Think brushed bronze or copper tapware teamed with a matt-ȴnish concrete or stone basin. The e΍ect is soothing; the look unpretentious. “Tapware and hardware in warm-metal hues with a brushed ȴnish have a beautiful, tactile nature and add a subtle, elegant character to a space that you can’t achieve with more glossy ȴnishes. There’s been a big shift in the interior design industry, with people being drawn to ‘quiet luxury’, and I think warm metals and matt ȴnishes tie into that desire for understated sophistication,” says Fiona Gould, House of Rohl stylist. “Warmer-toned metallic ȴnishes look stellar in modern and traditional-style bathrooms,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont Tiles’ design specialist. “People are enjoying the laid-back luxury of brushed copper or brushed gold tapware and teaming them with non-gloss tiles, bathtubs and more.” It’s a trend, according to Akea Scott, Industrie Tapware interior designer, that’s fuelled by a desire for less fad-ȴxated bathroom designs that emphasise more natural – and restful – materials and ȴnishes. “Homeowners are focused on creating a look that will endure and remain relevant, and engenders a sense of relaxation. Lowmaintenance is important, too,” she says. “When matt ȴnishes emerged, there was scepticism about whether they would be more diɝcult to keep clean compared to gloss or polished ȴnishes. Now we know they are easy to clean and easier to keep looking fresh as the surface reȵects little to no light, thereby hiding any marks. This is just one of the reasons we are seeing a real shift from gloss to matt in tiles, basins, baths and vanity tops, and from polished chrome to metal-coloured tapware with a brushed or textured ȴnish.” BATHROOM IDEAS 41

This uniȴed approach to design creates a cohesive look,” says Paul. “These ȴnishes, when used throughout a bathroom, add depth and texture to the overall design, and contribute to a more relaxed atmosphere as they soften the visual impact and create a more organic, tactile feel within the space. The result is a modern yet timeless bathroom design that exudes charm while maintaining a sense of practicality.” “Carrying the same warm-metal colour palette across shower sets, cabinetry details and other features is the resounding trend,” adds Christie. “These warmer-toned details create a luxe uniformity. Matt or brushedmetal ȴnishes can then be paired with rustic or textural tiles like travertine, and they suit more natural design themes. Those who love styles like Farmhouse, Mediterranean or Coastal tend to gravitate towards warm brushed metallics. To evoke a biophilic bathroom, stoneware baths, matt concrete basins and honed tiles can be paired with brushed copper tapware and accessories.” A tip for those who want to use the same colour ȴ ttings and hardware throughout is to play with textures. Knurling, where a diamond or mesh-like pattern is rolled into the surface, adds interest and makes taps and handles easier to grip. Or you can use di΍erent tones to mix things up a little. “The fact that metal colours are ȴltering through into all the elements of the bathroom, such as shower hardware, drainage, heated towel ladders and accessories – even mirror frames and lighting – indicates a manufacturing commitment from brands. This proves that colour in bathroom ȴxtures and ȴ ttings is here to stay for quite some time,” says Kirsty. 44 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU

When done right, their inclusion o΍ers a level of tailored charm you simply can’t replicate with brand new alternatives. Far from being a merely cheap or “make-do” solution, including pre-loved elements is often a very deliberate one, intended to beautifully bridge a gap between luxury and sustainable design – a movement gaining traction as we all become more aware of our impact on the earth. A bonus is the fact that second-hand goods may often be obtained inexpensively, however there are also quite scarce and more sought-after items that attract a premium price. A mid-century sideboard may be overlaid with stone to form a one-of-a-kind vanity. Salvaged ȵagstone ȵoor tiles can become a shower stall feature wall. Perhaps, more ambitiously, something like a primitive farmhouse feed trough or antique laundry soaking tub can make for an amazing statement piece in a modern bathroom. The key when incorporating quite rustic items is to balance them with a simple and clean overall aesthetic, or elevate them with the inclusion of more contemporary and sophisticated elements. If you’re looking to impart reclaimed charm into an existing bathroom, there are plenty of ways to add upcycled items. Textiles, like Persian ȵoor rugs or vintage fabric used as shower or window curtains, can have a huge impact. Assess your storage needs for toiletries, towels, cleaning supplies and other bathroom essentials and consider the functional storage philosophy. Functional storage is centred around: 1. Storage at the ȴrst or last place of use (eg. a towel must be easily accessible from the shower or bath). 