E DI T OR’ S L E T T E R onestly, putting together any kind of magazine is 99% computer screens, coffee cups, and late nights (we thrive on a deadline!) and 1% flitting around doing fancy things. This issue’s front cover shoot in THE WHITSUNDAYS definitely fell into the latter. We were lucky enough to enjoy the dazzling sunshine that draws couples and honeymooners here year-round. Such a dream, and you can see it all in our 18-page Whitsundays feature and fashion editorial, starting on p.72. Back in balmy Brisbane, we’re reminded that an important season is almost upon us (stand down Santa, it’s not about you). Yep, Christmas/New Year is peak time for proposals. And who better to pop the first Champagne cork than one of our own: staff writer Natasha Pavez. There was a collective QB squeal of delight when Tash and Sam announced their engagement era. Congrats! And on the topic of new beginnings, we have 2024 in our sights this issue. Clearly, we don’t have a crystal ball — but we do have a few favourite looks, trends and details that are coming in hot for the new year and beyond. Have fun choosing your faves in our fashion and jewellery wrap-up (p.30) and our 24 trends for 2024 on p.47 . One of the big stories is the rise of minimalism as a touchstone in the modern wedding aesthetic. We celebrate this elegant direction in our style shoot on p.36, perfect for couples exploring a clean and contemporary look with a touch of the Med. Finally, if there’s one thing you take away from this letter, it’s a reminder to check out our giveaways on p.17. We have 13 awesome prizes up for grabs (including romantic dining, luxury stays and a complete entertainment package worth $3,399!) so remember, you have to be in it to WIN IT! Good luck! C ON F E T T I R I N G M E 2024 edition Because QB loves nothing more than a sparkly sticky-beak (we’re magpies when it comes to rings), here are five of our favourite engagement and wedding ring trends to watch for in the year ahead. 1. 2. 1. SLENDER SHAPES “While round diamonds will always be timeless, people are experimenting more with shapes,” says Lauren from Xennox Diamonds. “There has been a strong return to oval and marquise engagement rings. The oval is soft and, while still classic, leans towards someone more modern and fashionable.” Makes sense when you consider Hailey Bieber, Vanessa Hudgens and Blake Lively all sport this style. “The marquise is strong and bold and chosen by the confident and designer bride,” says Lauren. Exhibit A: Victoria Beckham, whose three-carat marquise from David kicked off her expansive diamond ring collection. 3. 2. CREATIVE BANDS Gone are the days when wedding bands were just an afterthought. Today’s curved and ‘tiara’ shapes and custom sparklers feel more like the main event. “Tiara-style wedding rings are a stunning choice for oval and marquise-shaped engagement rings - they showcase the beautiful lines of these shapes,” says Lauren. “The use of different-sized diamonds as well as interesting cuts such as radiant, baguettes and oval diamonds is also on the rise when it comes to wedding bands.” Grooms are enjoying the styleup too, with custom designs, wider bands, and showers of diamonds. 4. 5. 30 Summer 23-24
L2, 141 Queen Street Mall, Brisbane, QLD, 4000 info@xennoxdiamonds.com.au | www.xennoxdiamonds.com.au
C ON F E T T I 8. 6. 3. 7. 4. Look out for statement side stones, particularly in pear and baguette shapes, and romantic multistone rings. “I’m noticing toi et moi rings (meaning “you and me” and featuring two statement stones) gaining popularity.” says Macy from Clayfield Jewellery. Look to celebs from Jackie Kennedy to Megan Fox for how to rock this style. “Also trilogy and solitaire rings, mainly in oval, marquise, and pear shapes,” says Macy. Good to know: the trilogy style can have sweet sentimental meaning, representing a couple’s past, present and future. Meghan Markle wears a trilogy style and one of the stones comes from Princess Diana’s personal jewellery collection. SPOILED FOR CHOICE Labratory-grown diamonds have been huge in 2023 and this looks set to continue as the number of global ‘growers’ explodes. As a sustainable and cost-effective choice, quality lab diamonds are certainly having their time in the sun. But Lauren from Xennox Diamonds (the first to bring ‘labs’ to Brisbane) is also noticing a move back to ethical, mined diamonds. “Mined diamonds are also finally coming down in price after skyrocketing during those pesky covid years,” she explains. The takeaway: whether you choose lab or mined diamonds, it’s a great time to buy! Just be sure to source the highest quality you can afford for a piece you’ll cherish forever. 