Аля писала письмо маме. Она очень старалась написать
хорошо, но всё шло шиворот-навыворот: буквы не
слушались, падали, менялись местами и ни за что не хотели
браться за руки, точно все друг с другом перессорились.
Ну просто наказание!
Alya was writing a letter to her mother. She was doing her
best to write neatly, but everything went topsy-turvy: the
letters would not obey her, they fell flat, changed places,
refused to hold each other's hands. What a mess they made
of her letter!

Вдруг прямо на середину страницы выскочила буква А.
Она казалась очень расстроенной. — "Что с тобой
случилось?" — спросила Аля.
Suddenly the letter "A" jumped up right in the middle of the
page. It looked totally upset. "What is the matter with you ?"
asked Alya.

— Кляксич! — воскликнула буква А. — Отвратительный
Кляксич пробрался в Азбуку! Он ненавидит буквы и
хочет их всех заменить кляксами! Меня он выгнал из
Азбуки. И ещё сказал: "Букву Л я запру под замок, а
букву Я запрячу. Тогда Аля не сможет подписать своё
письмо маме.
"It's that Mr. Ink-Blot!" cried the "A". "This loathsome Mr.
Ink-Blot got into the ABC-book and now he wants to turn out
all the letters and replace them by blots." And he also said:
"I'll lock up the letter' JF in such a place that no one will find
it, and I am going to hide the letter "Я" forever. So Alya will
never be able to sign her letter."

— Знаю, знаю! — вдруг закричала Аля. — Я сейчас
возьму папину резинку. Мы отправимся в Азбуку,
разыщем Кляксича и сотрём его.
"Oh, I know what we can do!" exclaimed Alya. "I'll take
father's eraser and we'll go to the ABC-book. We'll find that
old Mr. Ink-Blot, and rub him off!"

Взявшись за руки, Аля и буква А направились прямо в
Азбуку. Надо же бороться с противным Кляксичем!
Holding each other's hands, Alya and the "A" started
towards the ABC-book. They simply had to get rid of Mr.
Ink-Blot!

У самого входа дорогу им преградила добродушная с
виду буква Б. — "Берите белые бублики и баранки.
Быстрее. А то не пропущу в Азбуку", — сказала буква Б, не
трогаясь с места.
At the entrance, a friendly-looking letter "Б" blocked their
way. "Please buy some baked buns and biscuits," demanded
the letter "Б". "And make haste: otherwise I am not doing to
let you into the ABC-book," added the "Б", refusing to
budge.

Пришлось покупать бублики. Они купили их целую
строчку, вот такую... И тогда буква Б отступила.
So they simply had to buy the buns. They bought a whole
bag. Like this... And then the letter "Б" stepped aside.

За воротами зеленел лужок. На траве паслись двоеточия.
За ними, щёлкая кнутом, ходил вопросительный знак.
Behind the gates there was a green meadow. Lots of colons
were grazing on the meadow, and a question-mark was
herding them, cracking his whip.

— " Ты не видал Кляксича?" — спросила у него буква А.
— "Кляксича? — Вопросительный знак почесал в
затылке. — Как же. Кляксича-то видел. Он уехал на поезде".
"Have you seen Mr. Ink-Blot by any chance?" asked the
letter "A". "Mr. Ink-Blot?" The question-mark scratched the
back of his head. "Well, of course I have seen him. He caught
the train and went off somewhere."

На вокзале буква В в кондукторской фуражке с красным
донышком покрикивала на пассажиров. — "В вагоны! В
вагоны! Входите в вагоны! Вы в восьмой вагон? —
спросила она у Али — Ваши вещи? "— Але некогда было
удивляться. Аля показала строчку с бубликами.
At the station, the letter "В" (mind, don't confuse it with the
English "B"), with a railway conductor's red cap on, was
urging the passengers into the carriage. "Take your seats,
please. Are you looking for carriage number eight? This way,
please. Where is your luggage?" Alva had no time to wonder
why the guard was asking for luggage instead of checking
the tickets. She simply produced the bag of buns.