2. Visibility of supplies (eg. storing toiletries one row deep on narrow shelving allows all items to be easily identiȴed). 3. Ease of accessibility to items (eg. frequently accessed items should be stored within easy reach between eye level and hip level). A skilled designer will consider the speciȴc storage needs of your bathroom and develop functional solutions for you and your family. 5. FIND FIT-FORPURPOSE FINISHES Bathrooms are classiȴed as “wet areas” for obvious reasons, and it’s critical that you select materials and ȴnishes that will hold up to the potential exposure to water, steam and condensation. Wet tiles can be slippery, so ȴnd a ȵoor tile with a certain level of slip resistance. Keep in mind that ultra-grippy tiles can create problems, too, and cause all kinds of cleaning headaches. A magniȴcent mosaic may win your heart in the tile shop, but a poor application (ie. shonky tiling) or excessive amount of grout in a hard-toclean area could cause you grief. Matt black tapware may be high on your wish list, but cheap and nasty knocko΍ s will cost you more money down the track. A bathroom design professional can o΍er invaluable guidance in selecting suitable materials and ȴnishes. Your investment in their advice will yield the best return and a beautiful bathroom. 74 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU FIVE O F O UR FAVOURITE BATHROOMS Kitchen Capital KBDI WA BATHROOM DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2023 1 Designer Caitlin McNeill of Kitchen Capital was charged with creating an easy-to-clean bathroom for her clients, and she delivered. With clever space planning, Caitlin created a screen-free walk-in shower zone with large-format tiles and minimal grout lines. An in-shower shelf is the perfect place for toiletries, and a newly installed window brings natural light into the space. A large double vanity provides ample storage space in easily accessible drawers, and mirrored cabinets above tick the boxes for functional, eye-level storage.
EXPERT ADVICE 02 AM Interior Studio KBDI QUEENSLAND BATHROOM DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2023 03 2 This stunning master suite earned Queensland designer Ashley Maddison the state title of KBDi Qld Bathroom Designer of the Year in 2023. The ensuite was designed and detailed to an extraordinary level and is certainly made for two. Dual showers and vanities are symmetrically placed to perfection, and the storage solutions are outstanding. The designer has used the functional storage philosophy to allow for all kinds of access. From the in-shower niche to the ample drawers and cabinets to the dedicated make-up zone and fully decked-out robe, this master suite is an excellent example of a well-planned bathroom design. GIA Renovations KBDI VICTORIAN BATHROOM DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2023 3 Natural light bathes this beautiful bathroom designed by Carmel Wylie of GIA Renovations. The 1.6m-diameter window is the superstar of the space and was central to all the design decisions. The new window brings abundant natural light to the previously dark and gloomy space and opens up an always-changing view. The designer cleverly replicated the shape throughout the bathroom, with an impressive circular mirror backlit with LED lighting, disk-shaped wall lights, and round tapware and robe hooks. With large-format floor tiles and Venetian plastered walls, grout is limited and cleaning is a breeze. BATHROOM IDEAS 75
EXPERT ADVICE 04 05 Birdblack Design KBDI AUSTRALIAN BATHROOM DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2023 4 This project was a hands-down bathroom favourite for the 2023 KBDi Design Awards judging panel. The organic curves implemented throughout the space eliminate hard edges and hip bruises, making it a safe and comfortable space for the empty-nester clients. The careful selection of finishes makes the bathroom easy to clean, too. A solid surface ledge wraps around the space, gently rolling into a stylish, seamless vanity top with an integrated basin. The walls are fi nished with Venetian plaster, and large-format tiles on the floor mean grout is at an absolute minimum. A combination of wall lights, recessed LED strip lighting and downlights allow the bathroom to be dimly lit for a moody vibe, or be bright and clear when required. Britt White Studio KBDI VICTORIAN HIGHLY COMMENDED BATHROOM DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2023 5 This chalet bathroom was built on a budget, but no corners were cut on character and charm. Designer Britt Howard cleverly selected long-lasting fi nishes that complement the building’s heritage and will stand the test of time. Terrazzo-look porcelain tiles offer a practical and hardwearing floor fi nish, while glossy green wall tiles help to bounce light around the relatively small space. Storage is proportionate to the overall size of the room and easily accessible to the holidaymakers. The bathroom is as practical as it is pretty. 76 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU

