softer design approach that
prioritises warm metal tones,
matt ȴnishes, calming natural
colours and an earthier elegance has taken
hold. Think brushed bronze or copper
tapware teamed with a matt-ȴnish concrete
or stone basin. The eect is soothing; the
look unpretentious.
“Tapware and hardware in warm-metal
hues with a brushed ȴnish have a beautiful,
tactile nature and add a subtle, elegant
character to a space that you can’t achieve
with more glossy ȴnishes. There’s been a
big shift in the interior design industry, with
people being drawn to ‘quiet luxury’, and I
think warm metals and matt ȴnishes tie into
that desire for understated sophistication,”
says Fiona Gould, House of Rohl stylist.
“Warmer-toned metallic ȴnishes look
stellar in modern and traditional-style
bathrooms,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont
Tiles’ design specialist. “People are enjoying
the laid-back luxury of brushed copper or
brushed gold tapware and teaming them
with non-gloss tiles, bathtubs and more.”
It’s a trend, according to Akea Scott,
Industrie Tapware interior designer, that’s
fuelled by a desire for less fad-ȴxated
bathroom designs that emphasise more
natural – and restful – materials and ȴnishes.
“Homeowners are focused on creating a
look that will endure and remain relevant,
and engenders a sense of relaxation. Lowmaintenance is important, too,” she says.
“When matt ȴnishes emerged, there was
scepticism about whether they would be
more diɝcult to keep clean compared to
gloss or polished ȴnishes. Now we know
they are easy to clean and easier to keep
looking fresh as the surface reȵects little to
no light, thereby hiding any marks. This is
just one of the reasons we are seeing a real
shift from gloss to matt in tiles, basins, baths
and vanity tops, and from polished chrome
to metal-coloured tapware with a brushed
or textured ȴnish.”

LUXE UNIFORMITY
“The trend of warm-metal colours and nongloss ȴnishes extends to other bathroom
ȴttings, including shower hardware and
cabinetry handles. This uniȴed approach to
design creates a cohesive look,” says Paul.
“These ȴnishes, when used throughout a
bathroom, add depth and texture to the
overall design, and contribute to a more
relaxed atmosphere as they soften the visual
impact and create a more organic, tactile feel
within the space. The result is a modern yet
timeless bathroom design that exudes charm
while maintaining a sense of practicality.”
“Carrying the same warm-metal colour
palette across shower sets, cabinetry details
and other features is the resounding trend,”
adds Christie. “These warmer-toned details
create a luxe uniformity. Matt or brushedmetal ȴnishes can then be paired with rustic
or textural tiles like travertine, and they suit
more natural design themes. Those who
love styles like Farmhouse, Mediterranean
or Coastal tend to gravitate towards warm
brushed metallics. To evoke a biophilic
bathroom, stoneware baths, matt concrete
basins and honed tiles can be paired with
brushed copper tapware and accessories.”
A tip for those who want to use the same
colour ȴ ttings and hardware throughout
is to play with textures. Knurling, where a
diamond or mesh-like pattern is rolled into
the surface, adds interest and makes taps
and handles easier to grip. Or you can use
dierent tones to mix things up a little.
“The fact that metal colours are
ȴltering through into all the elements of
the bathroom, such as shower hardware,
drainage, heated towel ladders and
accessories – even mirror frames and lighting
– indicates a manufacturing commitment
from brands. This proves that colour in
bathroom ȴxtures and ȴ ttings is here to
stay for quite some time,” says Kirsty.

BASINS, BATHS AND MORE
The growing preference for matt or lowsheen ȴnishes is eminently evident in the
latest oerings in basins and baths. “One
trend is for matt-ȴnish basins, particularly in
neutral tones like white, grey, pink, green or
black. They bring a sense of sophistication
to the bathroom and complement a variety
of design styles, from modern to minimalist,”
says Paul. “Matt-ȴnish bathtubs, especially
in subtle shades like taupe, grey or charcoal,
are also gaining attention. They create a
luxurious and inviting focal point.”
It’s a trend that can also be seen in vanity
tops, such as those made of natural or
engineered stone … even custom concrete.
“These are being increasingly favoured for
their tactile appeal. Matt ȴnishes can help
minimise the appearance of water spots and

