WELCOME I KBB
EDITOR
As soon as I spotted The Main Company’s pics of a home
in Yorkshire - formerly 10 bedsits -1 thought it would
make a great front cover. With an amazing geometric
roof, which throws playful shadows across die kitchen,
and units painted in Little Greene’s Ci trine Green, it’s my favourite
kind of project: imaginative, beautiful and striking. If you're planning
your own kitchen renovation anytime soon, check out our must-read
guide to the different kitchen layouts. Each idea will help you to create
a hardworking scheme that will maximise your available space - like
Searle 8 Taylor’s open-plan kitchen in I lampshire. It’s the perfect
backdrop for the owners’ colourful collection of Clarice Cliff antiques.
When we were planning our concrete story - the Material of the
Month for this issue -1 was worried we’d end up with a solid wash
of grey'. So, I was thrilled to discover the many innovations taking
place in the concrete industry, from basins and taps to game-changing
products like microcement - a resin-based product, which can be mixed
with pigments to create endless colour options. Unknown Works’
design of a terraced h< >me in I л >nd< m features a ki tchen, < nitdoi >r space
and garden, which glows with warm pink pigmented concrete tones
and was inspired by the owners’ trip to Mexico. We also chat to James
Clarke, co-fbunder of Elie 8 James, w hich manufactures concrete
worktops, basins and showers, anil discover how and w hy the business
has flourished.
I’ve moved many times in my life - including from I am don to
Dublin and back again - and haw done up several houses along the
way. One thing I’ve learned is that freestandingappliances - like your
favourite pieces of furniture - are an excellent investment because
they can move w ith you. Our appliance focus on
freestanding appliances this month reveals a wealth
of cool and colourful designs, such as the bright
orange Liebherr fridge-freezer, right, which is sure
to add a splash ot inn. And, come on, w ho doesn’t
dream ol imu day ow ninga beautiful pale blue Again №
blush pink l.verhot range cooker to add coloni and

SPOTLIGHT
We love seeing daring designs pop up on our Instagram - whether it's
a glamorous kitchen, a quirky bedroom packed with personality, or a
colourful ensuite. Fancy having a nosy around our readers' stylish spaces?
Let's take a look shall we...
Pink and green remains a popular colour
combination amongst renovators. If
you're a fan, make sure to check out
the super stylish green and pink attic
conversion on page 88. Jonathan of
@guywiththepinktiles has thoroughly
embraced this look with pink and white
wall tiles and a green painted ceiling.
‘I always knew I wanted a bold
bathroom with lots of small tiles. I
complemented the walls with
herringbone marble flooring,*
explains Jonathan. ‘The
inspiration for the overall
design came from visiting
some of my favourite hotels
over the years. I have even
displayed some toiletries from
my favourite stays on a floating
marble shelf above the bath *
Roisin of @_primrose studio. had a vision of
a vintage meadow when coming up with
the design of her spare bedroom. The walls
are dressed in She's A Wildflower wallpaper in
cream from Lust Home, while the bold ceiling is
painted in Raspberry Ripple from Little Greene.
‘This colour is to die for - it's fun and joyful but
still has so much depth and warmth to it’ says
Roisin. ‘I have added some fun accessories,
rattan bedside tables from Oliver Bonas, and a
beautiful headboard from Birdie Fortescue
I love injecting colour and texture into a
space to transform it into a warm and
welcoming environment *
We love this emerald gem in
Natasha of ©netting. Killer's home,
who wanted the space to feel
modern yet inviting. ’I fell in love
with Calacatta Viola marble at
the stone yard and knew it had
to be a key focus,* says Natasha.
‘A green kitchen had always
been a non-negotiable
for me. but it had л
to have some
charm, so we
went for Shaker
style. We also
opted for a
long island
overlooking the
garden through
the slim glazing *

WELLNESS LUXURY
British silk specialist
Gingerlily has unveiled

per cent pure long-strand

collection. Dipped in a rich
shade of blue, the range

pillowcases plus flat and

Gingerlily's founder Deborah Fiddy tells us more about this luxurious material...
What are the benefits of silk bedding?
Silk duvets and pillows are resistant to dust mites,
making them hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and
hxgicnic to sleep on. Combine them with silk bedding
and you can create a natural cocoon to ensure the
perfect nights sleep. The material also acts as a
natural heat conductor and a further benefit is
the high protein content found within silk, which
helps to keep jour hair smooth and your skin soft -
making it tlx* ideal choice ft>r anyone with
allergies or skin conditions such as eczema. Plus,
its irresistibly comfortable and it looks and feels
incredibly luxurious.
Do you have any maintenance tips?
For laundering, we recommend that you use a
specialist silk or a delicate liquid detergent. Make
sure you always air or line dty, followed bya cool
iron in order to restore die sheen of the silk and help
maintain its natural suppleness.

MATCH MADE
MOSAIC FACTORY has joined forces with The Rug Company's
co-founder Suzanne Sharp to launch a new collection of tiles
Handmade from cement in Morocco, the tiles are available in nine
patterns and a series of colourways - perfect for livening up any
kitchen or bathroom. The inspiration came from Suzannes memories
of growing up in Malta and Rome, as well as classic 1970s Italian
design. From £103.20 per sq m. mosaicfactory.com
*1 LOVE TO TILE AS MUCH
AND AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE,
OFTEN COMBINING TWO
DIFFERENT PATTERNS”
| Q&A WITH SUZANNE SHARP: |
How would you describe
your interior design style?
I design with the intention of
evoking emotions and creating
spaces that resonate with people
on a personal level. 1 pay attention
to the flow of the space, create
comfortable areas using furniture
and objects that tell a story, and add
a sense of history, nostalgia and
personal connection to each room.
Why did you choose
cement for this range?
(iement tiles offer a wide range of
design possibilities due to their
versatility'. They can be customised
with various patterns, colours,
and shapes, allowing lor creative
and unique installations. Skilled
artisans use sheets of metal, often
brass or steel, to craft the moulds.
'Hie metal sheets are carefully cut
and shaped according to the pattern
design. The possibilities an* endless.
Any tops tips for tiling a
kitchen or bathroom?
(dement tiles arc versatile and
suitable for both walls and floors.
I am particularly proud of the way
that the tiles look in my latest
project in Malta, where we tiled
the entire bathroom. This creates a
cohesive and unified look, making
the space feel larger and more
luxurious. In a kitchen, 1 love to tile
as much and as high as possible,
often combining two different
patterns, sometimes even three.

