• Draw out a floorplan of your open-plan space,
including details such as alcoves and doors,
plus furniture. Mark plug sockets, light fixtures,
switches and fittings too - this will give you an
idea of where you can easily add plug-in lights.
• Once you've got your base floorplan, think
about whether there are any dark corners that
need a boost, or spots that need a softer, more
diffused light - the solution could be as simple
as swapping a shade. Then, you can create the
different'zones'through lighting. For example,
install a low pendant over a dining table, add
angled task lamps over a kitchen worktop and
use wall lights to draw attention to artwork.
'The cabinet was a £40 eBay find and was

'This was initially used as a dining area, but we now eat at the extended
island, so I decided to turn it into a relaxed zone with a bar area and
where the boys can lounge and chat while I'm cooking. When we had the
garden doors replaced, I liked the idea of bringing the outside in, so went
for a tropical-themed mural from WallpaperMural along the back wall. It
was originally grey and white to match the grey vein in the worktops, but
during lockdown I started to colour it in as something to occupy my mind,
so it's also injected a bit of colour to the space and it's a fun piece of decor.'

'This room was originally blocked
off and used as a grown-up space,
but when the boys got older we
knocked it through, zoning the
two areas by using different but
complementary paint colours for
flow. We blocked up the wall to get
a bigger sofa for us all to sit on, but I
didn't want to get rid of the door, so
colour-drenching makes it visually
disappear. We've recently exposed
the original parquet flooring - we
discovered it when we first bought
the house, but at the time it felt like
a big job to make it beautiful again
and we were desperate to move
in, so we initially put carpets down.
We replaced an ugly gas fire with
a black Victorian-style one for £50
from eBay which, even 20 years ago,
still felt like a bargain. It originally
had red tiles at the side, so I painted
the room red to match, but over the
years I've moved to a softer, more
neutral palette and a contemporary
look, and I recently updated the
room by adding panelling.'
g 1 added a dado rail as well as the picture rail when 11
panelled this room - most people either go for a Shaker
style or elegant Parisian architrave but I liked the idea of
mixing and matching both designs'^*

'Our ever-evolving middle room started life as a
building forecourt to store cement bags while
renovating the kitchen! It's also been a playroom, a
gaming room, a TV snug and a dining area, although
now it's currently our music room, where we listen to
records and chill out. We installed the wood burner
and I gave the insert a makeover using my own
stencil, traced from our garden tiles. I felt the large
stretch of wall needed some texture, so this was the
first section of panelling I added, and I personalised
the gallery wall with music-inspired prints.'

my dad even came over to help. We channelled
electricity down to the end of the garden so we can
have plug-in lights and an electric heater on the
wall, which allows us to enjoy the space, even on
chilly days, although we also installed a log burner
which is visually appealing. We placed the structure
on a raised platform to make it feel more like an
outdoor room rather than simply an extension of
the garden. I've styled it with outdoor rugs and an
old IKEA sofa which I spray with Scotchguard at the
start of each summer, to waterproof it.'

'It was only possible to stand up in the middle of this space when we
first moved in, so when we decided to make it our bedroom we built
a box dormer onto the back to include a luxe en-suite bathroom. We
also installed a skylight and Juliet balcony because I wanted light
to stream in from both sides. The walls are still painted the original
colour I used throughout the house when we first moved in, as grey
was incredibly popular back then. It's stood the test of time as it's a
lovely warm colour with an earthy undertone, acting as the perfect
neutral backdrop to the colourful accessories I've added since. At the
moment, I'm styling the room with pink and yellow and light wood
furniture, which works particularly well with the grey palette.'
<- En-suite
'I was inspired to create
this space after staying in
a luxury boutique hotel. I
mentioned my idea to add
a glass wall to the builder,
who achieved the look
by using tough indoor/
outdoor bannister glass,
kept in place with two
brackets. Although the
glass wall and a spa bath
was top of my wish list, I
also made sure the layout
included a privacy element
for the loo, as I didn't want
to look at the toilet from
my bed. I initially went for a
neutral scheme, choosing
large-format grey tiles and a
white suite. If I stripped out
all the colourful accessories,
the room would feel bare,

'This room became my office during lockdown.
I wanted to add panelling, but the space is quite

depth without overpowering the room. I need
lots of storage for my samples and paperwork,
so I installed the IKEA wardrobes to keep
everything ordered and tidy and then upcycled
them to create a unique piece of furniture.
I got some plastic rattan - much cheaper than
real rattan - and stuck it to the glass doors with
carpet glue spray. I also attached foam board
cut into an arch shape, added the beaded strips
to the bottom half, and then painted it Oval

PRETTY PASTEL APARTMENT i
I’M ALWAYS GIVING RENTER-FRIENDLY
decor hacks a go
Interiors influencer Steph Kaluza's new-build is bursting with personality,
thanks to clever DIY tweaks and a dreamy colour palette
Inspiring homes
hmourt и» ин>
The pink velvet Atlas sofa from Next is the
focal point of the living area. Steph has I

