“For modern and unique lightingrTsnop on
Etsy. I use sconces from the Etsy shop
Sputniklights in my home and my work, as
they fit in with modern and cont^rnporaij
decor—especially in the bedroomM ,';
“I look for heavy
sateen fitted and
flat sheets at
HomeGoods, then
have them mono-
grammed. I’ll take any
brand, but they often
have little-known
Italian companies and
discontinued lines
that are great quality.”
—Hillary Taylor

"On my patio in San
Francisco I have two
evil eye round-
tufted pillows from
Cost Plus World
Market that are so
much more elevated
than their price tags
suggest. I’ve found
some of my favorite
outdoor decor there.”
—Noz N ozawa

“Never underestimate the power of the dollar
at Big Lots. You can find almost any kind of
home accessory for a fraction of the cost.
I recently purchased outdoor market lights
with glass lightbulbs for my backyard patio.
The quality is great and they look high-end.”
—Kenzie Leon Perry @ze_haus
“I love a colorful
Acapulco chair from
Bed Bath & Beyond
(relaunched and rebranded
by Overstock). It is a great
source for stylish, inexpen-
sive outdoor furniture like
chairs, mesh loungers, and
ceramic stools.”

“Greenery is not only
affordable, it prevents
a space from being
stale. Any plant—a
succulent, fiddle-leaf
fig, mother-in-law’s
tongue—brings fresh-
ness. We peruse
The Home Depot
and bring home a
living accessory.”
—Kate Marker
©katemarkerinteriors
“Solid-color pillow
covers from
Target are great.
We always buy
the pillow inserts
separately and
inexpensively from
Amazon. Look
for microfiber or
synthetic down
fillers 2 inches larger
than your cover
to make even the
most low-cost
pillow feel heavy
and spendy. Here,
we paired solid
dusty rose ones
from Target with
a Laine + Alliage
silk pillow.”
—Chelsey Cox and
Rachel Rector
©chinottohousedesign
“Amazon has really stepped up its game when
it comes to home decor-from candlesticks and
baskets to vases and frames. There are so many
great finishing touches. Pairing this dainty
bud vase from Amazon with vintage accesso-
ries creates the perfect balance of old and new.”
—Bria Hammel ©briahammelinteriors

orful discounted

“At nearly 6 /2 feet
tall, the Hovet mirror
from IKEA is an
unbeatable bargain.
Its minimalist frame
is versatile; I’ve used
it in dining rooms,
bedrooms, and a chic
home gym.”
—NozNozawa

“When in need of an acces-
sory that feels worldly with
an approachable price tag
attached, I often find bone
inlay boxes, lamps,
and hurricanes on Etsy.
The shop BonelnlayCrafts
has a variety bar none.”
—Jeremy D. Clark ©jeremydclark
“I love marble
because it’s stunning,
never goes out of
style, and mimics the
serenity we feel out-
doors. I find decor
like candleholders
and this marble
occasional table
at T.J.Maxx.”

Things to Consider
Material: The chair’s location should inform the
fabric. A family room needs a high-durability
print or performance fabric, while a bedroom
can afford something more plush.
The Fit: If you can try before you buy, do it!
Sitting in a chair is the only way to know if it
feels good to you. In some cases, you can
even pick your seat cushion, with options from
feather-filled to firm. Buying ready-made?
Read the return policy to avoid restocking fees.

Things to Consider
Scale: A fixture that seems oversize in a shop
can look diminutive in your home, or vice versa.
If you’ve fallen in love with one, there’s a good
chance it comes in another size too.
Height: Before purchasing, check the minimum
height required to be sure a fixture will work.
Need it a bit longer? Most brands offer down
stems to add length during installation.
Installation: This is no DIY job. Call a certified
electrician to ensure the fixture is properly
secured and connected to a dimmer for per-
fect mood lighting.

Things to Consider
Weight: If you plan on moving this table
around, keep it lightweight but sturdy enough
to fearlessly hold a drink. Placing it between
two swivel chairs? Go for a piece with some
heft that won’t get rattled by a little bump.
Purpose: While they can live in any spot—a
den, an office, or a family room—accent tables
are not meant to store your various remotes
or hold a lamp. For that, look for end tables with
drawers or smaller nightstands that can do
double duty in a living room.

ГИЗ HIS YEAR, the la cienega
Design Quarter in Los Angeles held
its 13th annual LEGENDS event. But
the festival also saw a major first:
House Beautiful hosted its inaugural Wal-

different design houses. We asked 15 interior
designers to meet us at the Grade Showroom,
pick out a pattern, and tell us where they’d
use it. Their answers will inspire you.

would be fun on an accent wall, in a sunroom,

at much higher temps
than for porcelain or
earthenware. Antique
bowls, pitchers, and

at anywhere from

Similar to the Eames

these lounger-footstool

now-defunct Plycraft
company starting in the
late 1950s fetch a few
thousand dollars today.