В вагоне они уселись поудобнее. Колёса застучали по
шпалам. За окнами замелькали домики и деревья.
They entered the carriage and made themselves
comfortable. The train moved and the wheels said "tock -
tock" as they rolled along. Houses and trees were passing by,
visible through the windows.

Но вдруг поезд со скрежетом затормозил и остановился.
Пассажиры высыпали из вагонов. Дальше пути не было!
Это Кляксич (кто же ещё?) унёс рельсы, разобрал шпалы
и даже спилил все деревья!
Suddenly the brakes screamed and the train came to a
standstill. The passengers poured out of the carriages. There
were no tracks in front of the train. Mr. Ink-Blot (who else
could it be?) had stolen the rails, torn up the cross-ties, and
even cut down all the trees!

Пришлось браться за ремонт путей! Укладывать шпалы.
Заодно починить домики и насадить побольше ёлочек:
дороге нужна лесозащитная полоса!
So the first thing for everyone to do was try to fix the railway.
It was necessary to lay new cross-ties and rails, repair the
houses and plant new trees. The railway has to have a tree
line to protect it against snow and wind.

Наконец поезд подошёл к перрону. Аля и буква А вышли
из вагона. Уже смеркалось. Горели фонари.
At last the train arrived at the station. Alya and the letter "A"
got out of their carriage. It was growing dark. The street
lights were already burning.

Они решили постучать в первый попавшийся дом. Это
был голубой домик с голубыми гардинами на окнах. На
подоконниках в глиняных горшочках цвела герань. Из
раскрытых окон до прохожих доносилось громкое пение.
They decided to knock at the very first house they came to.
It was a blue house with blue shutters on the windows. On
the window sills, geraniums in blue clay pots were in
blossom. The windows were open. Passers-by could hear
someone singing in a loud voice.

Ну, конечно, в этом доме жила буква Г. Буква Г была в
голубом халате и голубых домашних туфлях. — "Кляк-
сич? — переспросила она, когда узнала, о чём идёт речь.
— Может, я и расскажу вам, где Кляксич, только сначала
решите задачу.
No doubt it was the house of the letter "Г". The letter "Г"
had on a blue dressing gown and blue slippers. "Mr. Ink-
Blot?" asked T on learning what was the matter. "Well, I
might tell you where he is. But first you have to solve a
problem."

Если от поезда отстал один пассажир и от другого поезда
отстал один пассажир, то сколько всего отстало
пассажиров?" — Аля поняла, что Г не переспоришь, и
моментально написала 1+1=2. Это же была самая пустяковая задача
на свете.
"Listen. If one passenger missed his train, and another
passenger missed his train too, how many passengers missed
their trains altogether?" Alya thought: "We have to know
where Mr. Ink-Blot is. It's better not to argue. "In a twinkling
of an eye she wrote: 1 + 1 = 2. The easiest problem in the
whole world!

— Глубоко ошибаетесь, — сказала буква Г. Ответ не
сходится.
"You are profoundly mistaken," said the letter "Г". "Your
answer is wrong."

Им пришлось уйти, так ничего и не выяснив. Когда они
спускались с голубого крылечка, буква Г высунулась из
окошка и закричала им вдогонку " — Ноль! В ответе
будет ноль! Если пассажир отстал от поезда, то он уже не
пассажир, а растяпа! Понятно вам?
Alya and the letter "A" had to leave, having gained absolutely
nothing. When they were going down the steps of the blue
porch, the letter "Г" leaned out of the window and shouted
after them: "Zero. The answer is zero: If a passenger misses
his train, he is no passenger at all. He's a dolt! That's what
he is. Right?"