means ensuring any embedded elements such as tiles,
vanities, tapware, tubs and basins are sourced and
speciȴed in advance. To ȴnd potential items, check
out reclamation yards, salvage warehouses and online
platforms such as Facebook Marketplace. And don’t
forget to think outside the box; just because an item
wasn’t originally intended for bathroom use doesn’t
mean it can’t be repurposed. A mid-century sideboard
may be overlaid with stone to form a one-of-a-kind
vanity. Salvaged ȵagstone ȵoor tiles can become a
shower stall feature wall. Perhaps, more ambitiously,
something like a primitive farmhouse feed trough or
antique laundry soaking tub can make for an amazing
statement piece in a modern bathroom. The key when
incorporating quite rustic items is to balance them
with a simple and clean overall aesthetic, or elevate
them with the inclusion of more contemporary and
sophisticated elements.
If you’re looking to impart reclaimed charm into
an existing bathroom, there are plenty of ways to
add upcycled items. Textiles, like Persian ȵoor rugs
or vintage fabric used as shower or window curtains,
can have a huge impact. Not only do textiles work
to soften what is traditionally a very “hard” surfaced
space, they can introduce colour, pattern and texture.

Likewise, vintage wall art or heritage wallpaper can
work to elevate a bathroom. Another aspect which can
have a distinct inȵuence is lighting. Whether it’s a bold
statement pendant or a pair of delicate wall sconces,
you can look to incorporate second-hand pieces to
provide a unique edge. The same can be said about
hardware. Switching generic cabinet knobs or pulls
with something antique or vintage can be completely
transformative, as can the introduction of reclaimed
towel hooks or bars and so on. And never forget about
the power of general furniture and decor. Where space
allows, free-standing furniture such as cabinets, shelves
or stools can oer character infused with function, and
decor always works to bolster personality.
Being central in the design for many bathrooms,
mirrors also provide a perfect avenue to incorporate
something pre-loved. There are endless beautiful old
mirrors which will give your bathroom an instant boost,
but even a basic mirror can be easily upcycled with a
lick of paint to provide a bespoke feel. The options are
almost endless and only limited by your imagination!

EXPERT ADVICE
Designing a new bathroom can be an overwhelming
experience. You’ll need to make many decisions between
budgeting and building, and careful planning is essential.
The Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi) has
written the rule book on bathroom design.
words selina zwolsman, KBDi
Below you’ll find KBDi’s five top tips for creating a beautiful bathroom space.
1. BE REAL WITH
YOUR BUDGET
2. CREATE A
LIVEABLE LAYOUT
3. PRIORITISE VENTILATION
AND LIGHTING
While the space is often small, the
costs can be high in a new bathroom
build. Budgets typically range between
$10,000 and $40,000 (the average
renovation costs around $26,000), and
there are many variables to consider.
With the room being a wet area (ie.
there’s water splashing around),
you won’t want to compromise on
waterprooȴng or ȴ t-for-purpose
materials. And if your bathroom will be
used every day – likely for a very long
time – you’ll want to invest in highquality ȴ xtures and ȴ ttings.
Real estate experts say an
aesthetically on-point bathroom can
add thousands of dollars in value, so
ensuring your bathroom is visually
impressive is important too. A skilled
designer and reputable bathroom
builder will help you be real with your
budget without compromising where it
matters most.
In 2022, the National Construction Code
(NCC) introduced new requirements
related to “liveable housing”. The new
rules apply to both houses, townhouses
and individual apartments, and following
a transition period, were ultimately
adopted in most States and Territories
in October 2023.
The revisions implement features based
on the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines
silver standard. The changes ensure that
housing is designed to meet the needs of
the community, including older people and
those with mobility limitations. In short, a
Eɝcient ventilation and thoughtful
lighting are crucial for creating a
comfortable and functional bathroom
environment. Install a quality ventilation
system (externally ducted exhaust
fan) and openable windows to control
humidity levels and prevent mould
and mildew growth. When lighting
your space, incorporate a combination
of ambient, task and accent lighting
to enhance visibility and create a
welcoming atmosphere.
Interior designers and lighting
design experts will show you how to
successfully layer all three types of light.
They’ll also know about the Australian
Standard applicable to lighting and
power in bathrooms and help you make
the right (compliant) decision.

liveable bathroom design will allow for:
x Ease of movement within the home
(ie. through internal doors
and corridors)
x Ease of movement using a toilet
x Ease of access to and movement
within a shower
x The ability to add supports like grab
rails (through the reinforcement of
bathroom and toilet walls)
Ask your designer about how you can
make your bathroom liveable for you and
your family now and in the future.