PENDLETON
BLANKET
Beloved for nearly 130 years,
these wool classics have
recognizable geometric
patterns often inspired
by Native American designs.
Vintage throws start
around $150; rare ones
go for much more.
GAINEY PLANTER
A planter is worth a lot if it’s
marked “Gainey Ceramics” on the
bottom, says Karen Nepacenaof
Destination Eichler near San Fran-
cisco. The former pottery brand’s
handmade glazed planters
can sell for hundreds of dollars.
LIGHT FIXTURES
“Rewiring lamps is
inexpensive,” says Willow
Wright, owner of Urban
Redeux in Alexandria,
Virginia. Lamp shops
can do it for around $25,
plus the cost of materials
($10 to $15).
TRAMPART
This ornate style of
woodworking involves
the meticulous
carving and layering of
found wood or objects
like nails and Popsicle
sticks. Today, these
icons of outsider art
can be worth several
hundred dollars.
TRAVERTINE
FURNITURE
Travertine consoles and
tables are hot items at vin-
tage stores, says vintage
expert Leah Ashley. The
pitted limestone, formed
by mineral deposits in
natural springs, ranges in
color from ivory to pink.

with dish soap and a
garden hose, then top
with new cushions. If
the legs are unwinding,
she says, you can fix
them with a staple gun
and glue. They add
great texture to a room.
STERLING SILVER
“Sterling can be restored
to shining beauty with a
little polish,” says designer
Elisa Baran Trean. An etch-
ing that says “925,” “92.5,”
or “SS” is proof a piece is,
indeed, sterling.
MAJOLICA POTTERY
This colorful, glazed earthenware
with three-dimensional flora
and fauna can sell for $1,000 to
$6,000 apiece. “They work well on
plate stands or hung above door-
ways,” says designer Avery Cox.

Jeremy Kamiya, Kumiyu Furniture
High Point. North Carolina
“I wanted to do something that is hard to reproduce
and would set me apart,” says Jeremy Kamiya, founder
of Kamiya Furniture. He takes what he calls “an honest
approach” to woodworking: no nails, no screws, no
stains. Finding inspiration in the 1,300-year-old five-
storied pagoda at the Horyuji temple in Japan, which
withstands earthquakes in part because it’s made with
fitted joints in lieu of nails, Kamiya approaches his
designs as if he were playing with Lego bricks—fitting
the pieces together seamlessly. He creates simple silhou-
ettes with precision-fit joinery techniques, polished
brass wedges, or wood pins, noting, “Function will inform
the design, but form has final say.” @f urnitureisart

RUE DE L’EGLISE QUILT
Marilyn Armand, Le Point Visible
Bedford, Quebec
Seven years ago, when Marilyn
Armand moved to Quebec, she
learned heritage quilting from
a local women’s group. This led
her to realize that, as she says, “I
want to make quilting alive again,
to explore it as a piece of art.”
She launched Le Point Visible,
repurposing textiles to create
modern, vibrant quilts—which can
take 50 hours each to complete—in
patterns inspired by nature and
architecture. “I don’t waste any-
thing; smaller scraps can be used
as table runners or cushions,” says
Armand, who works with upcycled
15-to-120-foot rolls of new fabric
that companies usually toss. “I love
what I do. It’s been five years and
there hasn’t been a day that I didn’t
want to quilt.” ©lepointvisible

JANUS LAMPS
Danny Kaplan, Danny Kaplan Studio
Brooklyn
“It became this meditative thing for me,” says Danny
Kaplan, explaining what it felt like to learn wheel-
throwing at his local pottery studio. “I would lose myself
for hours.” Trained as a painter at the New School
Parsons School of Design, Kaplan started his own
ceramics studio in 2017, crafting furniture, vessels, and
lighting. His hand-built and wheel-thrown sculptural
pieces—often assembled on top of each other—embody
a modernist aesthetic borne out of ancient shapes. “It’s
all about pushing the material and reinterpreting classical
forms,” Kaplan says. “They begin with symmetry, but
often evolve to have more looseness in the final result.”

