Shortly after, taekwondo made its debut worldwide. Today, taekwondo is the most
popular martial art worldwide.
At that time, the martial art was called taekkyeon. It was practiced throughout Korean
history up until modern times. In 1955, the name was changed to taekwondo.
Then, in 1959, the Korean Taekwondo Association was formed.
It is a tradition here at the World Championships to give the audience a brief
introduction about taekwondo history and culture.