COASTAL CA LM build design rashi mathur (impala kitchens & bathrooms) build impala kitchens & bathrooms photography archetype photo The homeowners requested a complete bathroom overhaul when they ȴrst contacted Impala Kitchens & Bathrooms. The home originally had a separate toilet and bathroom, divided by a wall. Both rooms had no natural light and a dated colour scheme. The homeowners asked that the wall separating the two rooms be removed as part of the reno to open up the space. Although this was done skilfully, the newly created room was still quite long and narrow. Consequently, the team at Impala designed multiple layout options, each carefully considering the functionality of every inch of available ȵoorspace to ensure the homeowners got the most out of their renovation. After considering the numerous layouts, one that included a basin, shower, bath, toilet, and plenty of storage was chosen. 84 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU

PROJECT DESIGN RESPONSE objective To open up the existing bathroom and renovate it to reflect a modern, coastal-inspired style solution The team removed the wall dividing the bathroom and toilet to open up the space and selected fittings, fixtures, surfaces and hues that aligned with the homeowners’ request for a coastal feel As the home is fortunate enough to have coastal views, the design team selected the bathroom’s surfaces and colour palette with a coastal aesthetic in mind. The homeowners chose a large concrete-look tile for the ȵoors and wall – a perfect backdrop for the bath, basin and mirrors. The timber vanity exudes warmth, while the Superior White marble benchtop facilitates modern style beautifully. When the homeowners met with Rosemount Kitchens, they were very keen on renovating their apartment’s main bathroom, which had not had an upgrade since it was built. They were after a bathroom that would exude a spa-like feel, a luxurious sanctuary they could enjoy in the comfort of their own home. Of course, renovating rooms within a highrise apartment building is not without its unique challenges. Luckily, the team at Rosemount Kitchens are very experienced at completing challenging projects like this. They were able to work with the existing plumbing and ducting system, as well as the original footprint, to create a modern bathroom that meets the homeowners’ brief. 88 COMPLETEHOME.COM DESIGN RESPONSE objective To give the tired original apartment bathroom a modern, luxurious update worthy of a high-end spa solution The team used the existing plumbing, ducting and footprint to reimagine the room with the help of striking surfaces, premium fi xtures and considered mood lighting

The homeowners chose the large-format terrazzo-look porcelain tile from San Marco Ceramics for the luxe appeal. The Brodware brushed Nordic brass ȴxtures juxtapose the tiles beautifully, while keeping with the luxe theme. LED strip lighting is featured in the bath niche and shower shelves, as well as under the glass mirror cabinets and as a wall sconce, creating mood lighting worthy of a hotel spa. The bathroom’s highlighted marble concave fluted wall adds depth, height and texture to the space Wanting a contemporary overhaul to their dated ensuite bathroom, the homeowners contacted Bathrooms by Oldham. Their wish list included a double shower, a bath, a vanity with plenty of storage, and a smart toilet. Though the bathroom you see here looks e΍ortlessly beautiful, navigating the renovation was complex at times. The plumbing in particular was challenging – the apartment is on the third ȵoor of the complex, and the homeowners did not want to disturb the apartment below to access the plumbing in their ceiling, so the design team had to plan the reno carefully around this. Ultimately, false walls were used, allowing the team to run the plumbing to where it needed to go and incorporate large niches. This facilitated the double walk-in shower, bath and smart toilet that are central to this bathroom’s timeless luxe aesthetic. The bathroom’s highlighted marble concave ȵuted wall adds depth, height and texture to the space, undoubtedly increasing its wow factor appeal. A sensory dimension has been created with soft strip lighting in niches, under the vanity and shaving cabinet, evoking a sense of tranquillity and reȴned elegance. PRODUCT P OW DE R ROOM S PECI AL IST S W hy be traditional? Be di΍erent and exciting 01 when renovating your powder room! Renovating this space brings a unique set of challenges; it’s often the smallest room in the home, so it requires expert design knowledge and the ability to execute a quality build to ensure a fabulous end result. Brindabella Bathrooms specialises in powder room designs and renovations that not only look amazing, but are highly functional, with unique touches that are often surprising yet work brilliantly. Most bathroom renovators will automatically recommend a full wall of tiles for your powder room and, while that can work in some circumstances, Brindabella Bathrooms applies its specialist knowledge to utilise a range of surface solutions that you may not have considered. 01 Tiles don’t always have to be ceramic. In this example, Brindabella Bathrooms used tiles made from 100-year-old reclaimed hardwood from decommissioned boats. This has created a strong visual aesthetic and has provided an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution for the owners. BATHROOM IDEAS 107