POPSICLE AND COLUMN BRUSHES, WALNUT SPOONS, WHISK BROOM, PINSTRIPE SPOONS
Aspen Golann. Berwick, Maine
“I enjoy watching my new life degrade these clothes,” says Aspen Golann, carving wood wearing a ragged pencil skirt and blouse
that met the dress code of her old job as a private-school teacher. She stumbled onto a new career by following some people carrying
wood into what turned out to be a school for trades, including furniture making. Golann enrolled six months later. Today, she
crafts functional objects with the look of modern sculpture entirely by hand. No electricity. No noise. “The silence is a bit of why I do this,”
she says. “There aren’t a lot of jobs that allow you to spend that kind of time in your own head.” ©aspen_golann

NOCON BOWLS AND NOCON MIRROR UNTITLED NO. 16
Jennifer \oeon, Lon Angeles
“I take inspiration from recurring patterns in nature, the way things like spirals, feathers,
vines, leaves, and water crystals organize themselves in order to grow,” says ceramist
Jennifer Nocon. Whether she’s creating the serpentine detail of a lamp base or the hypno-
tizing swirls of a bowl, for Nocon, the process is everything. “It starts when the form of the
ceramic piece is finished but not yet dry,” she says. “Then I apply an underglaze and draw
through it with a carving tool to reveal the color of the clay body underneath. I never know
how a piece will look until it’s finished." @jennifernocon

After studying ceramics in col-

worked as a private chef and a
doula. But she reexamined her
life during the pandemic and
went back to the studio in 2022.
“I wanted to return to creativity,”
she says. Today, her durable,
high-fire, small-batch porcelain
pieces embody vintage vignettes
of the European countryside,
which she recalls from time
spent in the South of France
and Tuscany, and childhood
summers in the Austrian Alps.
Each finished piece, she says,

ARIS IS BEAUTIFUL TODAY,
it was beautiful 200 years ago,
and it will be beautiful 200
years from now,” says New
York designer Garrow Kedi-
gian. He fell in love with the
city on his regular trips there to scout antiques,
some of which he ships back to the States for
himself and his clients. “Eve been coming to Paris
my whole life, and the cost is really in the hotel,”
says the designer, whose style is best described as
grandeur with a modern twist. Beyond the expense,
he says, his visits were always too harried: "I would
rush over and stay for four days and rush back. I
never really had time to soak it all in.”
Naturally, when he had the chance to purchase
an immovable period piece—a circa-1860 pied-
a-terre in the ninth arrondissement—Kedigian
instantly said oui. The Montreal-born designer, who
speaks French but not French construction lingo,
would communicate his vision to his contractor
largely through Google Translate
emails. He kept the 1,200-square-
foot abode’s chevron floors and
dentil moldings but knocked out a
spare bedroom to widen the salon
to something Marie Antoinette
herself would have adored—com-
plete with a gleaming mirrorlike
ceiling that’s actually paint in a
high-gloss finish.
“Even though it’s a one-bedroom
apartment, it’s grand, grand, grand,”
Kedigian says. What the home lacks

that the bed hangings make “a really good puddle

Equally eye-catching are the reproductions
of masterpieces throughout, which appear to be
lifted from the Louvre itself. “I just find my favor-
ite Old Master painting and have it printed on
canvas,” Kedigian says. “It’s like poor man’s art.”
Forming a backdrop to the artworks are richly
colored walls—such as the salon’s 50/50 mix of
Benjamin Moore’s Dragons Blood and Ravishing
Red. The entire apartment, Kedigian says, “is a
circus of colors; you need these amazing ceiling
heights and crown moldings in order to carry
it off.” The rich hues are an anomaly in modern
Paris, where the current colors du jour are grays
and whites. Luckily, Kedigian’s boldness seems to
delight the locals—or at least the antiques dealer
who came over the other night. As the designer
recalls, his guest commented, “This is just so
refreshing. I haven’t seen color in Paris in years!”