Настала самая настоящая ночь. Огни в окнах погасли.
Только в одном, самом высоком доме горело крошечное
окошечко под самой крышей," — Пойдём, попросимся
переночевать" — предложила Аля. — "Пойдём, —
сказала буква А.
— Там живёт буква Д. Её зовут Добрая Дуня.
Now night fell. The lights in the windows went out. Only one
small window was lit, very high above, just under the roof.
"Let's go upstairs and ask if we can spend the night," said
Alya. "Well, why not," answered "A". "The letter 'Д' lives
there. Her name is Kindhearted Dunya."

Они открыли старую скрипучую дверь и двинулись вверх
по тёмной лестнице, отсчитывая этажи. 1-й этаж. 2-й,
3-й, 4-й, 5-й, 6-й, 7-й, 8-й, 9-й, 10-й.
They opened the creaky old door and started up the dark
staircase, counting the floors: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th,
8th, 9th, 10th.

"Здравствуй, А, душечка, обрадовалась Дуня, — Кого
это ты привела ко мне в гости?" — Аля пожала
пухленькую ручку Доброй Дуни. И назвала себя: Аля" —Дуня
тоже пожала Алину руку, улыбнулась и запела песенку.
"Welcome, welcome, my dear 'A'," Dunya said joyfully.
"Whom did you bring to see me?" Alya introduced herself
and they shook hands Dunya's hand felt warm and soft.
Dunya smiled and started to sing a very strange song.

Alya wondered what the song meant, but she felt too shy to
ask. (Mind, pay attention to the first letters of each line!)

— Кляксич утром был здесь. — сказала Дуня. — Грозил
всем буквам, что заменит их кляксами, если они впустят
букву А обратно в Азбуку. Он грозился отправиться к
букве Л, чтобы схватить её и засадить под замок.
"Mr. Ink-Blot was here this morning," Dunya said. "He
threatened to replace all the letters in the ABC-book with
Mr. Ink-Blots if they let the letter 'A' come back. He also said
that he was going to capture the letter 'Л' and lock it up
somewhere."

— Отдохните немного, поешьте, я сейчас угощу вас
дыней. — Аля и буква А прилегли на диван.
"Have a little rest," Dunya said. "I'll bring you a nice piece
of melon." Alya and the letter "A" settled down on a sofa.

Дуня отправилась в кухню. Она стучала тарелками и
ножами и тихонечко напевала странную песню.
Dunya went to the kitchen, and then came the clatter of
dishes and knives. Dunya was singing another curious song.

Рано утром Аля и буква А прошли прямо через поле к
лесу. На опушке леса стояла старая, завалившаяся набок
избушка. В ней жили две смешные и добрые старушки Е
и Ё. Путники не стали заглядывать к Е и Ё и прошли
мимо.
Early in the morning Alya and the letter "A" crossed a field
and made straight for the forest. At the edge of the forest they
came across a shabby old log house. It belonged to two funny
and kind old ladies, the letter "E" and "Ё". The travelers
didn't look in, they simply passed it by.

Они всё шли и шли по лесу, пока не увидели очень
странное сооружение. Это была землянка, но вход в неё
был замаскирован, двери они не нашли. — "Кто здесь
живёт?" — спросила Аля громко. — "Мы", — ответили
ей два голоса одновременно.
They walked on and on through the forest. At last they came
across a very strange dwelling. It looked like a mud-hut, but
the entrance to it was hidden and they couldn't find the door.
"Who lives here?" Alya asked in a loud voice. "We do,"
answered two voices simultaneously.

— "Кто вы такие?" — "Мы не знаем, — ответили голоса.
— Мы каждый день меняемся. Один день мы журавль и
заяц,
"And who might you be?" "We don't know," the voices
answered. "We change each day. One day we are a Crane
and a Hare."

Alya understood at last that these were the letters "3" and
"Ж". "Could you possibly tell us how find the letter 'Л'?"