Words: Irina lacob
How do you start your day?
I low the energy and motivation that
comes with being an early riser, so my
working day starts at around 5am.
()nce I ’w opened our studio in south
Manchester, welcomed the team and
turned on the radio, I hit theground

What are you responsible

I shape and owrsee the strategic

How did Elie & James begin?
By combining more than 20 wars’
experience in residential and
commercial builds w ith a low of
concrete and a passion for interiors,
architecture and history.
Co-founder Danielle and I
established the company in 2019,
to transfirrm how concrete is used
in homes and commercial spaces,
using innovative designs which
demonstrate our creative flair and
fabrication capabilities and showcase
the versatility of this material.
Can you talk us through the
creative process...
Being passionately design-led, I’m
a firm believer that imagination is
ev erything; there are no limits to
creative innovation. I have a natural
ability to visualise new designs
and translate them into prototype
production straight from my
head, without the need for CAD
or technical solutions. My design
inspiration is drawn from my low
of art, architecture, history and
Italy. My desire is to create timeless,
unique products, which are beautiful,
practical and versatile.
What is the manufacturing
process like?
.All our concrete is handcrafted to
order, to provide customisation
options for size, design, finish and
colour - and to enable rigorous
quality assurance.
The process starts with the
production of a handmade wooden
casting mould, which is then sealed
with a water-resistant lacquer. We use
an array of materials to manufacture
our products, which are sourced from
ail over the world. Eleven different
ingredients are batched and blended
to form die concrete mixture, before
being sprayed or wet-poured into
the mould.
The cast concrete undergoes a
30-hour cure period, after which it is
What is the last thing you

the power is turned on for the

concrete casts overnight It’s
instinctive to want to turn everything
off at the end of the working day,
so I need to make sure this hasn’t
accidentally happened, and that the
power supply is left on.
What is your proudest

How it started
H MILLER BROS
Brothers I loward and I high Miller, who are award-winning garden and furniture
designers, have also can ed a niche in crafting beautiful bespoke kitchens
What's your background as
designers?
Howard: I studied architecture
at die Glasgow School of Art and,
after 1 graduated, worked for several
high-end architects, first in New
York and then in Ijondon. As a side
hustle, I designed gardens for friends
and family and it took off, with a
series of show gardens for the Royal
I lorticultural Society. That led to a
gold-medal-winning Dark Matter
(landen at the Chelsea Rower Show.
Our more recent garden, the Alder
1 ley Urban Foraging Station, won a
Silwr-t .ilt, at the2022 R1 IS show.
Hugh: My passion for wood as a
material started w hen I was young:
I made my first piece of furniture
at 15. Afterearning a masters in
architecture from the University of
Sheffield, I founded a workshop at
24, designing and making bespoke
furniture. A real highlight was
being aw arded a Winston Churchill
Memorial Fellowship to trawl across
Japan, to research Japanese wood
craftsmanship. My collection of
furniture inspired by that research
was exhibited at the Saatchi (lallery
in London and the (‘heongju Craft
Bienniale in South Korea.
Words: Vicki Evans
How did the company
start out?
Howard: We both moved back to
our hometown, Liverpool, in 2015
and leased an amazing space in a
19th-century warehouse overlooking
the docks. It was an incredibly
creative time, and w e took on various
types of work, including a conceptual
piece for I’hc National Trust and
several art suites at the Icehotcl in
Sweden’s arctic circle. T hese one-off
projects ran alongside domestic
fitted cabinetry and kitchens for our
company 11 Miller Bros.
How do your different
mindsets work together in
the company?
Hugh: We haw opposite
perst mal ity types and very
complementary skills. 1 lowevvr,
because we are family we can haw
a frank discussion. I am a details
person and I loward is more of a big-
picture or conceptual person. This
works w ell on the kind of projects we
do because a kitchen must work on
two levels, both as an interior space,
with its own distinct character, and
on a micnr level, ensuring it is elegant
and beautifully crafted in function
and detail.
Your designs focus on the
natural beauty of wood;
what is about wood that has
captured your imagination?
Hugh: 1 low how varied it is, from
species to species and from one part
of the tree to another. When you
make things from solid hardwood
like we do, the possibilities are
endless, as we can get the most from
its inherent natural characteristics.
Your kitchens use traditional
manufacturing methods;
why is this?
Howard: I he kitchen market
is dominated by large, industrial
outlets. We need to can e out our own
niche and play to our strengths. We
can control the whole process from
design inception through making,
to installation, allow ing us to create
unique designs and use traditional
methods and unusual materials.
How do you put your stamp
on a kitchen, no matter what
the design is?
Hugh: Many of our influences are
related to our architectural training.
I tend to draw heavily from the
Scandinavian modem movement of
the mid-2()th Century - designers
like 1 Jans Wegner and Alvar .\alto.
Their expert use of timber and
how they achieved lightness in
their work is something we try to
achieve in our kitchens. Coming
from the British furniture-making
tradition, I’m influenced by the
Arts and (’rafts movement of the
early 20th (xntury, where exposed
jointing and a celebration of crafted
details are paramount I love the
American interpretation of this style
- architects like Greene and Greene
and Frank Lloyd Wright. ЕШ

CROSS SH API
Inglis 1 fall was approached by owner Sally
McNair to design a bold, contemporary
kitchen that would complement the striking
architecture of the new-build project she had
recently embarked on in Buckinghamshire.
Sally wanted dean lines, sleek surfaces and a
strong colour palette, plus maximum storage.
“In terms of layout, we like to design with
blocks and zones in mind, each with a specific
focus or function,” explains Jay Powell,
designer at Inglis I lall. “Two slim portrait
windows broke up the back wall of the room
and captured the clean zone - dishwasher,
sink and hidden bin - in between. The walls
on cither side created deep corners and had
identical reveals before large steel-framed
doors, making them ideal for the bulkier
appliance and storage blocks. ()n the fourth
wall, a conceal-reveal cabinet houses a WFII
station in one half, with a show-stopping bar
on the other - the sliding door allows tor one
side to be open while the other is out of sight.
At the heart of the kitchen is a large island,
which is perfect for cooking, dining and
entertaining. The resulting layout creates an
efficient and intuitive working environment."
1 landlcless drawers bring a minimalist
feel to the base cabinets, while the perimeter
cabinetry, painted in Farrow 8 Ball’s
Skimming Stone, allows for the striking black
band-sawn oak island to stand out. Accents
of Farrow 8 Balls Red ILarth brings a much-

BROKEN L-SHAPE
+ ISLAND
The couple, who own this new-build home in Bristol, wanted
a calm yet characterful open-plan living space that worked
equally well for socialising and their hectic family life.
“We explored the idea of a more traditional L-shape island,
but opted for a gap between the base units and the bank of
floor-to-ceiling cabinetry,” explains Jess Moult, designer
at I larvey Jones. "With the marble splashback and open
shelving, we ran into issues with workingout how to end it if
we opted tor an L-shape layout. We were reluctant to box in
the corner of the room and create a void because we wanted
to maximise the space available w ithout compromising on
the aesthetics. It was vital to indude the large fridge-freezer,
steam oven and pantry larder within the tall furniture, but
there simply wasn’t sufficient wall space for these if we’d
gone with a complete L-shape, without having to include tall
furniture to the other side of the base cabinetry .”
The solution to this puzzle has resulted in clearly defined
cooking, preparation and storage zones, with the large
kitdien island housing the sink, bin and dishwasher from
the work side of the space, plus seating for tour on the sodal
side. Base cabinets with space-efficient drawers flank the
focal point of the kitchen - the stunning 1 acanche range
cooker. Lhe owners chose J larvey Jones’s, \rbor cabinetry
for its blend of traditional and contemporary elements, as
it's a halfway house between Shaker style and die kitchen
company’s more minimal Linear collection, w hich features
flat-fronted doors and drawers.
Lhe thin stiles and rails to the door fronts keep the look
modern, with the locus on the hardware and finishes. Hie
concrete-effect finish of the worktops contrasts beautifully
with the madilc backsplash and the warm w<mx! flooring.