AN FRANCISCO’S
historic town-
homes are beloved
for their charm, but
they pose distinct
design challenges.
“A lot of them are sandwiched between
other old homes, so they’re long and
narrow, with funky layouts, giant
blank walls, and bay windows that
are very hard to furnish,” explains
Brit Epperson, founder of Studio Plow
architecture and interior design firm.
When two of Epperson’s longtime
clients—tech entrepreneurs with
a newborn baby girl—purchased a
classic 1920 townhouse in Pacific
Heights, she jumped at the chance
64 HOUSE BEAUTIFUL
to transform it into their vision of
a modern dream home. “The most
recent remodel was a little more tradi-
tional than their aesthetic,” she says,
with espresso-stained red oak floors,
chrome fixtures, and cool gray walls.
“But it was all done in really beautiful
materials that were in great shape.”
She knew she could transform the
three-story, five-bedroom house to
match their tastes, but there was
one problem: The couple’s move-in
date was only five weeks away.
To make the biggest impact fast,
Epperson focused on refinishing the
home’s old bones. First, she sanded
and bleached the floors, then gave
everything—from the casework to the
crown molding to the walls and ceil-
ings—a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s
Swiss Coffee paint. She replaced the
chrome with minimalist black fixtures
but kept the white Calacatta marble
countertops, Shaker-style kitchen
cabinets, and classic bathroom
vanities intact. “We didn’t have the
luxury of time, plus it felt incredibly
wasteful to toss and replace them,”
she explains. Leaving those traditional
elements ended up being a blessing in
disguise: “It gave us really great layers
and textures to build on.”
For starters, that backdrop created
the perfect canvas for the couple’s
ever-growing collection of original
art and modern furniture. The mix
includes Togo, Tacchini, and Mario
Bellini sofas, as well as custom pieces
from Studio Plow and wall hangings
from the wife’s home country of
Mexico. Many items were handpicked
for their soft, sculptural silhouettes,
and Epperson notes that everything is
toddlerproof. “All of the materials and
textures were thought through,” she
says. “Nothing is hyperprecious.”
With its rich hues, tactile mate-
rials, and intricate shapes, the home
is elegant but not untouchable. It’s
meant to evolve as the family grows.
“We tried to build a palette that’s
easy to tweak and shift,” Epperson
explains. “The energy is very calm and
grounded, yet creative.” ft

UYING A HOME AT AUCTION SEEMS
like a win—until you actually move
into it. At least, that was the case for
this family of six who snapped up what
turned out to be a dark, dated, and
ornate Mediterranean home in Dallas. It
took two years to make the call that the place simply wasn’t
working for their busy social lives. When they did, they asked
Dunbar Road Design to transform their house into a “happy,
bright, comfortable, and timeless” home in just six months.
With the hard deadline timed to the family’s return from an
extended trip abroad, principal designer Carla Fonts recalls,
“We literally didn’t sleep.”
She and her team began executing their plan to freshen
up the space so much that, she says, “I wanted it to feel
like you were walking into heaven.” First, she made sure
that every room had at least a hint of sky blue or light green,
“shadowing all the gorgeous foliage outside.” As transfor-
mative as the garden-influenced color choices were, the
furnishings were also key in tailoring the space for the
nonstop family. While the general layout remained the
same, most of the rooms needed a full overhaul to optimize

their flow and usefulness. “This is a party house and a family
house, so I used high-quality performance fabrics on every-
thing,” Fonts says. Now, just like in heaven, all is forgiven.
“Whether it’s kids in dirty shoes, or someone spilling a glass
of wine, it can always come out,” she notes. And newcomers
are welcomed with open arms; the home offers a variety of
areas for gathering, each with a different focus.
There are elegant touches throughout, from the many
vintage Murano glass chandeliers to the Fromental chi-
noiserie wallcovering in the dining room that’s offset by
a more modern burl wood dining table. Other areas have a
more relaxed sensibility—a nook for playing mah-jongg, a
breakfast table for morning coffee, and a newly added solar-
ium inspired by the couple’s trips abroad. The large family
room houses two seating areas with back-to-back fringe-
trimmed sofas and a Parisian-meets-Art Deco custom
high-top bar Fonts designed for the jet-setting homeowners.
In six months, the house went from not a great fit to there’s
no place like home. “Now,” Fonts says, “when the family
returns from a trip, they love walking in the door.” i

ROWING UP IN
the 1970s, Carson
Kressley loved visit-
ing his grandmother
in the eastern Penn-
sylvania countryside.
As a child, he watched a farmhouse
being built on a nearby hill and dreamed
of owning one like it someday
About 20 years ago, the very same
property went on sale for the first time.
The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
alum had just purchased his New York
City apartment and felt owning two
homes was unreasonable for a budding
TV star. He didn’t make an offer. In
2016, it hit the market again. At that
point, “I had the opposite of buyer’s
remorse,” Kressley says. “I was like, ‘This
time, I must get this house.’”
Originally constructed by a custom
builder as his primary residence,
the five-bedroom, three-bathroom
colonial home spans 4,000 square feet
and boasts walnut paneling, wooden
beams, brick fireplaces, and intricate
millwork. Those details perfectly
fit the rustic yet elevated aesthetic
Kressley sought, so he focused the
redesign—which he helmed him-
self—on updating the bathrooms and
giving the rest of the farmhouse a
cosmetic overhaul. ‘At first,” he says,
“I thought, ‘I’m going to keep it very
current and simple. All the rooms are
going to be white and gray. It’ll look
like Club Monaco and Ralph Lauren’s
store had a baby.’ ”
That concept faded in favor of a
cozy vibe created by layered textures
and calming neutrals with pops of
color, such as orange Hermes throw
pillows in the family room and a Tif-
fany Blue-painted ceiling in the dining
room. “I can’t do minimal,” Kressley
says. “I like pretty things too much.”
A longtime competitive equestrian
who keeps his horses on-site,
Kressley loves the thrill of a good
chase—he spent years sourcing a
high-low mix of furnishings and
amassing an art collection featuring
horses, hunt scenes, and country
living. It all adds up to a house that
now feels like home. “A lot of people
I know have places on Long Island
or in Upstate New York,” Kressley
says. “I wanted to go back to my roots,
to Pennsylvania, and be close to
my family. It was just meant to be.” i