A BIT ABOUT ME
I'm Steph Kaluza, 24, a social media
content creator, @ohsorented, and I
live with my boyfriend, Jason, also 24,
a Twitch streamer.
WHERE I LIVE
My home is a one-bedroom new-build
apartment in a 13-storey block in north-
west London, which we moved into in
November 2020.
WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE
It was a typical new-build, with a lot
of white everywhere - white kitchen
units, white walls, white tiles - teamed
with laminate flooring. It needed a big
injection of character.
HOW I MADE IT MY OWN
Buying statement pieces such as my pink
sofa, covering up tiles with stick-on vinyl,
zoning areas, like the dining space, and
adding subtle colour and texture.
MY FAVOURITE PART
It's got to be the living area. It's a lovely,
big space and so light. Although we've
bought the apartment now after renting
it, we're going to keep the walls in here
white, even though we could paint them
if we wanted.
'My boyfriend and I are both from Oxfordshire, but
moved to London for work. I studied digital marketing
then came to work for homeware brand Sass & Belle
and got more and more interested in interiors. I
started off in a flatshare, but after a while we found
this unfurnished new-build property to rent together.
It's part of the government Rent to Buy scheme and
is a lovely light flat with big windows, a cute balcony
and great views over London.
After two years of renting, under the scheme we
were given the opportunity to buy, and we could
choose a percentage rather than pay the full price.
We thought a lot about it, and we weren't sure
because it only has one bedroom, but we decided to
go ahead in December 2022 and buy a large chunk.
My Instagram, @ohsorented, has always been
about making the most of rental properties, and
renter-friendly hacks - but now we've bought, I'm
going to stick with it, rather than change the name.
When we moved in, we had the basic neutral
kitchen, bathroom and flooring, but that was it.
It looks very different now. We weren't allowed to
paint the walls before, and everything was bright
white, but I'm thinking of adding some soft pinks and
greens, particularly to the bathroom and bedroom,
but leaving the open-plan living area white. We love
our apartment and we're in no hurry to move.'

Living area
The living area is lovely and light,
with two huge picture windows and a
balcony. We have floaty curtains for the
windows - we're not really overlooked,
but it makes it feel cosy at night. I like
to zone spaces, and it made sense for
the sofa area to be between the two
windows with a rug and a coffee table.
The sofa was key to the new scheme.
We'd moved with our old green sofa,
but it wasn't quite right. I found this
fabulous large pink velvet sofa and
could immediately tell it would work
in the space. I'm one for subtle colours
rather than huge blocks of bright colour.
I've added in yellows, sage greens, and
pale rust shades to the scheme, as
well as plenty of artwork and unusual
accessories to personalise the space.'

EXPERT ADVICE
'Everyone is surprised when they find out that
my pink tiles are actually tile-effect vinyl. It's
the Twilight Tiles Blush Pink design by
The Loft & Us, which comes as a roll'
How to liven up
your kitchen with
vinyl tiles
If you're renting and can't replace existing tiles, or
just fancy a quick glow-up without the hassle, then
stick-on tiles are a great option
• Make sure you order samples before you make a
decision. The colours can look different online to the real
thing, and there are various matt and gloss finishes,
so you can see what suits your scheme.
• Check if the product you're thinking about is fully
waterproof and heat-resistant. It will be very near the
cooker and the sink, so needs to be hardwearing.
• Stick-on vinyl usually comes on a big roll, so it's handy
to have someone else with you when you apply it. You
can easily do small sections on your own, but the larger
sections can be trickier to put up and you don't want
wrinkles or to lose the stickiness.
• Always buy more than you need - which is also the
case with tiles. If you make a mistake you don't want to
be left with a tiny space and nothing to cover it.
• Be bold with colour. Instead of worrying about going
for something safe if you sell the property, tile-effect
vinyl allows you to be brave as you can always take it off
when you leave.

Dihihg area
Tve created a separate dining area
where we eat most of our meals. I
thought about placing the table and
chairs in a few different spots before
deciding on this layout, but it made
sense to place it next to the right-
hand side of the kitchen, so the
food could just be carried across. It's
by the floor-to-ceiling kitchen unit,
where all the crockery and cutlery
is, so it's quick to lay the table. We
usually just have it set for two, but it
can be easily pulled out and other
chairs added if we have friends over.
It's also next to one of the large
picture windows so it gets plenty
of light. We do have a balcony with
chairs out there, so if the weather's
warm we can just move from one
to the other. To ground the dining
space, I've hung a large print above
the table in some of my favourite
accent colours'

'Because the kitchen is tucked away,
rather than being in the middle of our
living space, it cuts down on cooking smells.
Although we didn't get a choice of units,
I've added in some colour with vinyl tiling,
pastel saucepans and prints on the wall'
Kitchen
'The placement of the kitchen was what first attracted me to this apartment
- in other places we saw, the kitchen and living areas were in one space,
whereas in this one the kitchen is around the corner. There isn't a window,
so it needs careful lighting, but it's like a galley kitchen on its own, and you
don't look straight at it, which makes the apartment feel bigger than if it was
in the same area. The off-white handleless kitchen was already installed - it's
modern, but a bit dull. I've added a fun touch with the pink star vinyl tiling
and a wall of framed prints, as well as plenty of pink and green accessories,
with everything from cookware to tea towels, to make it feel like ours.'