KBB I KNOW HOW
The owners of this striking ncw-buikl home
in I lampshire came to Darren Taylor, the
managing director of Searle 8 Taylor with
a unique brief. They wanted the kitchen
to seamlessly blend into their open-plan
living space and become an integral part
of the furniture rather than just a practical
cooking zone.
“The couple collect 20th-century
antiques, so that was the starting point
for the mid-century-inspired design,”
explains Darren, Walnut details, including
horizontal handle rails and a chunky
timber breakfast bar echo the wall panels on
either side of the kitchen, while the yellow
island showcases the couples collection of
('larice Cliff ceramics.
The tall cabinetry is encased within a
wall of black, allowing the more utilitarian
aspects, including the Miele ovens and wine
cooler, to fade into the background. Ihc
Liebherr fridge and freezer haw been fully
integrated, as has the Miele dishwasher,
to maintain the uncluttered look. The
splashback references the island and acts
as a hackdrop tor Troika glassware, while
installing a Novy downdraft induction
hob meant there was no need tor overhead
extraction, allowing the couple to showcase

SINGLE PUN + ISLAND
For this new kitchen extension to a rural
home set within National 1 rust woodland in
1 lert ford shire, the brief was to create a unique
design that was sympathetic to the classic
styling of the property with a contemporary
twist. Designed to be stylish yet ultra
practical. John Lewis of Hungerford opted for
a single run of units plus an island, to keep
the working area of the kitchen (cooking and
preparation) over on one side of the room.
“There was a lot to squeeze in, with a
big fridge-freezer, cyc-lcvd ovens, double
pantn; large sink, dishwasher and wine
cooler, as well as lots of storage, but it was
also important that the kitchen wasn't t<M>
cluttered or overpowering,” explains 1’om
Layzell, designer and head of sales at John
lewis of I lungerfbrd. “We kept the worktop
runs as open and light as possible and used
a Bora vented hob on the island so that there
was no need tor a bulky overhead extractor.
This meant the island works as a cooking and
preparation zone but also a sitting, eating and
entertaining space, lhe sink run w as kept
light by swapping w all units for a floating
quartz shelf, while a mirrored splashback
creates the illusion that the worktop is even
deeper than it really is, as well as reflecting
view s into the garden and beyond."
Shaker cabinetry' w as chosen as the core
style, which provides a timelessness that is
in keeping with the property, but the fluted
island, painted in Little Greenes Lamp Black,
creates a real wow moment as you enter the
room, and a contrast to its crisp white walls,
l he simple but dramatic monochrome palette
benefits from brass accents, which bring a
warm, welcoming feel to the room. >

L-SHAPE+ ISLAND
Foodie Nick and his wife Katie called upon 'Inn Brown,
the senior designer at Design Interiors in I love, Sussex,
to assist them w ith their kitchen project. The couple
asked Tim to create a bright and airy social spec for
the family and tor entertaining, as well as a proper
cook’s kitchen tor Nick. Tim took the couple to the
showroom of company Davonport, where they fell in
love with the classic Shaker-style cabinetry.
“From the outset, Nick and Katie wanted dark
cabinets with a light marble top, so although we guided
and assisted their choices, we ran with their initial
request,” explains Tim.
"We chose Davonport s I love cabinetry, which has a
distinct chamfer on the horizontal rails, avoiding any
potential dust traps.” The couple had sourced a cool
ceramic floor tile, so Tim wanted to warm the space
up with brass accents and suggested a green island as
opposed to the owners’ original choice of graphite or
dark blue.
“ l he L-shape layout allowed us to zone the space
with two key features in mind,” explains 'Пт. “The
couple wanted the sink below the window so they
could watch the children play in the garden while
washing up. We then used the length of the I. shape to
create a clear cooking and preparation zone. By keeping
the island clear of any appliances, we were able to create
the three distinct zones in the kitchen and meet the
brief in terms of providing a social space, too.”
The island design w as updated to accommodate
seating at the end as well as along die length in order
to create a more dynamic space when entertaining but
to provide views out the window while seated, l he
long bi-fold windows oxer the sink area open the space
up for barbecues, cleverly connecting the internal and
external cooking and preparation areas, while also
creating a bar area for garden parties. >
GALLEY
J.
Despite being just 15 m sq, this compact
kitchen packs a punch, utilising all the space
to squeeze in as much storage as possible for
a growing family in London's Battersea.
“As the kitchen connects the rest of the
house to the living mom, it was essential
to the couple that all the appliances would
be concealed behind cabinet doors so that
the space wouldn't feel too kitcheny,” says
Merilin Krxik, designer at 1 lolte.
1Ъс longest wall was used as the main
run, with hob and sink, while the back
corner houses double ovens, a fridge-freezer
and offers plenty of storage, plus there is a
pantry made from Jkea carcasses. The units
stretch from floor to ceiling to maximise the
space available and emphasise the height,
with the units partially recessed to visually
increase the sense of floor space. The couple
also wanted space for informal dining, so a
floating bench seat and narrow custom-made
table by Konk was integrated into the design.
1Ъе owners wanted the space to have a
homely fed without clutter, so the neutral
palette and dean-lined cabinetry fit the bill.

the matt laminate doors, while the white-

APPLIANCE
A retro-style fridge-freezer or show-stopping range cooker will add
real wow factor to your kitchen. Available in a raft of colours and
finishes, a standalone piece is becoming a must-have appliance
Words: Sally Smith
How to choose the one for you?
Freestanding appliances can be easily repositioned within your kitchen
layout, plus, you can take them with you if you move, making them
an excellent long-term investment. Range cookers have two or even
three ovens, enabling you to cook multiple dishes simultaneously and
with ease. Available in a wide range of widths, to fit all layouts, many
brands offer custom finishes and colour-matching options. Freestanding
washing machines, meanwhile, offer larger capacities than built-in
models, with up to 12kg, and Amercan-styie fridges offer huge amounts
of chilled and frozen storage.

Latest functions
to look out for
Brands are now offering many more
colour options for their freestanding
models, with some offering the
choice of the full 200 RAL palette. WiFi
connectivity and custom detergent-
dosing technology is pretty much
standard for standalone washing
machines, and dryers now offer easy
iron and refresh steam functions.
Range cookers can include induction
hobs with integrated extraction, dual
fuel and steam options.
*A 11 Ocm-wide model will have ovens,
a grill, hob, and proving drawer,'
explains Robert Stein, product
manager at Rangemaster. ’This allows
you to simultaneously bake, batch
cook, boil, grill, griddle, prove, roast,
simmer, slow cook, stir fry and, at
the same time, keep your food or
crockery warm .'

out on top. It will be much easier to maintain and
repair than a built-in or integrated model because a
freestanding appliance is simpler to access and pull
out to clean, check parts and to repair if something
goes wrong, potentially helping to extend its lifespan
It is worth taking a close look at retailers' demos and
helplines to fully understand what these appliances
can do for you and, wherever possible, make sure
you sign up for extended warranties

Costs
Freestanding washing machines, dryers, fridges and
dishwashers are generally more affordable than built-in
models, but prices vary depending on the brand, so expect
to pay from £600 to £1500 per product. Range cookers and
larger fridge freezers will be more of an investment, with
prices ranging from anything between £1000 and £5000. >

This bedroom, designed by Ben Forster and Paul Longman

straight out of a period drama in a stately home.
W hen designing this space, the aim was to choose a colour
that accentuated die period architecture and original features.
“The Burlington Arcade colour was chosen to envelop the