4. SEEK OUT SUITABLE
STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Well-considered storage solutions will help
you keep your bathroom organised and
clutter-free. Assess your storage needs
for toiletries, towels, cleaning supplies and
other bathroom essentials and consider the
functional storage philosophy. Functional
storage is centred around:
1. Storage at the ȴrst or last place of use (eg.
a towel must be easily accessible from the
shower or bath).
2. Visibility of supplies (eg. storing toiletries
one row deep on narrow shelving allows
all items to be easily identiȴed).
3. Ease of accessibility to items (eg.
frequently accessed items should be
stored within easy reach between eye
level and hip level).
A skilled designer will consider the
speciȴc storage needs of your bathroom
and develop functional solutions for you
and your family.
5. FIND FIT-FORPURPOSE FINISHES
Bathrooms are classiȴed as “wet areas”
for obvious reasons, and it’s critical that
you select materials and ȴnishes that will
hold up to the potential exposure to water,
steam and condensation. Wet tiles can be
slippery, so ȴnd a ȵoor tile with a certain
level of slip resistance.
Keep in mind that ultra-grippy tiles can
create problems, too, and cause all kinds of
cleaning headaches. A magniȴcent mosaic
may win your heart in the tile shop, but
a poor application (ie. shonky tiling) or
excessive amount of grout in a hard-toclean area could cause you grief. Matt black
tapware may be high on your wish list, but
cheap and nasty knocko s will cost you
more money down the track.
A bathroom design professional can oer
invaluable guidance in selecting suitable
materials and ȴnishes. Your investment in
their advice will yield the best return and a
beautiful bathroom.

This project was a hands-down bathroom favourite for
the 2023 KBDi Design Awards judging panel. The organic
curves implemented throughout the space eliminate hard

the empty-nester clients. The careful selection of finishes makes
the bathroom easy to clean, too. A solid surface ledge wraps
around the space, gently rolling into a stylish, seamless vanity top
with an integrated basin. The walls are fi nished with Venetian
plaster, and large-format tiles on the floor mean grout is at an
absolute minimum. A combination of wall lights, recessed LED
strip lighting and downlights allow the bathroom to be dimly lit
for a moody vibe, or be bright and clear when required.

The homeowners requested a complete bathroom

The homeowners asked that the wall separating the

Wanting a contemporary overhaul to their dated ensuite
bathroom, the homeowners contacted Bathrooms by
Oldham. Their wish list included a double shower, a
bath, a vanity with plenty of storage, and a smart toilet.
Though the bathroom you see here looks eortlessly
beautiful, navigating the renovation was complex at
times. The plumbing in particular was challenging – the
apartment is on the third ȵoor of the complex, and the
homeowners did not want to disturb the apartment
below to access the plumbing in their ceiling, so the
design team had to plan the reno carefully around this.
Ultimately, false walls were used, allowing the team
to run the plumbing to where it needed to go and
incorporate large niches. This facilitated the double
walk-in shower, bath and smart toilet that are central
to this bathroom’s timeless luxe aesthetic.
The bathroom’s highlighted marble concave ȵuted
wall adds depth, height and texture to the space,
undoubtedly increasing its wow factor appeal. A sensory

niches, under the vanity and shaving cabinet, evoking

in brushed satin.
Adding a touch of warmth to the material palette
is a tall storage cabinet crafted in solid timber by Jon
Robinson. Encompassing some drawers, ȵat-panel doors
and an open shelf, the richly hued joinery provides a
warm richness alongside a healthy amount of storage.
Inviting natural light into the room, a large rectangular
picture window graces the shower, mirroring the frosted
glass panel in the door leading to the hallway.
Both bespoke and timeless, this sophisticated
bathroom is all about comfort and quality.