Math bedroom
'It's not huge, but there's room for everything we need. We bought a new bed
with a rattan headboard, and now that I've discovered linen bedding, I'll never
go back. My set in pale pink linen is a great base to layer up with cushions and
throws. I've added some subtle, pared-back green touches as well, because pink
and green is such a good combination. I even found a metal bedside table in
sage, and a plywood storage unit for the end of the bed which add two more
textures to the room. I've also echoed the cane headboard with my radiator cover.
All the covers in the flat were originally from B&Q and I've removed the panels
and replaced them with rattan cane webbing, which looks a lot better.'

• Don't expect everything in a new-build to be perfect. Often there's a gap
between the property being finished and someone moving in. We had a
problem with our toilet, which caused a leak, but it was only discovered
once we were living there. So, be prepared for a few issues to crop up.
• Be very careful when choosing colours for a kitchen without windows.
A lot of images you see online have been edited to appear in natural light,
so won't look the same if your kitchen is internal and lit by LED lights.
• If you're moving into an unfurnished property, don't be in too much of a
rush to buy expensive pieces of furniture. You need to really checkout the
proportions of the pieces and live in the space for a while to make sure
you're making the right decision.

Bathroom
'There wasn't a lot we could do with
the layout of the bathroom, which was
already installed, but the basic white
suite and neutral tiles were fine. As we
were renting for the first two years, we
couldn't paint the walls, but I used a
trick to make it look like we'd added
a wooden side panel to the bath to
give it some character. It's actually a
wood-effect vinyl, but it's very realistic.
I also found a great free-standing
unit, in pink of course, which holds all
of our toiletries. I've added plenty of
accessories and towels in pinks and
yellows, along with a lively bathmat.
Now we own the flat, we've got lots of
plans for the bathroom. We're definitely
going to put a lot more pink in here,
and see if we can paint the floor tiles'

• paper • pencil
INSTRUCTIONS
1 Begin by degreasing the outside of your glasses
using alcohol or soapy water and then leave to air
dry or dry them thoroughly.
2 To create an abstract spotty design on your
tumblers, use a fine artist's paint brush to apply
random blobs of glass paint to the exterior surface
of the glass. Don't be tempted to apply too much
paint at once as it may run. If you want a more
opaque finish, allow the first coat of paint to dry
and then apply a second layer.
3 To create a delicate floral design, begin by
painting simple floral shapes on the outside of the
glass using three different shades of glass paint.
Allow to dry.
4 In between the flower motifs, use a tube of gold
outliner paste to carefully draw a curving stem
leading from the base of each flower. Allow to dry.
5 Using green glass paint and an artist's
paintbrush, draw a simple leaf shape on either side
at the base of the stem and allow to dry.
6 To create a gold rim at the base of the glass,
begin by placing the glass on a sheet of paper and
drawing around the edge with a pencil. Remove
the glass then draw a second circle, 1 cm smaller,
inside the outer circle. Place your glass back on the
paper so the outer edge of the glass base lines up
with the outer pencil circle. Use the inner circle as
your template and carefully follow around this line
using the gold outliner paste. Allow to dry.
7 Place the decorated glasses on a baking
tray in a cold oven and set to 160°C. Once the
temperature reaches 160°C, bake them for 40
minutes. At the end of baking, open the oven and
leave the glasses to cool down inside to prevent
thermal shock. After baking, the glasses should
be dishwasher-safe (following the manufacturer's
recommendations), and resistant to solvents and
common detergents.

LIGHT IT UP
Lighting is a crucial element, so look for solutions in eye-
catching, organic shapes. Domed shades in glossy or matt
finishes and arc details are important to this look and add
a functional, yet stylish, touch.
IT’S IN THE DETAILS
Furniture with sleek lines, practical design features and beautiful
craftsmanship is key. Tapered wooden legs on low level pieces
are characteristic of this design era and can easily work with
existing decor to bring a hint of this style into play.

INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS
Rattan, cane, wicker and bamboo were everywhere in the
1970s, bringing texture, pattern and detail to essential and
decorative items. Cotton macrame wall hangings and leafy
plants, such as easy-going spider plants, add a fresh feel.
PLAY WITH PATTERN
Vibrant florals and statement geometries epitomise this trend.
Go all out with a bold wallpaper or keep walls plain and choose
patterned bed linen, rugs or curtains.
WARM IT UP
Turn up the heat with a colour scheme of rich, warming
shades. Yellows, oranges and browns instantly set the tone
and work brilliantly together in bold flowing patterns on

Revive
your floor
If your floorboards are looking a
little shabby, then painting them can
give them a new look. Before you start
painting, clean them thoroughly using
warm soapy water. Avoid using products
containing harsh chemicals, as these can
prevent some paints and lacquers from
performing properly. Once the floor is
dry, apply the first coat of paint using a
brush or roller. Start by applying paint
with a brush along all the sides and
corners, cutting in a few centimetres.
Then paint the rest of the floor. Start
from the furthest point away from
you and work backwards towards the
door. Depending on the colour you've
chosen, you may need two or three
coats of paint. To add a pattern to your
floor, mask off a geometric design using
painter's tape or use a stencil to create
a more elaborate tiled effect. Apply two
coats of the top coat colour, allowing
it to dry thoroughly between coats.
Once dry, remove the tape or stencil,
then apply two or three of coats of clear
lacquer, allowing it to dry thoroughly
between coats.

them, then cheat the look by covering
them up using self-adhesive tile stickers.
There's a whole host of designs to choose
from, whether you prefer a more heritage

your old tiles are clean and grease-free
before applying the stickers to ensure a

GET PLAYFUL WITH PAINT
When it comes to painting secondhand furniture, don't just stop at using one colour all over. Embrace
your creativity and add a freehand pattern to transform it from drab to fab. Scallop motifs remain
a huge trend this season and they work particularly well layered on top of each other on a chest of
drawers. Lightly sketch out your design on the plain painted surface using pencil, then go over the
design using a fine artist's paintbrush. This project is ideal if you have some leftover paint or tester pots
that you want to use up, as you can also mix and match with your existing colour palette.