Ичите направо. Отсчитайте пять шагов. Потом ичите
налево, считайте в обратном порядке. Потом от пяти
ёлочек — опять направо. Ёлочки вам придётся
нарисовать, потому что наш лес — лиственный. Отыщите в
заборе калитку. Там скажут.
"Turn to the right. Count five steps. Then turn to the left.
And count backwards. At five small fir-trees turn to the right
once more. You'll have to draw the fir-trees yourselves, for
no fir-trees grow in our forest. Find the gate in the fence.
You'll be told there what you want to know."

— Спасибо, — сказала Аля странным буквам, и,
повернувшись направо, она вместе с буквой А принялась
считать: 1,2,3,4,5, потом они повернули налево и опять
начали считать: 5,4,3,2,1.
"Thank you," said Alya to these strange letters. She turned
to the right and started counting: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The letter "A"
joined her. They both turned to the left and counted
backwards: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Then they drew five fir-trees.

И вот путешественники остановились перед калиткой в
высоком тесовом заборе.
At last the travelers were in front of a gate in a tall fence made
of planks.

За забором стоял просторный бревенчатый дом. Там
жили: буква И, буква Ы и буква Й. И с Ы целыми днями
сидели на террасе и спорили, кто из них главнее.
Behind the fence was a large spacious house built of logs. It
belonged to three letters: "И", "Ы" and "Й". "И" and "Ы"
had been sitting all day long on the porch, arguing over which
of them was the more important.

А когда им надоедало ссориться, они распевали свою
любимую песенку.
When they grew tired of arguing, they would sing their
favorite song.

A large old samovar was whistling on the table. The table was
laid for breakfast.

За чаем выяснилось, что Кляксич вместе с Помаркой и
Опиской проходил тут ещё вечером. Тимофей понял из
их разговора, что они отправились на левый берег Чер-
нилки к букве Л и собираются её схватить.
At breakfast, Alya and letter "A" learned that Mr. Ink-Blot,
together with his friend Pomarka (which means "blur") and
Opiska (which means "slip of the pen"), had passed by the
house the night before. The letter "Й", called "ТИМОФЕЙ"
(Timothy in English), heard them saying that they meant to
make their way to the left bank of the river Ink where the
letter "Л" lived, and capture it.

Разузнав дорогу на левый берег Чернилки и
поблагодарив хозяев, Аля и буква А двинулись в путь.
Alya and the letter "A" asked how to get to the left bank of
the river Ink and started off.

можно было перейти не левый берег, не было. Вчера здесь
был ураган. Видно, мост снесло ураганом.
Soon they caught sight of the river Ink. There was no bridge;
a hurricane had destroyed it the day before.

Буква А стала кричать, чтобы кто-нибудь с того берега
пригнал лодку. Но никто не откликнулся. — Давай
вытряхнем бублики, — скомандовала она. — Мы
перекинем строку с берега на берег и по ней пройдём, как по
мосту.
The letter "A" started shouting, asking for someone to bring
a boat from the opposite bank. But no one answered. "Let's
break out the buns," said the letter "A". "We'll make a bridge
out of them."

Перебравшись через реку, они пустились бегом.
Добежали до маленького домика буквы Л. Но что это? Дверь
открыта настежь. В доме — никого. И только сидит в
будке и даже не лает собачка Ленточка. Чьи-то следы
ведут от калитки влево.
They crossed the river and began to run. Soon they reached
the small house which belonged to the letter "Л". But...
what's this? The door was standing wide open. And there
was no one to be seen in the house. '\JT"s dog was still sitting
quietly in his kennel, and somebody's footprints led to the
left, and out of the yard.

Аля и буква А пошли по следам. Следы привели к сараю,
сложенному из толстенных брёвен. У дверей сарая
сидели вооружённые до зубов буква К и буква М. Аля сразу
обо всём догадалась. Конечно, они стерегут в сарае
беднягу Л.
Alya and the letter "A" followed the footprints. They brought
them to a barn built of very thick logs. At the barn door the
letters "K" and "M" sat motionless. Both were armed to the
teeth. It didn't take long for Alya to guess what was going on.
It was obvious that "K" and "M" were standing guard over
poor letter "Л"; he was being kept prisoner in his own barn.