when renovating your powder
room! Renovating this
space brings a unique set of challenges; it’s
often the smallest room in the home, so it
requires expert design knowledge and the
ability to execute a quality build to ensure a
fabulous end result. Brindabella Bathrooms
specialises in powder room designs and
renovations that not only look amazing, but
are highly functional, with unique touches
that are often surprising yet work brilliantly.
Most bathroom renovators will
automatically recommend a full wall of tiles
for your powder room and, while that can
work in some circumstances, Brindabella
Bathrooms applies its specialist knowledge
to utilise a range of surface solutions that
you may not have considered.
01 Tiles don’t always have to be ceramic.
In this example, Brindabella Bathrooms
used tiles made from 100-year-old
reclaimed hardwood from decommissioned
boats. This has created a strong
visual aesthetic and has provided an
environmentally friendly and sustainable
solution for the owners.
BATHROOM IDEAS 107

02
02 Venetian plaster has been used in place of tiles in this example.
Venetian plaster is an eco-friendly product created by a unique blend
of slaked lime, marble dust and natural pigments, meticulously layered
and polished to create a smooth, luminous surface. These products
are easily accessible and sustainable, making Venetian plaster an
a ordable option for many homeowners. The ȴ nish not only mimics
the look of classic Italian architecture, but also reȵ ects light in a way
that enhances the ambience of the room. In a bathroom setting, the
plaster’s inherent water resistance makes it an ideal choice, ensuring
durability and longevity.
03 Another great option is wainscoting, a decorative wall treatment, as
seen in this example. Wainscoting not only adds a touch of sophistication
to your bathroom, but also introduces a sense of classic architectural
elegance. This functional element ensures durability while eortlessly
enhancing the overall design scheme.

experiencing a resurgence of popularity and, particularly
when applied in a powder room environment, can be
incredibly visually eective, creating atmosphere and

T
here is design, and then there is good design
– driven by innovation, genuine human insight,
and consideration for the impact the product
will have both on the lives of its users and the
environment overall. In the world of architecture and
design, there hasn’t been a visual symbol that would be
more emblematic of these qualities than the now iconic
Good Design Tick. Awarded annually since 1958 as
part of the prestigious Australian Good Design Awards
program, the symbol has been synonymous with design
excellence for over six decades now, rewarding bold
thinkers, tinkers and creators who aspire to create
better products, better experiences and a better
future in Australia and globally.
On Friday 8 September 2023, in the company of
more than 1000 esteemed guests from the industry,
Stormtech was announced as one of the winners of
this year’s awards. A passionate family enterprise
turned leader in the ȴeld of high-quality drainage, today
Stormtech is the architect and designer’s favourite and
its latest product, Wave Grate, further exempliȴes why
the brand has become the industry’s go-to.
The pioneering product, designed by Stormtech’s
Troy Creighton and Peter Tucker, was recognised for
its remarkable, innovative and unique quality and
scored the distinguished Good Design Award Winner
accolade in the Product Design category. “The Wave
Grate is a stylish and functional product that has clearly
incorporated a new approach to manufacturing and
design,” the statement from the jury reads. “Achieving
a patented design is highly commendable and a clear
reȵection of its innovation. Well done on a beautiful
and seamlessly integrated design!”
Designed and manufactured in Australia, with
Australian-sourced and -processed aluminium, the
Wave Grate’s beautiful design cleverly conceals drainage
channels for a perfect integration. The product fuses
exquisite functionality with a stunning, pared-back
and unpretentious form – a clear expression of the
brand’s DNA, which, Stormtech managing director,
Troy Creighton, remarks, doesn’t include half-measures.
126 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU
PRODUCT
“What we’ve learnt over the last three decades is
that the design needs to be as simple as possible, yet
provide multiple beneȴ ts to dierent stakeholders,”
explains Troy. His desire to ensure the product didn’t
compromise on the quality, functionality, sustainability
proȴle, nor the aesthetics meant Wave Grate was
developed based on decades of experience and
designer and customer feedback. It is quite clear that
this commendable dedication to design excellence and
unwavering commitment to innovation have paved
Wave Grate’s way to the accolade in the Product
Design category.
“The award represents the culmination of a project
Stormtech put together in response to feedback from
designers, installers and end users,” Troy remarks on
the win. “This culmination was satisfying in and of itself
as the quality and aesthetic are self-evident. However,
recognition from the Australian design community in
such a way is a massive compliment to our design and
engineering prowess as a team.”
“To be recognised with an Australian Good Design
Award tells the world this project not only represents
design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria
for design innovation and design impact,” says Dr.
Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and
Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards. “The
award is an independent endorsement of professional
design quality.”