9. 5. 10. WILL IS BE 1, 2 OR 3? COLOUR ME HAPPY While diamonds are still shining bright, some couples are colouring outside the lines. Statement gems such as emeralds, sapphires, and pink or yellow diamonds are giving rings the royal treatment, with heirloom pieces often included in the mix. Think grandma’s pearls for your toi et moi ring. Mixing metals is also on brief, especially in wedding bands, with gold making a strong return. “Anything in yellow gold seems to be the favourite right now,” notes Macy from Clayfield Jewellery. 1. Oval diamond ring, Clayfield Jewellery 2. Dora wedding band, available from Clayfield Jewellery and Xennox Diamonds 3. Tiara wedding band, Xennox Diamonds 4. Diamond bands, Xennox Diamonds 5. Marquise diamond ring, Xennox Diamonds 6. Starlight Lyra Oval combo, Xennox Diamonds 7. Trilogy diamond ring, Clayfield Jewellery 8. Pear diamond ring with side diamonds, Clayfield Jewellery 9. ST Y L I NG M O D E R N minimalism Europe comes to the Sunshine Coast with this creative collaboration: a pared-back yet utterly luxurious styled shoot, photographed at Havana Haus, Coolum Beach. efined and luxe with a nod to Mediterranean style, the shoot represents creative freedom for photographer and designer Laura Reger. Based in Germany (with family ties in Italy), Laura is currently letting her imagination run free in Australia. “In Europe I shoot around 30 weddings a year, photograph for brands and companies, and work as a graphic designer … so there is not much time for creative freedom and style finding,” she says. “So when I organised this styled shoot, my only wish was: simplicity! I love the phrase ‘less is more’.” The mood captures Laura’s own aesthetic but also the modern Luxe Minimalism wedding movement making a (very chic) splash for 2023/2024. “My style is little color, a lot of surface, less details, and I orient myself in photography and editing to one color concept: Black, white, beige, brown,” explains Laura. “That’s where my heart goes. With my Italian roots, I wanted to bring a Mediterranean style to the shoot too.” Laura indulged her love of bespoke architecture at Havana Haus, a stunning new space just five minutes from the ocean in Coolum Beach. “Havana Haus offers so much variety in the interior and detail in the light,” notes Laura. “Owner Chloe Hutchinson has designed a R unique treasure here.” Underpinned by a soothing palette, the photographs celebrate a dream team of Sunshine Coast creatives and a trio of models chosen for their diversity and natural movement. “How the team came together was an absolute blessing,” says Laura. “I contacted Judy because she designs simple, but also so individual and exciting, dresses. She is so talented. And so the team grew through more referrals. That’s what I love about this industry. We support each other.” Bringing the polish were local HMUA Niki Taylor (sass + niki) and Maddy (Madeliene J Makeup). “They are amazing professionals who know exactly what fits the concept and bring the best vibes to the set,” says Laura. Enlisting Chloe from Lovebird Weddings for decor styling and stationery was key to bringing the concept to life. “I roughly described my idea and Chloe got to the heart of it so well,” says Laura. The tablescape captures the mood with its crisp whites, neutrals and hints of black (love those Wave chairs) while florals from Mondo Floral Designs bring a lush decadence. “The modern and unique floral concept Terrianne conjured up in a flash was breathtaking,” says Laura.” If this is “less”, we want more. queenslandbrides.com.au 35

TR ENDS 13. SPARKLE DETAILS While clean and simple is definitely de rigueur for many brides, there is a shower of glittering fairy dust filtering through for the new year. Look out for metallic details in gowns, shœs and stationery. 14. EUROPEAN ACCENTS With honeymooners flooding back to Italy and France, couples are also looking to bring a little la dolce vita spirit to their weddings. We’re seeing mood boards saturated with sprawling private estates, manicured lawns, gelato tones, olive trees, and towers of macarons and croquembouche. J’adore. CUSTOM GROOMS Why should brides have all the fun? Modern grooms are choosing custom suits, personal details, and fun second looks (think party jacket). We’re also witnessing the rise of the white dinner jacket: it gives James Bond/ Old Hollywood and lets the groom shine among his men. 20. LUXE ELOPEMENTS Micro-weddings and luxury modern elopements (with two besties/witnesses to tow) have transcended the pandemic as a couple-fave. No stress and all the emotion. Liz & Tim. Planning