Revamp a
tired kitchen
If your kitchen cabinet doors are
looking tired and dated, then you
can breathe new life into them
using self-adhesive film. It's a
lot quicker and less messy than
painting them. Firstly, remove
the doors and handles. Clean the
doors thoroughly with sugar soap
to remove any dirt and grease
and make sure that the surface is
clean and free of debris. Allow to
dry thoroughly. Cut the film to size
(make sure there's extra to wrap
around the edges) then carefully
apply it, gradually peeling off the
backing paper as you go. Press it
firmly into place with a squeegee
as you work to remove bumps. To
achieve neat corners, cut diagonally
into the corner with scissors, fold
one flap around the corner, then the
other. Trim any excess away then
rehang doors and reattach handles!

Murals have been making a big comeback in recent
seasons and they are a perfect project for using
up leftover tins of paint and tester pots. Abstract
and freeform impressionist designs make a huge
impact and are easy to achieve even if you're not an
accomplished artist. Roughly sketch your design onto
the wall in pencil, then use bold brushstrokes to create
your image. If you're not artistically inclined, then stick
to simple colour block murals in geometric shapes,
such as squares, oblongs and triangles, which you can
map out on the wall using masking tape to ensure
crisp, clean edges.

Wood-effect self-adhesive vinyl is often used to transform kitchen doors and worktops, but
it's also perfect for revamping tired cupboards and cabinets, too. It works particularly well on
sideboards, where the large, flat expanse of surface shows off the woodgrain effect to its best
advantage. Ensure the surface of the sideboard is squeaky clean before you start. Cut the vinyl
to size using a craft knife and ruler, then use an old credit card to smooth the vinyl into position,
making sure you push out any air bubbles as you work. .____________________________

Wake up
your walls
Panelled walls have made a huge
comeback over the past few seasons.
They're a great way to add depth to a
plain wall and they're easier than you
might think with a bit of DIY know-how.
Start by marking out the dimensions
you want your panel to be on the wall
using a pencil, spirit level and ruler.
Next, work out how many lengths of
beading you need to cut for each panel.
Cut the lengths of beading to size using
a hack saw or tenon saw. Use a mitre
block to cut the ends into 45° angles.
Once you've cut and angled the four
lengths of beading to form your panel,
attach them to the wall using grab
adhesive. If your walls aren't perfectly
flat, use nails as well as grab adhesive.
Once the adhesive is thoroughly dry,
paint however you like.

QUICK AND EASY
<- HIGHLIGHT FEATURES WITH A POP OF PERSONALITY
A flash of colour around the hidden edge of a door adds an unexpected spark of joy to your space.
It's a low effort and low commitment way to bring colour into rooms - you can just close the door if
you don't want to see it all the time. It's also a fun opportunity to use shades you feel could be too
overwhelming if used over large areas, but you can't help but love (we see you, Barbie Pink fans).
A splash of colour will show off decorative features too: for example, give light fittings a little more
grounding by highlighting their place in your room. Painting a small shape around the spot they're
fitted to will add extra oomph to even the daintiest of wall lights. We'd recommend using a darker
tone to your wall colour here, but this is a great place to try out metallic finishes too.

Ф USE COLOUR BLOCKING TO PULL YOUR
SCHEME TOGETHER
Harmonise all of the elements in your room by painting a colour
block to link them together. The dreamy, greeny-blue in this
scheme is the ideal shade as it mimics the stormy sea evoked by
the boat print which overlaps it, while also complementing the
fresh foliage. As well as being affordable, paint gives you much
more range and flexibility when it comes to using colour in this
way - and it's quick to paint over if you don't get it right the first
time around. Colour-blocking will also inject colour without the
commitment of painting all four walls.

Create intricate patterns with
stencils to transform your home
inside and out. Stencil designer
Nicolette Tabram (nicolettetabram.
co.uk) shares her pro tips
1 Use a water-based paint such as
acrylic, chalk or fabric paint Avoid
oil-based paints or watercolours which
will be too runny. If the stencil moves
when using it, there will be an issue
with smudging. So, I prefer to lightly
coat the back of my stencils with spray
adhesive, but you can also secure the
stencil with low-tack painter's tape.
2 Once the stencil is in position, it's
time to apply the paint. The best tools
for this are a bristle stencil brush, or a
small foam roller. If using a brush, dip
the tip of the bristles into the paint,
removing as much as possible on
the side of the pot. Then, rotate the
brush onto a piece of paper to ensure
the paint is evenly distributed on the
edges of the bristles. If using a foam
roller, remove the excess paint by
rolling onto paper before use.
3 Apply the paint through the holes
on the stencil with the brush, using
the same circular motion you used on
the paper. If using a foam roller, lightly
roll across your stencil to ensure it
doesn't shift.
4 Peel the stencil away carefully to
reveal your design. Don't remove it all
at once - go slowly so that you can
place the stencil back down if you
need to touch up any small parts.
Ф ADD AN ARTISAN FEEL WITH STYLISH STENCILS
Stippling brushes at the ready! Stencils are back from the Nineties to
brighten up dull walls. These straightforward templates are a super
flexible alternative to wallpaper and you can use them to add a little (or
a lot of!) playful pattern. Make it your own by choosing your favourite
colours and experiment with placement in different areas of the room.
One of the joys of stencilling is the slightly imperfect final result. It
plays into the folksy, handmade trend of the last few years and you'll
appreciate knowing you did it yourself.

