Traffic line I Path - Daily Experience of Landscape with Changing Nature This space has a location feature that binds Natural Sciences Building, library. Humanities Building, dormitory and to-be-completed education center by short distance. Thus, the primary task was to make crossing allees that satisfies these functional requirements. As said earlier, it was a decision based on the constant field investigation and observation. The plan aims to give diverse landscape experiences to pedestrians by exhibiting variety in the visual side, the width of traffic line, pavement materials and surrounding planting. Space and its Contents - What impression will it show? Interestingly slanted to one side, the existing 3,000 pyeong site was divided into three levels. A scene of ‘forest’ occupies the highest level, giving a shade and serving as a background of the site, and the middle level makes a symbolic space through land art using topography. Located at the lowest level are small theme gardens that function as relaxing meeting places. Based on this basic frame, 'Ancients’ road’, ‘Maple Garden, ‘Stair Garden and Wildflower Hili’, ‘Open-air Theater’ and ‘Herb Garden’ were created. Ancients’ road, running along the symbolic axis consisted of campus buildings, is the most symbolic, significant space combined with a zelkova road and resting facility. Planting - Naturalness & Contingency A plant is more than what you touch; it stimulates one’s various senses. Hence the need of vast imagination and experiencefPractical knowledge in plants) in planting. The previous inside planting mainly had quite an artificial appearance despite the fact that the campus neighbored a mountain. Kaizuka junipers, yews, royal azaleas, pine trees and commemorative trees, which are as many as the years of the school, for example. Thus, the point in planting plan was to make the landscape natural enough to be overlooked.

Shingu Botanic Garden, unlike the others, presents an atmosphere of a park, with various facilities like Insect Ecology Center, children’s garden and seasonal flower plant garden. People imagine the usual botanic garden where all kinds of rare plants and trees flocked together along the road with signposts in front. But difference is shown from the entrance in Shingu Botanic Garden. Western style garden is the first space to encounter. Using the existing stepped topography, the entrance exhibits unique Western gardens such as French plane geometric figure garden with a fountain in the forepart, and Italian terrace garden in the rear. Insect Ecology Center greets inside the terrace garden. In the interior of a glass greenhouse are a surrounding green zone, flowering shrubs and butterflies. Seasonal flower plant garden has various flower plants and shrubs to provide beautiful flowers in spring, summer and autumn. As for a wood playground, several decks of different height were connected, enabling the children to move around, helping them being energetic. Eco Center, a 19-meter-high greenhouse of the size of 1,000 nf; is easily spotted from afar by its distinct exterior. As it is a greenhouse, various plants were introduced centering on the ones that grow in Southern region, including bamboo. Educational facilities like audio-visual room, exhibition room and environment experience study room are located underground for lectures of Urban Horticulture, Landscape Architecture departments.

The Seoul City Hall building, which had maintained the same appearance for a long time, renewed its rear garden by transforming the parking lot into a downtown rest area overgrown with 20 meter-high pine trees. It was an attempt to scale down its parking lot, create an environment-friendly green space offering an open rest area to visitors of city hall and allow them to feel green nature within midtown, while improving the working environment of officials and promoting the use of public transportation. Planted in the green space are 10,300 trees of 30 species including pine trees and 20,000 flowers of 20 species including Korean bellflower. 4-5 meter-wide and 257 meter-long passage leading to the inside was paved with sand stone in an environment-friendly pavement method, after filming the ground base to allow rainwater to seep underground. The parking lot was also finished with same sand stone. Its lawn blocks, the parking lines, make a green parking lot. Japanese Red Pines planted between the several green resting areas sets off their difference, thus emphasizing die space. The courtyard area is about 1,600 pyeong. Though not large in terms of figures, it has become to serve as a pilot model of green park project of government buildings by providing the public with an open green space within a government office building located in central Seoul.

Space Conception We created the scene of an environment-friendly image on the whole. It is largely composed of a culture experiencing zone • an ecology experiencing zone • and leisure zone and the areas adjacent to urban district limit space by introducing a buffing green by taking advantage of existing forest. Basic Plan for Building the Waterside We reflected the existing vegetation status to the full and divided the area to two parts. One is where the sea water and fresh water are mixed and the other is fresh water area by allowing for the environment incline and the alteration of salt concentration and we chose vegetation and planned planting according to salt-tolerant nature and moist needs. We planned various layer structures(herbs and trees) according to geographical features incline and presented various waterside scenes by considering perennial herb’s ruddy colors and blooming times. We also brought in aquatic plants on a large scale to help various creatures and birds to live and to purify water and to enjoy the scenic beauty. Wetland part plants community planting In the area where the sea water and fresh water met (section 1,2,6,7,8) which is close to the East sea, plant evasive salt plants such as reeds and common reds which can grow relatively well in the salty water and in the fresh water areafsection 3,4,5), plant reeds and common reeds as well as cattail and Yellow flag iris to form a community. Planting in the embankment method In the area where the sea water and fresh water met(section 1,2,6,7,8), we planted reeds and common reeds community. Below the surface(M.S.L) of the fresh water area(section 3,4,5), we repeated the unit pattern of reeds and common reeds which can stand flooding quite well and above the surface of the water, repeated the unit pattern of cattail. Iris pseudoacorus L, solidago Japonica, meadow-sweet, Lythrum Salicaria L and loosestrife. Also for the area higher than E.L Im, we took a cutting and planted willow branches to accelerate the stability of the embankment and ecological alteration.