apps, zoom calls with vendors, and online gift registries are just some of the ways couples are going virtual. They’re also continuing to scroll, pin and share their way to weddingday style. Pinterest has over one billion pins dedicated to weddings (and counting), so if you feel like falling down a fondant-wrapped rabbit hole, start here. Desi & Sergio at The Greek Club Corrina Louise Photography Gina. Photo: Evernew Studio Liz and her girls. Marina Emerald Photography 22. PRETTY IN PINK We don’t need Barbie to tell us bridesmaids love pink. From whisper-soft marshmallow to blush, rose and peony, this everromantic hue will continue to be a hue of choice for morning-of sets 23. WEDDING WHITE and sweet bridal party looks. Everywhere we look, the luxe minimalist æsthetic is signalling a rise in all-white everything: cakes, bouquets, bridesmaid gowns. Think bridal gowns in unadorned swathes of creamy silk and add depth with black tuxes or a flash of gold. 24. SUSTAINABLE WEDDINGS Hopefully this is no trend. But the discussion around sustainable wedding choices is getting louder. From upscaling florals and decor to swapping out single-use elements to donating instead of gifting to sourcing locally, there are endless ways to make your wedding footprint that little bit lighter. queenslandbrides.com.au 59

1 0 T H I N G S T O D O ju s t b e fo r e ‘I d o’ Just before you walk down the aisle, cherish the moment (and calm any nerves) with these last-minute ideas 1. SLOW IT DOWN This is a morning to savour so try not to spend it micromanaging. Trust your timeline (always allow a bit of extra time for each task) and months of planning. Let your team do their thing. And create a ‘call list’ for questions other people can solve. Then concentrate on the bigger picture, you’re getting married today! 2. SNACK ON SOMETHING Adrenaline and Champagne will get you so far, but eating breakfast is the best way to ensure you have the energy to take on a big day. Whether it’s a tropical fruit plate, a protein bar or a basket of pastries, make sure you and your crew grab a snack. 3. WRITE IT DOWN Emotions are bound to be running high so why not sit yourself down and write a letter to your love, or even to newlywed self, about how you’re feeling. Right. Now. 4. CHECK YOUR DAY-OF PLAN Checking off a list can be calming, especially when it includes simple things like turning off your phone or going over your vows. A day-of emergency kit, (Pandol, pins, band-aids, etc.) will also give you peace of mind. 5. SHOWER & SPRITZ before your glam squad arrives. Then you can spritz on a cloud of your favourite scent after hair & makeup. 6. PLAY YOUR FAVOURITE SONG Highly recommend a morning-of playlist to get the energy humming or to calm the nerves. Have your favourite hype song cued for just before you leave. 7. LOOK IN THE MIRROR Now that your bridal look has fully come together, take a moment to enjoy it! And use this moment to check you have everything, especially if you’ve taken off your ring at any point or left your earrings until the last minute. 8. HAVE A DRINK We’re talking water here. Nerves, vows, and weather can all make you feel a little parched. Hydrate early so you also have time to duck into the powder room. 9. HUG YOUR MUM Or dad. Or nan. Or whoever deserves an extra special thanks in that moment when it’s all coming together. 10. BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT You’re walking down the aisle, not running for a plane so take a big breath, exhale, and cherish the moment as you make your way to your love. Make time for a quick shower or even a relaxing bath queenslandbrides.com.au 61

A DV IC E A G R O O M ’ S best advice Planning a four-day wedding celebration is bound to give you a few insights! Groom Haisam kindly shares his top tips for reducing stress and maximising joy along the road to ‘we do.’ BUDGET & PLANNING Begin by setting a budget and crafting a plan. However, always bear in mind that weddings often involve unexpected costs, last-minute changes, and unforeseen requirements. Thus, it’s prudent to overestimate, solicit multiple quotes, and maintain a well-organised approach. But above all, cultivate adaptability. Your role isn’t solely to execute a flawless plan but to find solutions when challenges arise. These are lessons we hope every couple carries into their marriage. SUPPORTING EACH OTHER Understand that during the wedding planning process, at times you’ll both be stretched thin, financially and emotionally. This is perfectly normal. The key is to be there for one another, offering unwavering support. You’re both navigating uncharted territory, and it