USE COLOUR TO
ZONE YOUR SPACE
Using different shades to define
areas for specific activities, such as
working, reading or sleeping, can
help your mind to focus on the
task. It's a neat trick in children's
bedrooms, or for breaking up large
open-plan living areas. Apply the
basics of colour psychology
to your paint choices and
select bold tones for a lively,
fun-filled area, or tone things
down with tranquil pastels or
use very deep hues in spaces
designed for relaxation.

CREATE A FOCAL
POINT IN A BEDROOM
A painted circle at the head of
a bed is a gorgeous shape for
creating a relaxing room. The
moon-like feel of this blue circle
softens the scheme and makes
this bedroom a dreamy place to
sleep in. For sunset vibes, opt
for a peach or terracotta shade.
This paint effect also provides
a grounding backdrop for a
shelf of houseplants, books or
accessories. If you're trying
this out at home, consider
matching your bedding to the
shade you've used. We also love
painted circles over beds without
headboards as they help to settle
the bed into the space. For best
results, we recommend using a
wipeable or tough paint to help
prevent any scuff marks and
keep your feature looking fresh.

7 steps to successful
pattern matching
Upgrade your interior design skills and give your home a bespoke finish by
following these simple principles for putting prints together perfectly

to these colours

Sticking to a palette of three colours, using the 60%,
30%, 10% rule, is a useful way to ensure that whatever
patterns you choose - whether stripes, florals, spots or
squiggles - have a coordinated feel rather than fighting
with each other.Try using a statement wallpaper as
a starting point, choosing the dominant colour in its
design for your furniture, paint and curtains. Then select
a secondary shade from the wallpaper and work this
into your scheme with smaller patterned pieces such
as cushions, throws, rugs and artwork. The third colour
is your accent shade and can be used in other soft
furnishings, or smaller accessories like picture frames or
candlesticks, tying the whole look together for pattern
perfection. Of course, you don't need to use wallpaper
as your inspiration - a favourite fabric design or painting
could be the catalyst for your chosen colour palette.

It's always helpful to consider
scale when decorating, and
especially so when bringing lots
of pattern together. To create a
classic look with a twist, choose
a large-scale pattern as the main feature for your room (for
instance, a showstopping wallpaper or curtain fabric), then
complement this with medium-scale and small-scale patterns
of the same nature. It's all about layering - think bedlinen and
pillows in the bedroom, or look for tiles and subtle patterned
worksurfaces if applying this principle in a kitchen.
If your chosen pattern is directional, you can also play
around with the orientation for a more eye-catching effect.
Hang a wide-striped wallpaper horizontally, for example, and
contrast this with narrower vertical stripes on curtains or a
headboard. In this case, it's the stripe that pulls everything
together, allowing you to mix and match different weights
and scales for an eclectic, yet cohesive, look.

For a calming scheme that still has plenty of
visual interest, introduce blocks of solid colour to
break up patterns and give the eye somewhere
to land. Think about where you'd like the focus
to be when you enter the room, and introduce the
pattern here - it could be that you want to frame a
striking window and view, where patterned curtains
will help draw the eye, or perhaps you'd like your
bed to become the centrepiece of your bedoom - a
headboard upholstered in an eyecatching print
would be ideal. The trick is to offset these focal points
with plain walls and other solid areas to give the
pattern space to breath. Aim for a ratio of 60% pattern
to 40% solids. If the balance seems off, try tweaking
the distribution of pattern throughout the space
by moving accessories around or introducing easy
additions like a throw or cushion.

When choosing a theme, a helpful starting point is to decide
what energy you would like to bring into your space. Are you
seeking a restful feel for a bathroom or bedroom, or a more
dynamic energy for a living room or home
office? Use this to guide your choices,
pairing thematically similar patterns
alongside each other for a subtle layered
look. Repeat patterns are known to
be wonderfully relaxing, while nature-
inspired motifs are often used to bring
a calming influence, so a great pattern
match here would be a leafy'stripe'or
trellis design alongside a floral 'dot'design.
Meanwhile, geometric designs lend
themselves to a more energising scheme,

your curtains to your wallpaper has made a bit of
a comeback in interior design of late, and far from
feeling fussy or dated, it actually creates a streamlined,
uncluttered look while still bringing the wow factor. If
you do go for this approach, just