03 02 02 Venetian plaster has been used in place of tiles in this example. Venetian plaster is an eco-friendly product created by a unique blend of slaked lime, marble dust and natural pigments, meticulously layered and polished to create a smooth, luminous surface. These products are easily accessible and sustainable, making Venetian plaster an a΍ ordable option for many homeowners. The ȴ nish not only mimics the look of classic Italian architecture, but also reȵ ects light in a way that enhances the ambience of the room. In a bathroom setting, the plaster’s inherent water resistance makes it an ideal choice, ensuring durability and longevity. 03 Another great option is wainscoting, a decorative wall treatment, as seen in this example. Wainscoting not only adds a touch of sophistication to your bathroom, but also introduces a sense of classic architectural elegance. This functional element ensures durability while e΍ortlessly enhancing the overall design scheme. 108 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU

STO RM TECH MAKE S WAVE S AT AUST R AL IAN GO OD D E SIGN AWARD S T here is design, and then there is good design – driven by innovation, genuine human insight, and consideration for the impact the product will have both on the lives of its users and the environment overall. In the world of architecture and design, there hasn’t been a visual symbol that would be more emblematic of these qualities than the now iconic Good Design Tick. Awarded annually since 1958 as part of the prestigious Australian Good Design Awards program, the symbol has been synonymous with design excellence for over six decades now, rewarding bold thinkers, tinkers and creators who aspire to create better products, better experiences and a better future in Australia and globally. On Friday 8 September 2023, in the company of more than 1000 esteemed guests from the industry, Stormtech was announced as one of the winners of this year’s awards. A passionate family enterprise turned leader in the ȴeld of high-quality drainage, today Stormtech is the architect and designer’s favourite and its latest product, Wave Grate, further exempliȴes why the brand has become the industry’s go-to. The pioneering product, designed by Stormtech’s Troy Creighton and Peter Tucker, was recognised for its remarkable, innovative and unique quality and scored the distinguished Good Design Award Winner accolade in the Product Design category. “The Wave Grate is a stylish and functional product that has clearly incorporated a new approach to manufacturing and design,” the statement from the jury reads. “Achieving a patented design is highly commendable and a clear reȵection of its innovation. Well done on a beautiful and seamlessly integrated design!” Designed and manufactured in Australia, with Australian-sourced and -processed aluminium, the Wave Grate’s beautiful design cleverly conceals drainage channels for a perfect integration. The product fuses exquisite functionality with a stunning, pared-back and unpretentious form – a clear expression of the brand’s DNA, which, Stormtech managing director, Troy Creighton, remarks, doesn’t include half-measures. 126 COMPLETEHOME.COM.AU
PRODUCT “What we’ve learnt over the last three decades is that the design needs to be as simple as possible, yet provide multiple beneȴ ts to di΍erent stakeholders,” explains Troy. His desire to ensure the product didn’t compromise on the quality, functionality, sustainability proȴle, nor the aesthetics meant Wave Grate was developed based on decades of experience and designer and customer feedback. It is quite clear that this commendable dedication to design excellence and unwavering commitment to innovation have paved Wave Grate’s way to the accolade in the Product Design category. “The award represents the culmination of a project Stormtech put together in response to feedback from designers, installers and end users,” Troy remarks on the win. “This culmination was satisfying in and of itself as the quality and aesthetic are self-evident. However, recognition from the Australian design community in such a way is a massive compliment to our design and engineering prowess as a team.” “To be recognised with an Australian Good Design Award tells the world this project not only represents design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria for design innovation and design impact,” says Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards. “The award is an independent endorsement of professional design quality.” STORMTECH stormtech.com.au P 1300 653 403 E info@stormtech.com.au F @stormtechdrains I @stormtechdrains BATHROOM IDEAS 127