"Куда?" — крикнула буква К. — "Нам нужно видеть Л,
— сказала Аля. — Эта буква нужна мне, чтобы подписать
письмо". — И она сделала ещё шаг к сараю.
"Halt!" shouted the letter "К". "But I must see 'Л' ", Alya
replied. "I need the letter "Л" to sign my letter." And she
took one step nearer to the door.

раму. У Киры косы." — "Что ты бредишь? Лучше открой
1верь", — сказала Аля. — "Нельзя, — сурово отвечала
буква К. — Косы хороши. Кира мала."
The letter "К" snatched out a pistol. "Halt: Kira was washing
the windows. Kira has plaits."
"Are you crazy?" said Alya. "You'd better open the door!"
"It is forbidden", said "K" severely. "The plaits are nice.
Kira is small."

— "Что это с ней?" — спросила Аля у М. — "Эта буква
К долго работала в букваре. А теперь букварь написали
новый. Она и обиделась. Она считает что тот букварь был
лучше. Вот и бормочет слова, которые были в букваре на
её странице.
"What is the matter with 'К'?" Alya asked "M". *"K' worked
go for a long time in an ABC-book. And now a new edition is
being published. 'K' got offended. He thinks the old ABC-
book was better. Therefore he constantly mumbles the words
that were printed on its page."

— "Давай выпустим ни в чём не повинную букву Л, а в
сарай запрём эту злую букву К" — "Можно, — сказала
буква М, — я не злая. Мёд. Малина. Мармелад..."
"Let's set the poor, innocent 'Л' free," Alya proposed. "Let's
lock up this nasty old 'K' instead, can't we?" "Well, all right,
said "M". "I am not mean at all. Honey. Raspberries.
Marmalade..."

И не успела злющая буква К оглянуться, как оказалась в
сарае, а буква Л радостно выбежала навстречу Але. Из
сарая неслись негодующие крики: "Каша! Куры! Кира
ушла в кино!" — Но их никто уже не слушал.
Before the letter "К" knew what was happening, he found
himself in the barn, and the happy letter "Л" ran through the
open door to Alya. The door was then locked. From behind
the door "K"'s voice kept coming: "Gruel! Chickens! Kira has
gone to the cinema!" But no one paid any attention to him.

Уговорив букву М постеречь К, все трое двинулись
дальше на поиски Кляксича и на выручку буквы Я. Аля и
буква А шли впереди, а за ними следом, едва поспевая,
бежала буква Л. Кляксич не велел её кормить, пока она
была взаперти, и она очень ослабела.
They persuaded the letter "M" to keep watch on "K" and
then the three of then together started off in search of Mr.
Ink-Blot. They still had to rescue the letter "Я", too Alya and
the letter "A" were marching ahead, but "Л" was constantly
lagging behind. Mr. Ink-Blot hadn't allowed him to be given
food, and so he had grown quite weak.

Возле дороги был вкопан огромный столб, а к столбу была
прибита стрелка, тоже огромная, и на ней написано
"НОП" " — "Это Научно-Опытный Пункт", — пояснила
буква А. — "А что там делают?" — "Ставят опыты. Там
работают Н, О и П".
By the road stood a tall pole. And to this pole a huge arrow
was fastened. It bore an inscription which said "НОП". "It
is an experimental scientific station," the letter "A"
explained. "And what do they do there?" "They're doing
experiments: the letters "H", "O" and "П" are working
there."

Стрелки с НОПами стали попадаться всё чаще, и вскоре
путники увидели серый кирпичный дом со светлыми
окнами во всю стену.
Arrows with "Н О n'"s now caught their eyes at each step.
And very soon they saw a grey brick building with bright
windows reaching from the ground up to the roof.