If your style is more minimalist or leans toward the
neutral side of the colour wheel, there are still ways to
bring pattern into your home without going OTT. Look
for natural textures, and materials that have their own
subtle patterns woven into them. Wool or slub linen, for
example, make a more textural choice than plain cotton
for a chair covering or blind, adding a delicate touch of
pattern that's intrinsic to the fabric. Placing cushions of
different textures together on the sofa creates a varied
display of pattern that you can endlessly play around
with to achieve the look you're after. While a large area
rug made from jute or sisal is also a great way to bring

'I never saw myself buying a Shaker-style kitchen
as I prefer more clean-lined, industrial and
handleless designs, but it had to sit comfortably
with the Georgian building and the herringbone
floor. We've compromised by adding more modern
touches like the black handles, tap and wall tiles'
Mi/pp robbed kitbhwv
The old L-shaped kitchen had no island and hardly
any work surface. As the hob, range cooker and
sink took up so much space, we had to use a dining
table for chopping food. The dark oak veneer units
were also sucking light from the room. It got to the
point where every door you opened fell off, so Jack
took great delight in smashing it up!
HolM T it ivorb
We opted for a traditional Shaker look that doesn't
jar with the age of the house, featuring graphic
monochrome tiles. Lots of plants take the edge off
and blur the straight lines. Although we spent more
on quality flooring and worktops, we saved money
by shopping around and sourcing everything for
the kitchen ourselves.
fra/i/oMitb past
It's that sink moment, with the tiles, sink and tap. It
draws your eye from the living room and acts as a
lovely focal point. I was so pleased as I had an image
in my head and it's come out exactly as I envisaged.
After living in a flat with no original features for
20 years, we fell for the Georgian windows and
high ceilings of this apartment across the square.
The upside-down layout, with bedrooms on the
basement floor, means the kitchen has grand proportions with
lots of light. As the decor was super 1990s, we wanted to restore
some style to the place on a really tight budget.
Our first step was ripping up the peeling laminate flooring in
the kitchen and adjoining living room. The floorboards were a
patchwork of different ages so, rather than sand them, we levelled
them with plywood before installing a parquet SPC (stone plastic
composite). It's like wood to touch but warm underfoot, non-slip,
and practical with the dog as it doesn't mark. Although it blew the
budget, it looks fab.
As the room is north-east facing, we knew we'd have to work
hard to maximise the light. We chose a Graphite island teamed
with Cashmere units around the edges, and white quartz
worktops which have a subtle marbling to keep it feeling light.
By using a local kitchen company, AU Kitchens, we saved a lot
compared to the quotes we had from other retailers. The owner
and designer, Fran Harris, listened to every detail, tweaked the
plans several times and came on site again and again. It felt more
collaborative as they were so flexible.
An island for prep, cooking and seating was a top priority as
there wasn't enough room for a breakfast bar and dining table. It
was difficult to gauge the right size but after the carcasses were
fitted, Fran felt we could get away with doubling its size. Each
cupboard has a purpose, so we spent more on internals, which
are often forgotten, like carousels for pans. A larder has electric
sockets and conceals the kettle, toaster and bins, while a coffee
station with half-depth cupboards hides our electricity board.
The only thing that feels missing is an antique element,
so that's next. We bought a haberdashery cabinet for special
glassware and wine, but it doesn't fit so it's in the hall. The
kitchen really suits the age of the building and I'm so glad we
went larger with the island, as it's the sociable centre of the room.

both to create a space that felt like my home.

I love the wallpapers I designed. They bring the

personality, and look really fun!
£ * к /Ш У colourful decor journey began
" i \ /И during lockdown. When we first
I И moved here, the living room was
A ▼ IB painted cream and aqua, and we
decided to use that as the base for our initial scheme.
We chose some complementary wallpaper and
matched our furniture to the look, choosing beige sofas
and wooden cabinets.
But the room always felt bland to me. As we were
spending more time at home during lockdown, Dave
and I felt the space didn't suit us and that it needed an
injection of colour. We began by painting the ceiling
in Blue 10 by Lick - not an easy job but it made a
huge difference, helped by the addition of colourful
accessories like bright cushions and throws. However,
the scheme still wasn't singing to me, and I wanted a
space that felt joyful and happy, so I began researching
wallpaper which I thought would elevate the look.
Then, after failing to be inspired by what I found online,
I decided to create my own designs.
I invested in an iPad, did an online creative computer
course, and began playing around with colours and
patterns. I started with the checkerboard effect in blue
to match the ceiling, and then I moved onto the floral
design on the main wall. The soft pastels were the
perfect backdrop for the bold, rich tones of the velvet
sofas we invested in. Rather than buy new, I began to
slowly add colour to our existing wooden furniture,
using Rust-Oleum paints which are quick and easy
to apply as they don't need a primer. Creating my
colourful home has been a gradual process but I've
learned new skills along the way, and my whole family
now loves this fun space that reflects our happy home!

'When we first moved in, there were a lot of brown
and beige tones in the room, so our wooden piano
originally complemented the scheme, but as I began
adding colour it started to stand out. I saw no reason
why I couldn't simply paint it like I have other pieces
of furniture. I used a satin-finish pre-primed paint in a
cool lilac and although the first coat looked terrible, I
persevered, and I think the finished result is beautiful
and so unique.'