COVER
HOME
The couple who bought this spacious detached
Yorkshire house in 2()2I had a vision to extend the
ground floor and create a large, light-filled kitchen,
dining and Living space. Working with kitchen
designers The Main Company and the architects at StudioDI I,
they huilt out to the side of the house and created a generous
L-shaped area with a funky geometric glass roof, flooding the
room with light and enhancing the view of the garden. The
brief for Julia Dale, a senior designer at The Main ('ompany
in Thirsk, was: anything goes, so long as die units are painted
in Citrine by Little Greene! In January of this war, the three-
month-long kitchen installation was finally completed, and the
couplecan now enjoy their Arts and ('rafts house to die full.
And what were the thought processes?
We kept it simple. In the extended area below the geometric
roof, we didn’t add too many tall wall cabinets as that would
detract from the impact of the roof. In the old kitchen area and
walk-through space, we made the most of die ceiling height by
using traditional full-height pantry units.
What was the look you wanted to create?
To create an open space that respected the history of the
Victorian house but also worked with the modem elements
of the extension and its geometric roof design. The owners
dreamt of painting the units in Citrine Green and the rest of
the design followed on from there. Today, it is a creative space
where they enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes.
A clever mix of period features,
striking yellow units and a geometric
roof extension has created a unique
kitchen space for modern living
in this Arts and Crafts house
Words Ben Webb Pt / -jrapty Chris Snook
HOME TRUTHS
"It is an Arts and Crafts
property and the kitchen
extension is the only modern
part of the house,' says the
owner. ‘The colours of the
kitchen are influenced by
the painter Lord Leighton's
house in Londons Holland
Park - particularly the silk walls
in the upper stairs' gallery.
We wanted a mix of old and
new furniture, and fitted and
non-fitted kitchen furniture. So,
for example, we incorporated
antique pieces, such as the
kitchen dresser, into the design
from the outset.' >

Crafts property,
KBB I HOMES
How does the geometric roof fit in your design?
'i’he roof really adds to the space and gives it an extra
dimension, making the kitchen striking and unique. As the
sun moves throughout the day the patterned shadows it creates
mow across the walls, worktops and floors.
How did you develop the colour scheme?
I’he owners really wanted the Citrine colour, so we started
from there. Once we had decided to include aged brass in the
drinks station, the choice of hardware followed on from that.
We experimented with a few colours tor the walls and finally
chose Light Bronze (irecn - again from Little (irecne.
Did you consider other colour palettes?
We needed to think wisely about the black and brass balance
because too much black could give more of an industrial ted,
while too much brass could give more of a bling feel.
Why did you choose that selection of units?
Pairing fitted and freestanding units in a kitchen is a great way
to add depth to the room. It is a large kitchen and wv w anted
to keep the feeling of space while creating an interesting focal
point to draw theevvin.so wvwent fora freestanding island,
rather than something fitted. This also allows plenty of room
for both entertaining and food preparation
Can you tell us how you chose the fittings?
While the fittings are often the last thing on your list, they
are key to creating a cohesive and higji-quality feel. With
dark-brown walls anil dark cabinetry, we needed fittings
that provided warmth, and so we opted for brushed gold
and copper detailing, The hardware reflects the light from
the roof exquisite!}; complementing the pendant light and
contemporary wall light above the sink.
Were there any challenges and compromises?
I’he only challenge w as how to work with the geometric roof
design against the feature canop}' that houses the extractor
fan. I’he style of the kitchen lent itself to a built-in canopy
around the range cooker, but we didn’t want to take away from
the detail of the roof. We tried dropping the canop}' dow n and
integrating the extractor, but decided to take it right up to the
roof and keep it simple.
What part of the design do you think has worked
the best and why?
I think the transition w hen moving from die pantry area of
the room into the open area with the statement roof works so
well. You do not lose the traditional fed, but you also know
you have entered a more contemporary spaa* that suits the
demands of a modem day kitchen.
JULIA'S
WORDSOF
WISDOM
• Avoid too many
statement areas. We
didn't want to detract
from the geometric
roof so we added just
one tall area. Similarly,
we added one area of
brass backsplash.
• Maximise space
and create interest.
We embraced the
angled boundary wall,
allowing one side of
the island to follow this
line. We didn't want to
box it off and make it a
square space.
• Think about storage:
consider how you will
use the space and the
storage required for
all your cooking and
dining occasions.

“That must go to our genius interior designer Janet I lanson,
at Studio Lunet, who pushed us out of our comfort zone.
(iuests often comment on how brave we were to go for this bold
colour mix, but we’re honest and tell them we never envisaged
it working - but it just does,” she say's. Anna is chatting from
her much-adored glass window seat, which overlooks the
secluded garden. “Ibis is my favourite spot in the house, but
unfortunately, it’s also everyone else’s!” she laughs.
Moving to the pretty’ commuter town of 1 litchin, after
mating in Sydney, Australia, was an easy decision - Anna was
originally from the area and Alex’s sister lived there. But, after
the arrival of dieir first son in 2018, they quickly outgrew their
first home and began looking fora larger property, moving into
this modern, detached, four-bedroom house in 2019.
Despite it not being the period dream Anna had set her heart
on, Alex had a vision for how they could make it an incredible
family home. “It was a head-over-heart purchase,” admits Anna.
“I would have preferred a Victorian terrace, but it was in the
perfect location and Alex aruld see how reconfiguring the back
of the house would achieve the living space w e wanted.”
Anna and Alex t<и>k time understanding w hat did and didn’t
work for them in the existing layout, such as die four sets of
double doors to the garden, or die unw elcomingdining area

back of the house: a small kitchen, dining n»om, sitting пи im
and study, l he old kitchen w as situated where the dining table
is now, and it w as dark, with the sink facing the wall. I hatal not

WORDS
OF WISDOM
• When it comes to choosing whether
to house the hob or sink on your
island, it depends on how you live as
a family Having the sink on the island
means you need to be tidy with the
dishes, whereas cooking utensils are
often tidied away more quickly once
the cooking is over.
• Working with an interior designer
was worth every penny: Janet even
created a lighting plan. Our builders
couldn't believe how organised we
were - everything ran so smoothly.
• On several elements, such as
the kitchen, flooring, and glass, we
considered the price versus the
benefit and the value it would add to
the house. Several builders told us not
to have the glass corner because we
wouldn’t get our money back, but we
went with our gut and it's one of the
best spots in the house.
• I’d never heard of layered lighting
before, but the mix of wall, ceiling
and table lamps has transformed
the space.

open-plan space where the family could cook, eat, play, and
entertain in one place.
The couple worked with an architect to create the initial
plans, knocking the four rooms together and using half of the
garage for a utility. But, when it came to planning the layout,
they struggled. “We knew we didn’t want die kitchen in the <>ld
spot, but we couldn’t see how else to make it work. Plus, all my
Pinterest boards were full of period homes, so I was finding it
hard to translate these ideas into our 80s property," says Anna.
I’he couple knew they needed expert help, so they checked
out local interior designers and instantly tell for the beautiful
clean lines and playful nature of Studio Lunet’s work “We loved
Janet’s style and, as her home is like ours, it felt like something
we could recreate here. As soon as vw met her, we knew she
understood us,” smiles Anna.
At the top of Anna’s wish list was a window seat, while Alex,
w as fixed on double ovens and a wine fridge. Janet listened to
their wants and needs, then suggested they swap the kitchen
to the back of the house, to maximise views of the garden, anti
sw itch the dining and seating areas over.
When it came to choosing the kitchen, the interior designer
recommended the Norfolk-based company Naked Kitchens
and the couple opted for a streamlined door design that felt
contemporary, yet classic. This was paired w ith a practical
quartz worktop, Iva airing soft gay tones.
Janet’s expert know ledge of colour combinations pushed the
couple beyond dieir Pinterest boards and into more exciting
territory. She suggested pairing Paint 8 Paper Library’s tranc|uil
Glass IV on die kitchen units widi rich leal on the dresser for
drama and impact. “I laving two tones from the same colour
family has helped delineate the two areas, while still ensuring
the whole room feels cohesive," says Anna.
Janet also helped the couple future-proof the space, ensuring
the areas provide what they need now, with two small children,
and w hat they’ll need as their family evolves. Theopen room
dividers, for example, could be replaced with glass doors should
they need a separate TV area when they have a house of teens.
“That’s the magic of this space," says Anna. “It’s really
versatile and can feel like three different rooms, yet the
coherent colours through each area also make our home feel
cosy and intimate.”

