Start stitching here
Identify the thread colours in your kit from
the key and the symbols used to represent
them on the chart.
Start stitching the design in the centre
(where the two black ‘o’ lines cross on the
chart). Fold the fabric in half each way to find
its centre (this is where the folds cross).
Thread the needle with two strands of
yellow. Make a cross stitch for each yellow
symbol on the chart. This
stitch has two diagonal arms
and fills one square on both
the chart and fabric (a
square on the fabric is
marked out by four holes).
To work a cross stitch, bring the needle up in the
bottom left corner of the square and take it down
in the top right. Bring it back up in the bottom
right and down in the top left as shown in the
diagram. Bring the needle up to work the next
stitch, using the same holes as your previous
stitch along one side. Secure the end of the
thread under your first few stitches.
Count the same number of squares on
both the chart and the fabric to keep your
place. When you need to change colour, thread
your needle through the back of your stitches
and cut the end close to where it emerges.
5Add the backstitch outlines when you have
finished all the cross stitch. This is worked
in a ‘one step back, two steps forward’ motion
following the chart and the diagram on page 64.
Bring the needle up one hole from the end of
the line and take it down at the end. Bring it up
again one hole in front of where you started.
Work all the backstitch in this way using one
strand of black or red following the key.
Finally, add the French knots in red for the
holly berries as explained on page 65.

Decorate a dress for a little princess
with this pretty fairy. Tack waste
canvas to the garment so you can
keep your stitches and work through
it into the fabric below using a sharp
needle. You can stitch on a silk dress
as well as other fabrics, but you will
need to remove the waste canvas
threads without making them wet.

The white berries are French knots.
Add these over the top of the red
cross stitches at the end. Bring the
needle up in the corner of the correct
square shown on the chart and wrap
it in the thread once or twice before
taking it down again. Keep holding
the thread taut with your other hand
throughout and avoid pushing the
needle back in exactly the same hole
- on evenweave there will be another
one you can use close by. See page
65 for a French knot diagram.

These stained glass designs have an
authentic luminous gleam as they
are stitched entirely in rayon floss.
Rayon threads have a wonderful
sheen and are also more springy
than stranded cotton making your
stitches stand out against the fabric
for a real impact. This does mean
they are a little harder to handle
than stranded cotton. Dampen the
threads with a wet sponge before
you start stitching to smooth out any
kinks and reduce static. It is also a
good idea to stick to short lengths of
thread and use a good quality
needle such as a gold-plated one to
prevent the rayon from snagging.

MINCE PIE RECIPE

These designs are worked in
whole cross stitch and
backstitch only, which
makes them nice and
easy to stitch.
Ingredients
to make 24 pies
225g (8oz) butter, cubed
450g (ilb) plain flour
60g (2oz) icing sugar
2 egg yolks
For the filling
450g (ilb) mincemeat
a dash or two of brandy to taste
To make the mince pies
Sift the flour into a bowl and add the butter. Rub the two
together using your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs,
and then mix in the icing sugar. Add the egg yolks and mix to
make a smooth, but not sticky dough, adding a drop or two of
water if required. Chill in the fridge for half an hour.
Roll the dough on a floured board to about 7mm thickness. Cut
out 24 rounds using a 6cm cutter and line bun or muffin tins
with your circles. Fill these w’th two tablespoons of mincemeat.
Roll the remaining pastry again and cut tops for your pies using
a 5cm cutter. Dampen the edge of each pie to seal the top and
push down gently with your thumb around the outside. Cook at
2oo°C for 20 minutes, until slightly browned. Sprinkle with a
little icing sugar for a delicious Christmas treat.

HOW TO MOUNT YOUR CARD

FINISHING
When you have taken the trouble to stitch a
beautiful design for someone, you want it to look
good framed in a card. Follow our tips for a
professional finish
YOU WILL NEED:
Your finished
stitched piece
Soft, clean towel
Thick card or foam
mouse-mat
Dressmaking pins
Scissors
Wash your work following the guidelines on page
64 and allow to dry. Lay your design face down on
a fluffy towel and press it with a medium iron.
Lay your pressed work face up on the card or
mouse-mat. Place your card aperture over it and
move it until you are happy with the way it looks.
Stick pins around the inner edges of the aperture
On square cards place pins in the corners
Thin wadding
Double-sided tape
Carefully lift off the card mount and trim the fabric
to about 1cm away from the pins. This will leave
enough fabric for securing the stitching inside the
card Attach small pieces of double-sided tape to the
back of the card around the edge of the aperture.
On square cards use longer strips around the edges
To ensure the design goes in
the card the right way, mark
the flap that folds down
on your stitching in
pencil
Peel off the tape backing and put the card, right
way up, over the fabric, using the pins as a guide.
Press down on the aperture to make the tape stick
to the fabric. Turn the card over and put the
wadding, cut to the size of aperture, over the back
of the stitching (this is optional but gives a nice
padded look). Attach strips of tape to the left-hand
flap as shown. Peel off the backing and carefully
fold the flap down on top of the stitching.