might be the first major project you’ll tackle as a couple. So, be courageous and venture forth hand in hand, armed with a map of your shared dreams. BALANCING ACT Recognise that in relationships, weddings, and life in general, the scales are rarely perfectly balanced at 50/50. It’s more akin to 80/20 one day and 20/80 the next. Sometimes, one person may contribute more in a particular area, and that’s entirely acceptable. The harmony arises from the blend of your efforts. While the overall relationship may strive for equality, individual scenarios seldom do. Embrace this dynamic and understand that you both are trying your best. BREATHE TOGETHER When the wedding day approaches, remind each other to breathe. The wedding will happen, regardless of any hiccups along the way. In those moments, reaffirm your shared desire to spend the rest of your lives together. This mutual reminder can provide solace and strength. DE ST I NAT ION L OV E H O L I D AY W E D D I N G arrival guide You may have already aced the planning portion of your event but what happens when you actually touch down? Here’s a handy checklist for the days just before “we do.” 1. ARRIVE EARLY Ideally, you’ll want to arrive before your guests to familiarise yourselves with the location and take care of any pre-wedding legalities or paperwork. 2. MEET & GREET Excitement! You can finally meet the vendors and creatives who have helped bring your event together. 3. DELIVER WELCOME BAGS Your venue can have these delivered to your guests’ rooms as a thoughtful surprise. Or pass them out at your welcome party. 4. GET ACQUAINTED Stroll around the spaces that will become yours for the day/night, especially the ceremony site, access pathways, and reception area. 5. HOST A WELCOME PARTY With everyone high on anticipation and holiday vibes, it’s time to thank your guests for joining you with poolside cocktails or a relaxed dinnerwith-a-view. 6. KEEP IT SAFE Does your best man have eyes on the wedding bands or will they be locked in your hotel safe? And are you vows backed up on your phone? A simple plan means a stress-free morning. 7. GET STEAMY Gowns are usually meticulously packed with a view to hang and go. Arrange for crushier fabrics to be lightly steamed. 8. TRIAL IT If time permits, have a hair & makeup trial to ensure everyone is on the same page with your look. 9. PAMPER TIME Gather your girls (and boys) for manis/pedis or book a massage. 10. SOAK IT UP It’s really happening! Carve out an hour to take in the moment from the pool, the beach or your villa. W E DDI NG S // BR I SBA N E DESI & SERGIO G R E E K glamour A classic meets luxe wedding was on the cards for this couple whose love story seemed fated to happen. WORDS NATASHA PAVEZ VENUE THE GREEK CLUB PHOTOGRAPHY CORRINA LOUISE PHOTO esi and Sergio had known of each other their whole lives, but it wasn’t until years down the track that they began to really cross paths and, eventually, fall in love. Sergio would often drop past Desi’s workplace on his lunch breaks — conveniently, Desi laughs. “We eventually ran into each other on the Gold Coast during a Christmas break, and Sergio followed me up later that day, asking to go on our first official date. The rest is history!” When it came time for Sergio to pop the question, he chose Desi’s birthday and a sunset picnic back where he asked her on their first date. “I was hangry and blissfully unaware of what was about to go down,” Desi remembers. “The sun was setting on the beach and, in the middle of summer, Sergio put on a puffer jacket. I was still totally unaware of his plans.” Sergio proposed with the ring that was tucked inside that jacket, and of course, Desi said yes. “It’s still our favourite beach!” says the bride. The pair exchanged vows at St George Greek Orthodox Church on a blooming spring day. Desi looked every inch the princess bride as she walked down the aisle in darb bridal couture. “It was my childhood dream!” she says of the couture creation. Sergio, meanwhile, was dapper in a classic black suit. The ceremony featured “all the usual Greek traditions,” says Desi, honouring the couple’s shared heritage. The newlyweds then zipped across Brisbane with their bridal party and photographer, stopping for city skyline backdrops and a much-needed gelato fix. When it came time to party, all roads led to The Greek Club. The venue was a natural choice, with the bride noting that a guest list of 320 calls for a special space, both in terms D of capacity and catering expertise. “We have been to many weddings at The Greek Club and have always been happy with the food and atmosphere,” she says. The Greek Club’s