• Think about the maintenance of the

I t needed a huge amount of lin e and attention but when
I Karen Cook and husband Stuart’s dream house came on to
I die market in 2018, they knew it liad the potential to become
their forever home. As an interior designer, Karen could see its
amazing potential and immediately got to work planning the
house renovation.
Karen was keen to sort out the partially converted loft nx>m
straight away. 1 lowever, the limitations of a restricted budget
meant that first the couple needed to focus on renovating the
main part of die original house. 'I’he attic project was put on
hold until they had the funds to turn it into a beautiful room
dial flowed with the rest of the space.
What prompted the conversion?
Around 30 sears ago, the previous owners had created a small
attic bedroom w ith \ dux windows, but there wasn’t enough
head height tor it to be a useful spaa*. I’he room w as aoessed
by a steep, dangerous stairease and theoriginal roof had been
replaced w ith concrete tiles that were too heavy for die ceiling.
Plus, w e w ere losing a lot of heat through the top of the house.
'I’he space w as massive and felt ripe for a complete overhaul.
What was your starting point for the design?
(kir home is an 1870s Victorian, detached property and is
listed. I’he space had lots of potential, but it was important
that any changes we made were in ka*ping with the house. \M*
did some research and came across Simon Merrony Architects,
w ho knew the area anil were really creative, Together, we came
up with a plan to make full use of the loft spaa*, creating a
master bedroom with large ensuite bathroom and w alk-in
wardrobe. We chose pitched dormers for the front and back,
so it would look in-keeping from the road. Additionally, we
added a hip-to-gable extension which straightened the slanting
internal wall, and gave us additional head height
How did you design the layout?
'I’he position of the bedroom area w as obvious. I lowever, we
had a large floor area to play with and I spent a lot of time at
the planning stage. And I rejigged the design during the build.

It can lx* hard to gauge the pitch of a ceiling on paper plans,
but once tlx* dormer was in and I could see the usable floor
area, I decided the dressing room could be bigger and we stole
some footage from the bathroom. Initially, we considered
incorporating a bath into the design but ended up opting for a
generous sized shower instead.
Did you incorporate any elements specific
to the space?
I chose neutral shower tiles and went for waterproof MDF
tongue and groove pancll ing on the ensuite walls as a future-
proof'alternative to tiling because it will always be easy to
change the colour scheme. 1 also sourced some oversized
bedside drawers to add hand}’ storage.
How did you choose your colour scheme.
I wanted to inject a light, bright, feminine feel up here because
the rest of our home is quite dark and mood}’, and for me
green and pink is a classic colour combo that feeds into my
low of the Art Deco aesthetic. I also w anted to celebrate the
architectural elements in the room soused colourful botanical
wallpaper on a couple of feature walls to inject some pattern. I
decided to complement the look w ith gold accessories, w hich
add a touch of luxury and w arm up the space.
Any problems along the way?
With any old house there an* always surprises waiting to be
uncovered. We discovered that the front wall of the original
conversion was leaning, meaning it had to be rebuilt to make it
structurally sound, which added to the budget Also, some of
the structural beams were rotten and had to be re-enforced.
Any element you are particularly
pleased with?
Deciding to add air conditioning was a game changer because
loft rooms are hot, and the space is much more enjoyable in
summer. I’he system uses heat pump technolog}, which only
costs around 20 pence per day. I had tlx* air-con grills painted
pink to match the walls and visually they almost disappear.

“It has realised everything and more, in terms
of a soft Scandi-inspired space,” Becca explains.

T he Scandi theme was created with a minimalist
colour palette, which included white, die organic
tones of marble and a blend of both painted and

wood was a serious challenge because it is so variable.
“There were a few touch-and-go moments getting
the wood stain just the right shade of pale oak,”

and the microcement floors, while also incorporating
warm tones and helping achieve a sense of balance.”

avril and Neil loved the idea of creating a family home in
Winstead, East Lindon, because the area has a little of
everything. “It’s a fantastic location," Neil says. “It is only
a short walk to the vibrant high street, and it has amazing
access to the city and to the green spaces in Essex.”
In 2008 the couple took the plunge and bought a traditional
V ictorian house, which retained many of its delightful period features.
It was the perfect launchpad for their vision to create a dynamic and
light-filled home that seamlessly blends the old and the new.
Today, 15 years later, and the transformation is complete. Stare up at
the ceiling in their new kitchen, for example, and you will see beautiful
cornicing painted in a surprising dark tone. Below it, is a sleek line of
timber cupboards and a modern w hite splashback panel. It’s a stylish
and sensitive pairing of both original detailing and modern materials.
The couple did not launch straight into the work and instead took
their time to decide exactly what they needed. “\\V just bedded in for
several years to see how we used the house and then we took our time to
prioritise the work,” Neil recalls. That work included a loft conversion,
plus an extension and a reconfiguration of the downstairs living space.
()nce the loft was completed, they hired Dan Rees, of Rees Architects,
to design die kitchen and dining room extension. It was an easy decision
because Dan shared dieir vision. “I le was the only architect we talked to
w ho was intent on preserving die original features of the house,” says
Neil. “I le wanted to let them shine as part of a modern design."
The objective was to build an extension and then reconfigure the
ground-floor space. The couple were keen to remove the cramped galley
kitchen and create a generous space where die family - who love to
cook and bake - could spend more time together. As the property' is
in a conservation area, each step was carefully considered to ensure it
was approved without need for modifications. The laige kitchen island
is where die family spend most of their time at the w eekend. And the
hidden pantry and ample storage mean kitchen items can be easily
hidden away, so that it can swiftly return to being an uncluttered living
space. “It’s a killer feature,” says Neil. “When we arc not using it as a
kitchen, w e can enjoy the beautiful minimal ist design.”
'lhe pared back design incorporates some very clever ideas: the сл еп
and hob, which are integrated into the kitchen island, have a downdraft
extractor that was engineered to run beneath the floor to the outside.
'Hie chimney' flue in the dining room had to be retained, so a wall of
tall storage cupboards was installed in front of it to house the washing
machine, tumble dryer, fridge-freezer and pantry spare. The central
pantry doors fold out 180’ to reveal a handy preparation area for tea
and coffee, and the lines and shadows created by the chimney above the
cupboards add to the drama by enhancing the light and shade of the
mi >n< K'hn >me a >l< >ur scheme.
lhe subtle colour palette of whites and off-whites, browns and dark
tones is minimalist but never ubercool and cold. (liganic materials
such as wood - which has been used for the floor, stools and cupboards
- add interest and warmth to the design. With its flecks of light and
neutral tones, the black terrazzo of the island breaks up the solidity
of die structure.
In the recess of the breakfast bar, blackened steel lias been lacquered
to avoid corrosion. On the kitchen side of the island, the drawers are
made with matt-black Fenix, a durable smart material that resists
scratches. And it’s designed to last. “We wanted the works to respect the
old house,” says Dan. “We don’t want to follow trends where colours
quickly go in and out of fashion and the kitchen has to be replaced after
five years.”
“We really liked die idea of blurring the lines between die garden
and the extension,” Neil says. 1Ъе new dining area, with its the floor-
to-ceiling glass doors and windows, really does unite the two spaces,
especially on warm days, when die doors are left open. 1 le adds: “We
use die space exacdy as we imagined and it’s really made it much easier
to spend time together cooking, eating, relaxing and socialising." >

