Ask Judie
Q. How do I decide which color to use where when the chart reads [o^| ?
Susan S.
A. Generally you will be making a 1/4 stitch of "x" in the upper right comer of the stitch area and a 1/4 stitch of "o" in the lower left comer of the stitch area and a 1/2 stitch of a backstitch color (may be "x" color, "o" color, or a third color) from upper left to lower right to form a complete cross stitch in that area. Sometimes one quarter of the stitch area will be left unstitched.
On rare occasions a backstitch does not complete the cross stitch and you must make the decision of which color gets the 1/4 stitch and which color gets the 3/4 stitch. The dominant or "top" color over the forehead, the collar over the neck, the cuff over the wrist, the hand over/holding the pen, the pen atop the paper, the paper on the desk, etc., etc., etc..
Q. How can I adapt a straight border pattern I like to fit the comer of a breadcover?
Elizabeth L.
A. An inexpensive rectangular pocket mirror from the five-and-ten will do the trick for you. Set it on its side edge at a 45 degree angle across the straight pattern and move it back and forth until you see in the mirror a "turn" of the design that you find pleasing. Copy what you see onto graph paper, using the symbols used in the pattern. Stitch as usual, setting into the comer of the breadcover with about an inch between the design and

SUNBURST SALAD
2 pounds carrots, sliced 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 1 red or green pepper, thinly sliced 1 6 oz. package Chinese pea pods, thawed
2 Tbsp, scallions, chopped
Cook carrots about 10 minutes. If you use the slicing blade on a food processor for cutting the carrots, cook only 5 minutes. Cool carrots and then mix the onion, pepper, pea pods and scallions.
Marinade:
1 (10 oz.) can tomato soup
1 clove garlic
1/4 tsp. pepper
3/4 tsp. paprika
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2/3 sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp. prepared mustard 3/4 tsp celery seed
Mix the above ingredients together in blender. Pour over vegetable mixture, stir and refrigerate 6 hours or longer. Serves 8-10.
For a spicier version, use Campbell’s Zesty Tomato soup, and omit the garlic, pepper and paprika.