Surrounded by stores and apartments in Apgujeong-dong, the thriving town of Gangnam, the school is located in the area where rapidly changing neighborhood and the old school facility coexist. The steel-framed building was initially designed for classrooms, but would gradually turn into a neighborhood welfare facility later. The point was to develop it into a flexible and variable space. When a typical school building is constructed in T shape with a play field in front and walls being raised against the road, this building has tore down the walls to connect itself to the neighboring community. The encounter of the plan and elevation starts from the main gate located at the corner, which is spotted diagonally from Dosandaero, to a rooftop garden, introducing a new scene into a city. By afforesting the roof, it provides a rest area in the city to students and citizens, and fulfills the education puipose, being composed of various kinds of wildflowers. With the stand facing the play field recognized as a part of the building, and the hallway visually open to outer space, it leaves no boundaty between the landscape and building.

A house, road, garden and playground occupy the space among the forest, trees of which change their unique colors by season. • Garden - As a buffer zone joined by a lonesome outer space of city, a garden with blossoming flowers and tinting leaves delivers the beauty of nature. Water plants grow under the murmuring water. Children would enjoy themselves in a garden instead of just a playground. Square - An occupied house needs an empty, large space. Thus, a square on the center of the complex. People hang around this usually empty space, and also share the enjoyment when a festival or gathering is held. oiat'S-S^ Эй» Ц|£У SPI 43£У»со} ms ««as чзв ojg7jej ади xHW «адМ «£1даК>К>& »34j8 E'Soisq. ziEiQ HRISO. Path - A path, which is a link between spaces and between people, is a passage connecting the complex and the outside, as well as a short trip for a walk. A small bridge and stab s are installed to keep the road circulating, safely separated from the bow of vehicles. - Connectivity - Actual usable space, considering the ever-flowing outer space and standstill complex site, is not limited to the inside, but extends to a causeway and entrance path. The complex is not an island, but a small town, and it joins the outside to share the functions that cannot be done inside. Shield functions not only as a hide, but also as a connection by the open view. • Urbanized Nature Park - A small park was built in the public area bordering with the outside so as to connect the whole site to the local society. Public Courtyard - For officetel residents, the 2nd floor deck was made into a garden, whose multi-purpose walking path and various plants are built around the central square.

The deserted reclaimed land requires a different environment from that of the usual residential complex, having an ultramodern IT industrial complex and being the central living district located in the heart of a city active in international business and commerce. It distinguishes itself as a space where work and leisure come together because of close location of the workplace and residence, where one encounters foreigners who have different appearances and cultures, and where interchange between the city and nature, between different information take place. It is like an island floating in the midst of the sea, with its high green rate and its appearance sun ounded by scores of square meters of green zone and park. Accordingly, the traditional Korean garden was built up, thoroughly conforming to reasons of nature. The prevailing traditional features of gardens are found in the Sosaewon 48 pass, basic intention for Wolmi Park design, ditch. The garden is formulated manually, as if it has been created by harmony of heaven. The concept of space composition of Wolmi park can be translated into harmony of tradition and nature. - Representation of traditional garden - ‘Chung’ was created as representive style by each type of garden (garden of royal palace, garden located in the countryside, garden of private house) -Shape of ‘Won’ was represented as ‘curved valley’, real features of each season The ‘ChungWon’ is split to two different syllables. - ‘Chung’ is defined as a place surrounded by walls and composed manually by plants and works of natural features of each season - ‘Won’ means garden, a place where human appreciates and enjoys nature Meanings of Wolmido - Various cultural components of Wolmido were metaphorically embodied Finding nature from city -Complementary relation with nature aspects of Wolmi island and surroundings - Construction of ecologically wholesome and stable green place Site plan

I planned the space after thinking of Gwangju’s images which include traditional culture and also develop and change toward future. I didn’t just want to follow the tradition but I didn’t want the space to be too modem either. The theme, meeting between tradition and modernity, is popular but it is actually quite a difficult subject. This design is not to seek the answer for this problem but to express Korea’s traditional elegance and modem beauty. For this purpose, I planned space planning based on the traditional concept and elements which would be filled inside of the space in two ways. One is to express traditional elements and the other is to express modern elements. Also I tried to take advantage of the S site which has an extensive landscape architecture area without a ground parking lot and at the same time planned the space with focusing on three places divided by the dong.