'I believe your home should make you feel joyful, and
using colour is definitely a mood-booster that adds
the feel-good factor to any space. Whether it's simply
adding accessories like candlesticks, and the twin
ceramic dogs that I bought off Facebook Marketplace
for £20 and painted myself, or a full-on colour explosion
on the walls and ceilings, choose shades and tones that
speak to you and your home will soon become your
happy place.'
3 De/riwitiMuswLfr
'I find wallpapering rar easier than painting, especially
with the paste-the-wall products that are available
now, and designing my own not only gave me a
bespoke look, but I've now turned it into a business,'

Q What’s the best way to clean

Nick Ее, product and training manager at Black+Decker has over
10 years'experience working in the power tool industry. He says...
'Cleaning a driveway typically involves removing dirt, stains and debris.
The most suitable cleaning method depends on the type of driveway
surface you have and the nature of any stains. Using a pressure washer
is an effective and efficient way to clean your driveway - simply use
the pressure washer with a detergent designed for your particular
surface and get to cleaning. Before applying any cleaner or solution to
the driveway, I'd recommend testing the pressure settings in a small
inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and to prevent potential
damage to the surface or grout.
For those living in a terraced house with limited water supply to the
front of the house, I recommend trying Black+Decker's 1700W corded
pressure washer as the self-priming feature allows you to use water
from any source, for example a bucket or a pool, so the machine can
be used even without access to a tap.'

Q How do I
get streak-free
windows?
Thomas Goodman, property
and construction expert for
MyJobQuote, has worked in the
industry for over 20 years.
He says... 'There are a few things
you can do to achieve a streak-free
window clean. Firstly, you want
to avoid cleaning your windows
on a particularly sunny day as the
heat from the sun can cause your
cleaning solution to dry too quickly,
causing streaks on the windows.
White vinegar is perfect for
cleaning windows and achieving a
streak-free shine - dilute it in a spray
bottle with distilled water for the
best results.
Before cleaning the window,
you should wipe down the frame
with a damp cloth to remove any
debris or dust that may be lingering.
Spray the glass with your solution
and ensure that you get an even
coverage. Avoid over-spraying as
this can cause drips which can leave
streaks. Use a microfibre cloth and
wipe the glass in one direction,
and use a fresh cloth for each
window pane to prevent dirt from
spreading. Immediately after wiping
the window, use another clean, dry
microfibre cloth to buff the glass dry.
Make sure you do this in the same
direction that you wiped. This will
help to prevent streaks and water
Q Can I fix a rusty gate or should I replace it?
Emma Irving, senior product manager at Rust-Oleum
Europe, has worked in the painting and decorating
industry for 15 years. She says.. .'You can bring rusty
garden gates back to life with a few easy steps and
products. First, remove all rust using a wire brush or by
sanding. Take off any broken parts at this stage too, such
as handles, to replace with new ones. You may also need
to lubricate the hinges so they open and close smoothly.

2 Keep borders tidy by
removing weeds, moss and

* Black olive, shallot

peppers
PREP TIME 10 minutes
COOKING TIME 1 hour 10 minutes
SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
• 4 red peppers, halved lengthways, cored and
deseeded • 150ml extra virgin olive oil
• 150g shallots, peeled, halved lengthways and cut
into slim lengths • 500ml vegetable stock
• 250ml dry white wine • salt
• 350g small tomatoes (optionally on the vine)
• 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
• 70g black olives, pitted and chopped
• 1V2 tbsp sherry vinegar • 8 basil leaves, torn
METHOD
1 Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Put
the pepper halves into the water, cook for 2 minutes,
then drain and make sure all the water is out of the
peppers. Sit the peppers cut-side-up in a large baking
dish so they're nestled together.
2 Preheat the oven to 210°C/l 90°C fan/gas mark 6.
Heat 100ml of the oil in a large saucepan over a low-
medium heat, add the shallots and gently cook until
softening and turning translucent.
3 Pour in the stock and wine, season with salt, add the
vines from the tomatoes (if using), bring to the boil
and then turn down to a low simmer for 10 minutes.
Discard the tomato vines (if using).
4 Sprinkle the garlic among the peppers. Use a
slotted spoon to lift the shallots out of the broth,
and divide those among the peppers too. Divide the
olives between the peppers, then follow with the
sherry vinegar. Tuck in the tomatoes, cutting any up
as needed to help them fit inside the peppers. Season
with salt and pour over the remaining 50ml of oil.
Pour the broth from the saucepan around (not over)
the peppers. Put the dish into the oven and roast for
45 minutes. Tuck the basil leaves around the tomatoes
in the peppers. Serve.
COOK’S TIP Serve with bread to soak up the
delicious broth around the peppers.

• 2 garlic cloves, crushed • salt • 200g cavolo
nero • 5 sprigs thyme, plus extra to serve

2 Return the pan to a medium heat with the oil.
Add the leeks, garlic and a pinch of salt, and sweat

tray. Scatter over the remaining cheese and some
extra thyme and bake for 25 minutes until golden
and bubbling. Stand for 5 minutes before serving.