• Consider adding underfloor heating if you don't

a-r.
he inspiration began with a vintage pink sink 1 bought on Facebook
Marketplace for £25.1 had just watched Wes Andersons Grand
Hudapcst Hotel, and I wanted to capture that pastel and Art I few
vibe. I also wanted to capture his classic symmetrical style -1 achieved
this with wall lights on cither side of the mim >r and graphic floor tiles.
I needed to create a delicate balance because there are luxurious elements,
like the deep, roll-top bath, matching cast-iron radiator, and rainfall
showerhead. But there’s also a touch of whimsy and a sense of humour with
the fire escape shelves and ice-cream planter.
We w ere renovating the whole house at the time, and 1 took the Ca’ Pietra
thм>r tiles from our delayed kitchen renovation. They work perfectly here,
combining the different colours and also adding a playful vibe, l he finishing
touch was the Miss Print wallpaper, which feels like it was made for this
room, 'lhere are a lot of different patterns in die space, but die main shades,
pink and turquoise, help to avoid overwhelming it.
()ur excellent builder installed the bathrooms main fixtures, making
the installation process so smooth. I painted the hath and radiator myself,
matching their colour to the sink. I took my time doing all the correct primer
and preparation steps in order to make sure the paint will last a long time.
'I’he original bathroom was not a selling point when we bought the house
it had cracked lino flooring, mouldy tiles, and a shower that looked like it was
last switched on in the 1960s. T he bathroom needed to he completely stripped
out and replaced, but somehow, we managed to live with it like that for more
than a year while w e renovated some of the other areas. T he whole house has
a similar colour palette and vibe, so the whimsical bathroom fits in perfectly
with the rest of our home and family.
Its a tiny iwm. just 1.9 m by 1.6 m, so we had to think carefully about the
redesign, to ensure we made the most of the space. We opted tor a smaller than
normal bath to fit under the window and. in fact, its the perfect size tor sitting
up and reading in the bath. T he bathroom was finally functional at 3pm on
(Christmas Eve, so having a deep soak on (Tiristmas morning was the best
present I could have hoped for. Santa came early that year!" CEJ

OF THE MONTH
We investigate the possibilities and practicalities of
concrete to give you the lowdown before you buy
Words: Charlotte Luxtord
While concrete is often associated with the
bigguns of British Brutal ism, such as
the National Theatre and the Barbican,
it has ancient roots. Romans poured the
dome of the Pantheon in concrete, while the I lagia Sophia
mosque in Istanbul appears to defy gravity thanks to concrete
pendentives. The creation of concrete structures was originally
an artisanal process, carrial out by skilled craftspeople using
wooden moulds, into which a mix of sand, cement, gravel and
water would be poured.
This crafting of concrete has seen a resuigence of late, with
many appreciating its raw beauty. I lomeowners are seeking
artisanal designs that aren't limital to grey slabs. And, due
to concrete’s versatility, consumer products are increasingly
available in a range of shapes and colours, from ribbal sinks
to curved worktops, satisfying the growing demand for
personal expression and creativity in residential interiors.
Companies are carving out a niche in the industiy to match
thedemand; Arnolds Kitchens is one of die few companies in
the L’K that casts concrete worktops, in situ, for a completely
tailored finish, while Kast specialises in creating striking
concrete basins, and now even taps.
It’s not just the understated beaut}* of concrete that is
appealing. ‘‘In the wake of rising material costs and shortages,
concrete is a readily available, cost-effective material, which
appeals to clients who prioritise a quick install and less
material wastage,” reveals Ben I layes, director at architecture
practice Unknown Works. For domestic use, the average price
for concrete sits roughly in the region of £85-1110 per cubic
metre, aoording to Issabel Williams, home improvements
expert at Fantastic Services.
“Concrete is a resilient choice for the home, whether it’s
flooring or worktops,” adds Sam I lart, senior designer at
Roundhouse. ‘‘While its porous nature makes it susceptible

to staining and marking, it slum cases unique charm and
durability - and, like marble, it develops a unique patina
over time. Thorough scaling will provide effective protection
against stains, while polishing is a great way to both enhance
aesthetic value and increase its lifespan."
For a seamless, wall-to-wall finish, poured concrete flooring
is an ideal choice, especially for open-plan spaces. It can also
he laid with underfloor heating, so it won’t feel cold during
the chillier months. If your budget is modest, consider large-
format concrete tiles, which are a cheaper option, plus, if you
need to fix a section of damaged floor or underfloor heating,
it’s far easier to take up tiles. It’s worth noting, however, that
concrete flooring can get slippery' when wet, so it’s best to opt
for a porcelain concrete-effect tile with a good anti-slip rating
(R9 or above) in bathrooms.
One game-changing product which has recently been
introduced to the market is resin-based microcement. I land-
applied by a trowel rather than poured like concrete for a
thinner application, microcement has traditionally been
polymer based, making it porous and requiring a sealant to
protect it from water. “The new resin-based microcement is
KM) percent waterproof and a lot more resistant to scratching
and denting,” reveals Tom Mason, managing director of
Microcement Aesthetics. “Typical cement is a standard grey',
straight out of the packet. Microcement is white as standard,
giving us the possibility' to mix it with pigments, providing
endless colour options." Microcement can be used pretty
much anywhere providing the substrate preparation is correct

A liberal dusting of dusky-pink pigmented walls has
breathed new life into this basement-level London
kitchen and barbecue area, created bv Unknown Works
Architecture practice Unknown Works
was tasked widi transforming a dark
Hindoo townhouse into a cohesive
and connected home, working
widi a challenging and steeply sloped garden.
Their solution was to create a complex concrete
retaining-wall arrangement, which encompasses
wall, stairs, seating, outdoor kitchen and
barbecue. The terraced concrete walls and floors
were blended with dusky pink pigments, inspired
by the clients' travels in Mexico, to create a unique
Luis Barragdn4‘sque landscape.
"We saw the need for a concrete retaining wall
and garden stairs as an opportunity to create
a concrete sculpture incorporating these
functions in a more compelling, cohesive
way,” explains lien I layes, director at
Unknown Works. “Mixing materials such
as timber with concrete, to create decorative
elements like furniture and lighting, adds an
elevated look, while the pigmented concrete
offers an added layer of softness.”
Hie project cost £3070 per sq metre. I’he

Words: Rachel Ogden
Kulvinder Singh, 57, a teacher, lives with her husband Manjit, 59, who
is retired due to ill health, in Greater Manchester. Their grown-up
children no longer live at home and, after seven years in their 1930s
property, the couple are now planning a wraparound extension. They
would like some ideas on the best layout for their new kitchen-diner.