Они вошли. Аккуратненькая вахтёрша — точка с
запятой — провела их в лабораторию. Там что-то кипело и
шипело на спиртовках, что-то булькало в пробирках.
They entered the building. A neatly dressed attendant, a
semicolon, showed them into the laboratory.
There, things was boiling and hissing on gas-burners and
were gurgling in test-tubes.

— "Извините..." — начала было Аля. — "Тсс! —

"Excuse me...," Alya began. "Hush!" hissed "H", "O" and
"П". All three were in white overalls and white caps.
"Silence! An experiment is going on!"

— "Что вы тут делаете?" — не выдержала Аля. — "Тсс!
— зашикали на неё все трое. — Мы переплавляем слова."
"But what are you doing there?" asked Alya impatiently.
"Hush!" hissed all the three in chorus. "We are smelting
letters."

— "Готово! — Они подскочили к какой-то колбе, и буква
Н торжественно объявила: "Опыт прошёл блестяще.
Послушайте".
"Ready!" The three letters ran up to a retort and the letter
"H" announced solemnly: "The experiment is a complete
success. Listen."

Что же это вы делаете? Вы же заменяете своими буквами
другие буквы! Вас что, Кляксич подговорил, что ли? —
Тсс! — зашикали опять все три буквы в белых халатах.
— Тсс! Мы продолжаем опыт."
"Wait a minute. Stop it!" "A" couldn't help shouting. "What
are you doing? You are replacing perfectly good letters by
putting your own in their places. Did Mr. Ink-Blot persuade

going to find out anything here. Perhaps we'd better go and
see the letter "P". He might be able to tell us something." "I
doubt it," said the letter "A" with a deep sigh. "But why?"

здорово нарычала на него: "Рррр!".
"When Mr. Ink-Blot started to behave so awfully in the
ABC-book, "P", being a very good dog, growled at him:

А он написал на её будке — "сабачка Розачка". И она
теперь совсем разболелась. Она всегда болеет, когда
слово "собачка" пишут с ошибкой.
And he wrote on his kennel "САБАЧКА РОЗАЧКА". And
"P" fell ill. He always falls ill when the word "СОБАКА" is
misspelled.

— "Здрра-сс-те! — вдруг донеслось откуда-то сверху. —
Здрассте, я здесь, здесь!" — На заборе сидела буква С —
сорока —" Не знаешь ли ты что-нибудь про Кляксича?
— спросила буква А. — Куда он девался, не слыхала-ли
ты чего?"
"Hello!" somebody was calling from the top of a fence. On
the fence the letter "C", a magpie, was perching. "Do you by
any chance know anything about Mr. Ink-Blot?" asked the
letter "A". "Where might he be?"

Оказалось, что сорока других слов, сроме как на С,
произносить не умеет. Ну что тут было делать? —"А может
нам буква Т что-нибудь скажет?" с надеждой спросила
Аля. — "Т — хорошая буква, только она Тютя".
Unfortunately, it turned out that the magpie, the letter "C",
can say only words beginning with "C"! What could they do
now? "Perhaps the letter *T* could tell us something news?"
Alya said hopeful. "No. "T" is nice letter. Only he is a gawk."

Она не успела объяснить Але, что значит "Тютя", потому
что кто-то стал кричать и звать букву А. Это была буква
У. Она неслась к ним через мостовую, не обращая
внимания на красный свет. — "Ну, наконец-то! — кричала она.
— Наконец-то я тебя разыскала.
The letter "A" had no time to explain what a "gawk" is.
Someone was calling the letter "A" in a loud voice. It
happened to be the letter "У", which was hastily crossing the
road, ignoring the red light. "At last! At last I have found you,
dearest 'A'," shouted "У".