Grand Ballroom was the perfect size to host the couple’s cherished friends and family, and was styled beautifully, just as Desi and Sergio dreamed. Candlelight and a luxe canopy of fresh blooms and glittering chandeliers brought an intimate feel to the room, transporting guests to a private wonderland. “My inspiration was 100% from Pinterest and Instagram, who styled the event herself with invaluable on-the-day support from Celebrating in Style. “We also adored our florist, Fontana Floral, and our photographer, Corrina Louse,” says Desi. “They absolutely nailed it!” Despite the myriad friends and family who came to celebrate, Desi and Sergio managed to sneak in a moment, just the two of them, in the most unlikely place: the dancefloor. They might have been surround by their loved ones as they took to the floor for their first dance as husband and wife, but for the couple, it felt like they were the only two people in the room. “It was our favourite part of the day,” Desi recalls. After the wedding whirlwind, Desi and Sergio escaped to Daydream Island in The Whitsundays for an “amazing” honeymoon, before settling back into life together, now as Mr and Mrs. They plan for their marriage to continue as it started: spending time with their loved ones, supporting each other, and always having fun. And their advice for couples? “Compromise, compassion, and empathy are crucial,” Desi advises. “Be best friends and do what makes you happy.” queenslandbrides.com.au 95

W E DDI NG S // BR I SBA N E LIZ & TIM P I C T U R E of elegance Hosted in Brisbane’s cultural heartland, this wedding’s elegant aesthetic pairs classic themes with heartfelt personal touches. . . WORDS NICOLE DEUBLE VENUE QAGOMA PHOTOGRAPHY MARINA EMERALD PHOTOGRAPHY hile avid travellers Liz and Tim spend much of their free time on day trips and coastal escapes, the pair looked closer to home when planning their elegant nuptials for 130. “We knew we wanted the wedding to feel easy for our guests,” says Liz. “And being born and raised in Brisbane, it felt natural to find a venue in the city. The State Library and QAGOMA (in particular, the Watermall where the reception was held) almost fell into our laps and felt too good to be true.” The setting proved the perfect expression of this love story: a classic romance (Tim even asked Liz’s parents permission to propose) with a dash of modern love (they first met through Tinder). It also speaks to the close ties with friends and family, who were also on hand to celebrate the couple’s engagement. Kudos to the groom who chose a weekend close to the couple’s anniversary to pop the question. Liz didn’t suspect the beautiful lunch at SameSame and weekend away at the Sofitel for a proposal. In fact, she even tried to raincheck due to a busy work cycle! The ring was burning a hole in Tim’s pocket though and Liz says his “beautiful words of love” made them both cry. Immediate family was waiting in the lobby bar for a celebratory Champagne, with Liz’s parents and Tim’s sister jetting in from Perth and Melbourne for the occasion. “Thank goodness she said yes,” was the joke of the day — but there was never a question with these two. When it comes to a wedding aesthetic, we can’t help but think Old Hollywood vibes here. “We wanted a classic, timeless style,” explains Liz. “Key elements like Tim’s off-white tuxedo jacket, the 1950s and 1960s post-ceremony jazz, my sheer gloves and the English roses in our floral W design felt like such enduring motifs for a wedding that could be placed in 1950, 1990 or 2023!” The bride also included a special ‘something old’: her late Nanna’s perfume, Rose Essentielle by Bvlgari (which is now discontinued). “I wanted to ensure my Nanna’s presence was with me all day,” she says. After a stunning ceremony among the treetops of the State Library of Queensland, the newlyweds took advantage of the Cultural Centre’s incredible backdrops and city vistas for their photocall. GOMA’s Watermall then kept the wow moments coming with guests treated to a delicious reception dinner among the gallery’s breathtaking artworks. After some initial nerves about her train, Liz counts the first dance as one of her favourite moments. With their venue’s shimmering water feature setting the mood and the bride’s gorgeous KWH gown flowing around them, the couple swirled, twirled and dipped their way into forever. With the confetti settled, Liz and Tim are endlessly thankful to their dream team for helping create so many precious memories in just one day. “All our vendors were absolutely incredible and we would recommend each of them a thousand times over,” says Liz, who gives a special shoutout to her maid-of-honour Sally Hungerford who designed all the stationery and signage. “It is so meaningful that our stationery was personally designed for us as an expression of who we are as a couple.” There was also a personal connection among the guests with Tim’s stepmother Olivia, owner of Paddington boutique Living Silk, helping to create the perfect outfits for many of the guests. The couple managed to carve out time for a sun-soaked Gold Coast minimoon, but a big adventure is still on the horizon: winter in Europe, including a stop at Germany’s Christmas markets. So romantic. queenslandbrides.com.au 99