THE MOODBOARD
The kitchen is being extended to the rear and to the side, involving
both structural steel and wall removal. It will feature a lantern at the
back and skylights along the side to boost natural daylight. This
will create a rectangular mom measuring appmx 6.4m x 4.7m, with a
ceiling height of 2.55m.
THE WISHLIST
Z The current kitchen is being extended to create a utility room and
downstairs WC/wetroom as well as a larger kitchen. Kulvinder
and Manjit hopes that this will ftitureproof the house, as Manjit
has early onset dementia. They hope to create an island with both
storage and seating, in addition to a dining table for formal meals.

wanted to create a space for Kulvinder
and Manjit to enjoy, perfect for gathering
with loved ones and creating memories
in the hub of the home. It was really
important that the area was accessible and
functional due to Manjits medical needs, but
still offers the wow factor and timeless appeal
every homeowner would I ike when renovating.
Taking into consideration the brief of
darker cabinets and Kulvinder s love for real
wood, 1 haw created a modern, eclectic kitchen
with ample storage and circulation space. The
colour palette features a bold, dark colour
combination of black and orange, inspired by
her mood board.
It was preferable to have plenty of
cupboards, rather than open shelving, to
allow for everything to be stowed out of sight
I ’w included a single larder unit next to the
fridge freezer, which offers a useful place to
store smaller appliances as well as dry goods.
Due to Manjits ill heath, the kitchen
features a multitude of safer appliances
such as an induction hob, lye-lcwl own and
microwave, and multifunctional instant
boiling water tap, which eliminates the need
for a kettle < >n the surface. T he Silestone
quartz worktop, in lagoon, contrasts against
the dark cabinets. The same surface continues
into the utility to tie the spaces together.
In the utility, there’s room forthe washing
machine and tumble dryer as wel I as more
cabinets. 1 haw designed a functional yet
aesthetically pleasing space, with a compact
sink, a run of worksurface, and space to
hang clothes. T here’s also a tall cupboard to
accommodate the ironing board and mop.
Finally, I’ve added a striking handcrafted
wooden table to the dining area to add
character and warmth - it’s a timeless piece
that will last for years to come. The addition
of the м J id wood I iving edge dining table ties
togedter nicely with the burnt orange stools.
T he kitchen island and designated dining
area allow for both casual and formal dining,
creating a usable spaa* whether it’s quick bite,
or an evening hosting friends or family"
Ж PLANS
1 Island unit An induction hob with a
built-in extractor negates the need for
overhead ducting.
2 Wall units LEDs below the cabinetry
illuminate the worksurface below.
3 Entertainment Kulvinder s wishlist TV
is located next to the dining area so
that it can be watched while sitting
at the table or the breakfast bar.
4 Storage The island is home to a
large chunk of storage, thanks to twin
cupboards and drawers for pans,
crockery and cutlery.

VERDICT:
“I loved this design, in particular the symmetry' of the units on cither side of the island, the
American-style fridge freezer in the centre of the units and the positioning of the dining table. I
was undecided between a freestanding dining table and banquette seating but, having seen both
options in the designs, 1 feel that the freestanding table works better in the space.
I especially like the glazed wall cabinets, as I can see how they' help to break up the expanse of
dark units. The suggestions for safer appliances arc very useful - for example, I hadn’t considered
an all-in-one Quooker tap, but will now explore this option. In the utility room, 1 would prefer a
bigger sink than the one in the plan, but I liked all the other elements. Overall, I find this design
aesthetically pleasing and it provides all the elements to make the kitchen a functional space.” >

rom the initial brief, I knew
independence had to be at the heart
of this project Kulvinder requested
a timeless design, with charcoal or
black cabinets, but maintaining the natural
light within the space. I haw chosen elegant
Shaker-style cabinetry - Florence, from our
Christophermark English collection - in
(iraphite, with a lighter shade of wall units to
keep the kitchen light and airy'. The contrasting
20mm Carrara quartz worktop and copper
handles complement each other beautifully.
An island large enough for seating was
essential. I lousing both the hob and an area
for seating makes this the focal point. Its oak
breakfast bar is not only practical but adds
a layer of warmth and another texture to the
owrall design.
The appliances and other fittings l’ve chosen
haw been carefolly considered, ensuring they
will aid in Manjits freedom in the kitchen.
T he Elica Nikolatesla FIT wnted hob remows
the need for an owrhead extractor, which
Manjit could knock his head on, as well as an
induction surface that remows the worry' of
injury should the surface be touched.
For the cooling, I have chosen the Blomberg
SS'134551 fridge and matching FNT3454I
freezer to ensure maximum storage spare for
both fresh and frozen food. Both appliances
haw a door alarm, so you are notified if they'’re
left ajar. Another useful example is the Blanco
Evol-S Pro tap. It not only offers filtered
water, hut there is also an intuitiw measuring
function to deliwr the exact amount of w ater

VERDICT:
‘This is another great design that has given me a lot to think about, as I had not previously
considered this layout. The use of different colours for the base and wall units is interesting and
I especially like the oak breakfast baron the island and the brass handles because they both add
nice touches of warmth to the kitchen. The positioning of the island unit allows a lovely view' of
the garden while cooking, too.
Again, the suggestions for safer appliances with accessibility features are very practical. The use
of lighter-coloured units in the compact utility' room makes it feel far more spacious. Both designs
fulfilled my brief for an accessible and timeless kitchen, and my final project will include some
elements from each plan.” go

WHEN VISITING
SHOWROOMS
Try before you buy is vital. Visiting a kitchen or bathroom store is
the key time for you to touch and try out a company s products - and
essential before parting w ith your hard-earned cash
Entering the door of an immaculate showroom can
often feel a little intimidating, even oft-putting.
You're likely to spot stackloads of upmarket
brochures, a vase of seasonal flowers on a kitchen
counter, posh handwash and plentiful folded towels by
basins. Yet, despite the formal setting, independent retailers
and designers arc usually down to earth and welcoming.
l ake a wander around the showroom and speak to die
retailer, but give yourself space to take it all in. Open the
cupboards, run your hand along the surfaces and look at the
small details. Pick up samples of worktops or brassware;
knock on cupboard doors and carcasses to check their
quality. If there are working bathroom displays, play with
the showers and taps to see how well the water flows.
Ijong-establishcd retailer Dave Jarvis, managing director
of Albion Bathrooms Kitchens Electricals, says that he
likes to give his customers plenty of time to take in what’s
in the showroom but he keeps a close eye on them, so that
if they look in any way confused, he’s ready to step in and
offer a hand. Designers may ask you if you would like some
coffee or if you want to sit down and have a chat; they do
that to be friendly and to start building trust. "Personalities
sell kitchens as well as a good service and quality prices,"
says Stefan Bomok, founder of Cu Cucinc.
lire designer may take you around the space, and
talk you through some technical aspects or demonstrate
products. Good designers will try to establish a rapport,
rather than go in for a hard sell. Justine Bullock, co-owner
of Welsh design company The Tap End says: "We find that
the best way to engage with new clients is to really know
your stuff, and not to be too pushy." A project should be
a considered purchase and not something you should feel
pressured into; if the company is overly persuasive or says
they' will offer a discount if you put a deposit on today, run!
W ell, maybe respectfully w alk away.
What do you need to bring to your first show-room visit?
firstly, a fairly good idea of the dimensions of your space.
Precise numbers will lx* more important at the site visit,
when someone comes to measure up, but initially a rough
idea is okay.
"Photos say more than words," says Martina Landhed,
founder and creative director from (Jxfordshire-based
InStil Design. She recommends to come armed with plenty'
of images of your current space and to have a specific
budget in mind. And bring along a list of must-haves plus
a separate wishlist of elements that are not so vital. Prepare
lots of questions and ideas and be ready to talk it over and
collaborate with the retailer.
Your first visit will focus on you rather than the room,
so don't be surprised if you spend more time talking about
how you use your home rather than specific furniture,
finishes and colours. Joanna Geddes, design director at
Scotland's luxury bespoke kitchen company JS Geddes,
explains her initial client appointments: "We want to find
out more about their lifestyle, the comings and goings of
their household, family, hobbies and pets."
Depending on the size of project, you could be working
with designers for any-thing from two to IS months and so
the relationship needs to work. You must feel comfortable
w ith the designers and have confidence in the projects they
arc selling, so take your time, have a discerning eye and
don't rush your showroom visits. CZl