• Vi tsp mixed spice • 100g butter, plus extra for
greasing • 100g caster sugar • 1 egg yolk
• 1 tbsp lemon zest • 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 50g currants» flour, for dusting
For the topping
• 1 egg white • 2 tbsp caster sugar
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6.
Grease or line a large baking tray.
2 Combine the flour and mixed spice in a mixing bowl
and set aside. Chop the butter into small cubes and
transfer to another mixing bowl. Add the sugar to the
butter and beat until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolk,
lemon zest and lemon juice and beat well.
3 Sieve the flour mix into the bowl and combine. Stir in
the currants and bring together a ball of biscuit dough.
4 Dust the work surface with flour, put the dough in
the middle and sprinkle it with more flour. Roll out the
dough to the thickness of 3-4mm.
5 Cut out 7cm circles from the dough using a round
biscuit cutter or cup, then gently lift onto the prepared
baking tray. Re-roll the off-cuts, until you have 12-16
biscuits. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
6 Remove the baking tray from the oven and brush
the biscuits with egg white. Sprinkle over the caster
sugar then return to the oven for 2-3 minutes.
COOK’S TIP Make these biscuits gluten-free with
gluten-free flour (use a variety that includes xanthan
gum, to stop the dough from being too crumbly).

Interview
We love your new collection with Clarke &
Clarke! How did it come about?
There's something special about connecting with
a team who organically understands your vision.
That's what working with Clarke & Clarke felt like.
We both have a respect for the influential power of
pattern in a space. I love the challenge of finding
fresh ways to use modern design in imaginative
ways. We shared our ambitions, and it was sort of
kismet from there!
Do you have a your favourite design in
the collection?
It's so hard to choose when I love all the designs!
I'll say the Kisumu has a special place in my heart
because so much of it connects me to my time
spent in Kenya working on my other passion:
philanthropy. I have such vivid memories of
experiences I was living and then subsequently
sending photos to the Clarke & Clarke team to be
used as inspiration for the patterning.
Duma is another favourite: I drew inspiration
from a favourite childhood movie. I love it as an
accent fabric. And I could never leave out the
Mombasa mural. It's'tropical'reimagined. The
hand-painted designs are just as lush as the
vegetation in the print. The vibrant-toned pattern
feels like vacation in a wallpaper.
Where did you find inspiration for the range?
I allowed myself to be completely consumed by the
memories and sensations that are so central to the
various locations I frequent. My collection is wholly
inspired by the sights, scenes and sentiments of my
favourite places on earth. You'll notice hues
reminiscent of an Ibizan sunset, landscapes that
resemble that of the Kenyan region, and even
patterns that capture the magic of the iconic Venice
Beach palm tree-lined shores. I hope my collection
brings a global gorgeousness to homes and interior
spaces everywhere.
For anyone new to decorating with colour and
pattern, how do you suggest they get started?
I would tell them to start small. There's no need to
go big and bold and make yourself uncomfortable
in the beginning. Select a pattern that's perhaps a
bit more muted, like Palmyra, a soft palm tree
pattern. Start in a smaller space and throw out all
the rules. Instead, go with what you feel instinctively
drawn to. You won't go wrong!
How do you go about mixing and matching
patterns when designing a space?
My biggest tip is to decide what you want to be the
main feature in the room. If you want a bolder look
on the walls, select a striking wallcovering that
immediately catches the eye, and leave the rest of
your decor and accessories fairly neutral and simple.
Likewise, bolder decor pieces are allowed to shine
when you use a less saturated wallpaper. The
balance is what you're trying to achieve.
How would you use pattern in a small space?
One of my favourite ways to use patterns in a small
space is by creating what I call 'jewel box
bathrooms'. Take your powder room and have
fun with colour and pattern in a major way! These
are the perfect spaces to use patterns because

they don't have to overwhelm the rest of your
home. You can keep everything else neutral if you
want, and still use a bright wallpaper in the
bathroom. It gives your guests something fun to
enjoy when they visit.
What are your tips for using wallpaper and
wallcoverings?
My first tip is to hire a professional! Using wallpaper
can be harder than it seems. The pros make it look
effortless, but that's years of experience you're
seeing. Now, it is possible to do it yourself- just
remember that all floors and ceilings are angled.
Don't line your wallpaper up with the top of the
ceiling. Instead, start from the middle. If not, you'll
end up needing to overlap to keep lines straight. So
trust me and leave yourself a little gap.
Where's home for you?
Home is always near the ocean. My literal home is
Los Angeles, but it's safe to say that Ibiza is my
home away from home.
How have you decorated your own home?
I've decorated my home in my signature design
style: modern, approachable luxury. You'll always
see stunning stone, hints of brass and gold, and
customised features throughout. I design for the life
I live, and that means one-of-a-kind tailored

elements that make life more functional and more
fun, too!
What's your favourite room at home?
My bedroom! It's such a personal space, and I've
taken extra care to add special features that make it
work for my lifestyle - like a closet designed
especially to pack and unpack my suitcases because
I travel so much for work. My bedroom is my
sanctuary, so I keep the colours muted and patterns
subtle. For instance, I'm using the Kalya fabric from
the collection on my headboard. I love an oversized
bed that sort of envelops me and makes me feel
safe. I draw from all my travels to design these
spaces, and they're always that much more
personalised because of it.
What would we find on your bedside table?
You would likely find a bottle of water, face oil, and a
note or artwork from my kids.
What was the last thing that you bought for
your home?
I bought a Moroccan rug. As I'm out and about and
amazing pieces'find me', I'm trying to get back to
being more selective about the items I buy and
bring in to my home. I want less'stuff'in my spaces,
which is a tough one for someone who loves all
things design!