Азбуку тайком, ведь Кляксич выгнал меня, разве ты не
знаешь?
"Sh-sh-sh, be quiet," the letter "A" said. "I've come back to
the ABC-book secretly. Mr. Ink-Blot has turned me out.
Didn't you know that?"

— "Этот Кляксич, отвратительный, злой Кляксич
рассердился на моего друга филина Федю", — всхлипнула
буква У. — "За что же?" — спросила Аля. — "За то, что
он не хотел позволить ему спрятать в своём дупле букву
Я. Пойдём со мной в лес, пожалуйста, поищем Федю."
"Oh, that abominable, wicked Mr. Ink-Blot! He got furious
with my friend Fedya, the letter 'Ф'. He's an eagle-owl, you
know," said the letter "У", sobbing. "But why?" Alya asked.
"Because Fedya wouldn't let him hide the letter "Я" in his
hollow. Please, let's go to the forest together and look for
Fedya."

В Федином лесу росло много старых дуплистых дубов.
Густая листва заслоняла солнце. — "Ay, ay!" —
крикнули буквы А и У в зелёный полумрак Фединого леса. —
"Бу-бу," — донеслось до них еле слышно из-за толстых
раскидистых дубов.
In Vedas forest there were lots of old hollow oaks. Thick
foliage kept out the light." "Ay! Halloo!" shouted the
letters "A" and "У" into the green twilight of Vedas forest.
"Ho, Ho!" came the answer, barely audible from behind the
thick trunks of the tall oak-trees.

Вдруг буква Л, которая устало тащилась позади всех,
увидела надпись, вырезанную на коре дуба: "тен". И на
другом дубе тоже "тен". И ещё на одном — "нилиф". Что
означают эти таинственные надписи?
Suddenly the letter "Л", slowly dragging himself behind the
others, caught sight of an inscription on one of the trunks. It
said "TEE". And another oak had the same inscription:
"TEE". And the next one too. And one of the oak-trunks had
an inscription which ran "НИЛИФ". What could these
mysterious inscriptions mean?

Все принялись осматривать дубы, стучать по стволам.
Дубы были толстые. Сучков внизу небыло. Влезть на дуб,
чтобы осмотреть вершину, было почти невозможно. И
потом — на который из них лезть?
Everybody started examining the oak-trees, and knocking on
the trunks. The oaks were thick. There were no branches
down low. To climb up the oak and examine the top of the
tree was almost impossible. And which tree should they
climb up?

— вдруг закричала Аля. — Давайте встанем друг к другу
на плечи, а ты, буква У, лезь на самый верх и ищи дупло.
Alya ran up to the oak which bore the inscription
"НИЛИФ". "Pve got it!" cried Alya suddenly. "Let's stand on
each other's shoulders. And you, dear letter "У", climb to
the top and look for a hollow."

растут здесь! Дупло! Оно было загорожено ветками! И
замазано чернилами!
"Oh!" the letter "У" exclaimed. "These branches are falling
down. They're not growing here! Look, here is a hollow! It
was blocked by branches and daubed by ink!"

Somebody was rushing head over heels towards them. It was
the cunning History, the letter "X", which looks the same
whether he stands on his feet or hands.

то запылённого скверика с жиденькими кустами и
выгоревшими клумбами. Устало опустились на скамейку. На
соседнюю лавочку тут же плюхнулись буквы Ч и Ц.
The sun was high in the sky. It was getting hot. They reached
a small public garden in a little town. Thin bushes and flower
beds with withered flowers were covered with dust. They
sank on a bench to have some rest. The same moment the
letters "Ц" and "4" flopped down on a bench next to them.

отдельнео, пока кто-нибудь не напишет букву Ш тысячу
раз.
The letter "Щ" came to the garden. She burst into tears. "My
poor sister "Ш" got into trouble," she said. "Mr. Ink-Blot
dragged her hooks apart because she would not betray the
letter 'Я'. He bewitched my sister and now her hooks will
stay apart until someone writes the letter "Ш" a thousand
times."