“I’VE WORN
LAMPSHADES
ON MY HEAD
just to get them through economy class,” Lucinda Cham-
bers admits. “My husband asks, ‘When will we be able to go
somewhere without you begging the airline to let you bring
on your inappropriate luggage?’ The problem is, I love every-
thing! I love white ceramics. 1 love colorful ceramics. I like
glittery things. And I like really dull things, you know?”
But Chambers’s home in Shepherd’s Bush, London, is no
mere repository for her stuff. It’s a celebration of it, a display
of odds and ends she’s picked up in faraway markets in
Marrakech and her regular haunts on Portobello Road. As a
former fashion director for British Vogue and cofounder of
online fashion and decor marketplaces Colville and Collag-
erie, her eye is second to none. Chambers makes the boldest
moves work—nonchalantly recalling when she painted her
sitting room primary red and yellow based on her youngest
son’s suggestion that it match his Lego bricks, or the time
she rescued an antique bed from a nearby alley way.
When Chambers first saw her house 30 years ago, it was
“shabby and uninteresting, with a minuscule kitchen almost
entirely filled by a great AGA,” she says. Though the place
didn’t have much going for it beyond its good size and prime
location, the garden won Chambers over. She’s spent the last
three decades turning the humdrum house into a fascinating
home, enlarging the kitchen, then working within the exist-
ing “hodgepodge” 1900s layout, using little more than paint
and her collections to transform it.
Among the eye-catching items are the many curtains
she began gathering at age 12 (“I don’t know where I thought
I was going to live with so many windows...Buckingham
Palace?”), now sewn into cushions and lampshades and
scattered about for a cozy effect. Plates clustered on the bath-
room and kitchen walls add texture alongside paintings and
photographs from her travels.
The home may appear to be a happy mash-up of every-
thing Chambers loves, but when it comes to decorating, her
approach is methodical. She carries a notebook to sketch
different options and test swipes of paint until she lands on
the right combination. And she’s not afraid to make mis-
takes. “A room can take a long time, and that’s fine,” she says.
“Like fashion, it’s trial and error. You can always start again
or repaint—it’s basically just posh dusting.” i

A BELGIAN DESIGN
master may seem like
an unexpected muse
for a 1990s ranch
house in Texas Hill
Country, but Hous-
ton interior designer Marie Flanigan was
inspired by Axel Vervoordt’s wabi-sabi
approach and reverence for nature for
good reason. Her clients wanted to
modernize their home on a 200-acre
plot on Lake Travis without obstructing
the landscape or erasing its history as
a family gathering place. Looking to
Vervoordt, “we kept coming back to
simplified details, organic textures, and
an earthen color palette,” Flanigan says.
The goal of the renovation was to
unite old and new seamlessly, making
the home more graceful and comfort-
able, but just as soulful. Flanigan and
lead designer Melanie Hamel expanded
the existing millwork with 20-inch
white oak plank floors and reclaimed
beams, and added bluestone slabs to
match the floors. Custom plaster gives
the walls a timeworn finish.
The majestic, rugged surroundings
take center stage via minimalist steel-
framed picture windows in the living
room. To complement that landscape,
the designers filled the home with a
range of textured materials, Hamel says:
“chunky, slubby linens, supple velvets,
weathered leather, and raw edges.” In
the kitchen, unlacquered brass hardware
and lighting contrast with the blackened
metal patina of the island.
Though there was room to make
everything Texas-size in this 4,800-
square-foot house, Flanigan resisted.
Instead, she “paired cozy, quiet spaces
with more grand openings.” The splayed
front door leads into an intimate entry-
way, while a custom sofa set within a
massive bay window in the living room
offers a comfy spot to gaze outside.
Throughout, “the house is a study in
theories of compression and release,”
Flanigan says. It’s the architectural
way of taking a deep breath, and equally
soothing to the senses, ft