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?
Going to your first design consultation is an exerting time, so here is a little
check list of the things you will need. But always ask in advance if the company
requires you to bring anything specific...
Illustration: iStock.com / zuperia
Measurements of your space: Most
designers will carry out a home visit to
measure up properly, but you will need to
bring a rough guide of the dimensions.
Plans: It you have proper architects'
plans, then take them along. Alternatively,
make a sketch of the current layout, with
details of any doors and windows.
Photos: Take photos of the room from
different angles to get a total view of the
work that needs to be done in the space.
Inspiration: A Pinterest board and
Instagram photos are always very useful.
Create a list of must-haves: Work out
what you really need and then make a
separate wishlist of less important items.
Arrive with questions: Ask your designer
about everything from timelines to specific
products' specifications; remember, there
are no stupid questions.

FINDING YOUR
PERFECT
THRONE
The WC is probably the most
tunctional part ot your bathroom
and needs meticulous thought
and attention before you buy
Words: Vicki Evans
Before delving into the intricacies of shapes,
sizes and features, let's talk about the three
main types of toilet design. Close-coupled
is the most common option, where the pan
and cistern are joined, and the toilet is freestanding.
Wall-hung and back-to-wall toilets have concealed
plumbing, while the former is fixed to the wall and
latter sits on the floor. And don't forget about the
flush plate: it now comes in a wide variety of sizes,
colours and finishes, to match your brassware.
Those are your three main options, but where
should you begin? ’Start by assessing the amount
of space you have,’ advises Emma Mottram, brand
marketing manager at Laufen. ’If you're limited
on space, consider a close-coupled model with
a slender cistern that sits close to the wall, to save
precious inches. Alternatively, you can factor in a
stud wall and install a frame behind it for a wall-hung
WC. This is an excellent option for small bathrooms,
as wall-hung WCs float above the floor, creating the
illusion of more space.’
Toilets are often placed discreetly, purposefully
concealed for aesthetic and privacy considerations
They can be hidden behind half walls, for example,
or tucked into the corner of a bathroom
Ideally, the toilet should blend harmoniously with
your other sanitaryware, so that it doesn't draw
attention. Ben Bryden, sales and marketing director
of Rak Ceramics UK, suggests that you consider
your choice of WC carefully ’It's an essential part of
the room,’ he says ’But it also needs to fit, style-wise,

with the other sanitaryware to blend in more. But, in
a cloakroom, where the toilet takes centre stage,
you can consider picking a more distinctive design
In terms of contemporary toilet trends, there are
now so many new colours for WCs, perfect whether
you want to embrace sleek minimalism or prefer
a more traditional design. New shapes have also
emerged, with a rise in square and soft, rounded
pans designed to match the other items in your
bathroom. And, if you are ecologically conscious,
you'll be happy to hear that there have been huge
strides in technology, meaning the function of toilets
has improved and they now use far less water
A properly thought out toilet installation can
future-proof your home and make it more suitable
for all family members, says Amanda Paine,
marketing director for VitrA Bathrooms UK. ’It can be
as simple as installing a WC at a comfortable height,
with a hidden in-wall frame. Alternatively, consider
a shower toilet, which can, for some, provide lasting
independence when it comes to personal hygiene,
washing with warm water and drying with warm air.'
Shower toilets are now standard in Asia, especially
in Japan, and they are becoming more fashionable
in the UK. With adjustable water temperature and
pressure, heated seats, a dryer, deodoriser and
automatic open-and-close function, they have
finally made it on to the UK market. No longer just
for the super rich, you, too, can elevate your pan.
Above all else you want form and function
PLUMBING AND PIPING
Where you place the toilet might be slightly out of
your hands. For example, wall-hung toilets need
to be placed on sturdy walls that can support the
weight of the internal frame. Wall-hung toilets have
increased in popularity but require more planning
and thought than their dose-coupled cousins. Ask
your designer or installer to find out what works
best for your bathroom design.
You'll also need to consider the plumbing of your
current bathroom. Aiming die soil pipe can be
expensive. By keeping the toilet in situ you’ll awid
extra building work and keqi crests down.
‘"I’he toilet is usually the element that controls
the layout of die bathroom, simply because of the
waste pipe,” advises Adam Mosley, director of
Thomas ('rapper.
“Most waste pipes are external and the toilet
will usually feed through the w all. I low ex er, the
practicalities of old houses or solid walls might
dictate the position of the waste pipe. Whatever die
case, it is vital diat you allow enough fall tor waste
to w ash aw’av.”

PROJECT
YOU ASKED
“How can I maximise storage
in my tiny awkward kitchen?”
When dealing with a small or unusual sized room, talk to
your kitchen designer about how to get the most out of the
available space, says Eleanor 1 lughes from Sigma 3 Kitchens
ELEANOR HUGHES, DESIGN
CONSULTANT, SIGMA 3 KITCHENS
My kitchen is squashed into an awkward
corner of my open-plan living room.
I low’ can I make this space work harder? у у
Й Most important, it is essential to
collaborate closely with your kitchen
Jr I designer. You will optimiseyour
л - T' kitchen space by discussing your
J I lifestyle, hobbies, grocery-shopping
habits and frequency of entertaining
guests. Identify the items you need to store, such as
cookware, small appliances and food.
If your kitchen area is limited, you need to make
the m< >st < >f yt >ur c< >rner space. Increase y< »ur n >< >m’s
overall storage by including a corner pantry, which
provides better storage options, particularly for
bulk}' items. 'Illis means you can maximise your
storage potential without giving up too much space.
And who wouldn’t want a walk-in pantry anyway?
Another option is L-shaped comer cabinets
with flyover shelving, These are perfect for storing
bulk) items, such as children's cereal boxes or larger
kitchen appliances - like an air fryer, for example.
When planning your kitchen layout, consider
the available space: if you don’t have enough room
for an island, it’s best to avoid forcing one in and,
instead, opt for a kitchen peninsular. This option
can maximise cabinet space and create a smooth
design flow.
A kitchen peninsular serves a similar purpose
to an island but can lx* seamlessly integrated into a
cabinet run without taking up too much floor space.
Not only docs it add visual appeal but also provides
die opportunity to create an extra seating area, such
as a built-in breakfast bar. This adds more interest
to the design and creates a safe space where children
can sit while you cook, but it can also break up the
heights within the kitchen.
If you benefit from natural light, you are on to a
winner. You can also add impact and a wow factor £
w ith integrated lighting, under the worktop anil £
cabinet lights, for example. Mixing and matching a
bold or dark colour with a lighter, complementary |
colour can help to break up the space and bring some о
light touches to the design. Your eyes are drawn to £
dark areas, so being able to break them up with a c
back t<me will create a beautiful balance.
Finally, don’t be afraid to go bold w ith colour. 5
Even when dealing w idi a small space, this doesn’t g
mean bright or dark shades are off the table. GZ3 $