— "Не убивайся так, — сказала Аля. — У тебя наберётся
достаточно друзей, чтобы разрушить колдовство. Не
знаешь ли ты, где сейчас буква Я?" — "Не знаю" — "Что ж
прощай", — сказала Аля.
"Don't be so sad," Alya said. "You have enough friends to
help you to break the spell. And do you happen to know
where the letter 'Я' might be now?" "Unfortunately not."
"Good-bye then, stay well," said Alya.

Э. У буквы Э был маленький собственный домик, крытый
черепицей.
So they started towards the last pages of the ABC-book,
where the letter "Э" lived in her own little house with a tiled
roof.

At that time a friend was visiting "Э". It was the letter "Ю"
whose name was Julia-with a-skirt-on, for she never put on
dresses.

— Не трудитесь объяснять, я знаю, зачем вы пришли, —
сказала буква Э. — Всё, что мне известно, я вам открою.
Но, к сожалению, я знаю не так уж много.
"Don't take the trouble to explain," said "Э". "I know why
you are here. I'll share with you all the information I have.
I'm afraid there is not much to tell."

Букву Я прятало слово "заяц". Когда Кляксич всё-таки
догадался, где буква Я, он погнался за зайцем. Ему бы
никогда не удалось догнать зайца, но тот бежал так
быстро, что буква Я не сумела удержаться при такой
скорости и выскочила из слова. Тут Кляксич её и схватил!
"The word 'ЗАЯЦ' the hare, was hiding the letter "Я". When
Mr. Ink-Blot guessed at last where it was, he started chasing
the hare. He could never catch it, but the hare was running
so fast that the letter 'Я' could not hold on and was left
behind."

Он составил какую-то заколдованную надпись, которую
невозможно прочесть. Кто прочтёт, тот и освободит
букву Я. Мы с Юлей переписали надпись, но расшифровать
не могли. — Все молча глядели на неё. Аля сделалась
совсем мрачной. Буква А заплакала.
"Mr. Ink-Blot composed a sort of unreadable enchanted
inscription. The one who will be able to read it will free the
letter 'Я'. Julian and myself copied the inscription but could
not decipher it." All of them were looking at the inscription
in silence. The letter "A" started crying.

Зеркало!" — трижды прокричала она и выпорхнула в

Suddenly a bird came fluttering in through the open window.
It was the letter "3". "A mirror! A mirror! A mirror!" chirped
the bird and was gone.

Их так много и все они умные. Они догадаются".
"What does the bird mean by a mirror? Why a mirror? What
do we want with a mirror?" repeated the letter "A" over and
again. "What are we going to do?" asked the letter "Э". "I
have no idea," replied the letter "A" sullenly. "Oh! The
children can help us!" Alya said. "There are lots of them
reading this book. And they are all very clever. They'll be
able to guess what it all means."

Ну вот, теперь, когда всё так благополучно кончилось...
Что? Конечно, ребята догадались, как прочесть
заколдованную надпись, и буква Я освободилась из своего
страшного плена. И Аля написала такое письмо:
Well, now that everything has ended so happily... Why, of
course the children found out how to read the enchanted
inscription, and the letter "Я" got out of its horrible dungeon.
And Alya wrote and signed her letter to her mother at last.

Всё это прекрасно. Но куда девался злой Кляксич?
Сумела ли Аля победить его? Всем очень хотелось бы, чтобы
это было так. Но... Кляксича изловить не удалось. Он
сбежал. Он теперь бегает из тетрадки в тетрадку и строит
людям всякие пакости исподтишка.
Well, this is all very good. But what has become of the wicked
Mr. Ink-Blot? Was Alya able to catch up with him? Everyone
would like it to be this way. But... It was impossible to catch
him. And now he is running from notebook to notebook,
plotting against people and trying to do harm in secret.