W E DDI NG S // NO O S A MELODY & NATHAN Tr o p i c a l luxe These glorious Noosa nuptials celebrate a couple’s deep connection to family, one another, and the sea. WORDS NICOLE DEUBLE PHOTOGRAPHY LIFE AND LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE VENUE NOOSA BOATHOUSE M elody and Nathan are already living the dream in their coastal home town of Bargara in central Queensland (where they first met) along with two dogs, two cats and a cherished network of friends and family. But their hearts also belong to another seaside locale — the Sushine Coast enclave of Noosa where the pair spend Christmas each year and where Nathan “finally” proposed. “It was nine years in the making,” laughs Melody. “I was the one who initiated our first kiss, the first one to say I love you, the one who initiated moving in together ... well, you get the point. So, when it came to the proposal, I was extremely stubborn in the fact that it was Nathan’s turn. Better late than never, right?” With the couple’s shared love of the sea, a beach backdrop was a natural choice for the ceremony, and Laguna Grove in their beloved Noosa fit the bill perfectly. As luck would have it, locking in a reception venue was equally easy-breezy. “If you took one step into the Noosa Boathouse you’d understand why. It is the Noosa dream”, says Melody. “It sits right on the waterfront with the most beautiful views of the Noosa River. It was perfect.” Fusing the raw beauty of the beach with a luxurious wedding feel for their 95 guests inspired the couple’s Tropical Luxe theme. They enlisted stylist and coordinator Melinda from First Class Functions to help create just the right vibe. “Melinda was fantastic,” says Melody. “No job was too big or too small, and she literally brought our vision to life.” Soft neutrals and pops of emerald foliage flowed through the styling to the bridesmaid looks and Nathan’s suit while the bride wore a gorgeous Dune gown from Madi Lane Bridal. Melody was sold on the fit and the sparkly tulle underlay but ended up adding a couple of custom touches including a floaty tulle ‘wings’ to make it her own. Blessed with beautiful Sunshine Coast weather, Melody queenslandbrides.co and Nathan pledged their vows and basked in the love of friends and family. Finally Mr & Mrs! The newly minted couple enjoyed a playful bridal party photo session and a jaunt along the Noosa River before joining guests for an epic sunset, perfectly showcased at the Noosa Boathouse. Then it was all about savouring the moment (and the delicious food), and a boogie with their whole crew. Fortune was on their side, from the glorious sunshine to their team of local professionals. “We got super lucky with all our amazing vendors,” says Melody. “Our photographer Lee of Life And Love Photography was with us since the beginning and just so helpful in every aspect, not just photography related. Our celebrant Caity was also exactly what we hoped for. She really calmed our nerves and made the ceremony fun and memorable. Also Melinda for bringing our wedding vision to life. I could go on ...” The bride also has some thoughts around a delicate issue. “Money is a topic I know hits hard for a lot of couples,” she says. “Nathan and I lost a lot of sleep over how much we were spending but, just like everything else, it works out in the end! Do have a budget and try to stick to it but don’t freak out if things don’t go exactly to plan every time. Remember to reach out to your vendors if you need to. They will do as much as they can to help you get the day you dream of while also keeping your budget in mind. Be honest and work with them.” The newlyweds kept the tropical luxe vibes strong with their choice of honeymoon locale: The Maldives. “It was breathtaking and just like in the movies!” says Melody. Sounds like the perfect pairing for this beautiful day at the beach. queenslandbrides.com.au 103

W E DDI NG S // G OL D C OA ST E L E N N I & J O N AT H A N M E D modern Greek traditions and modern love converge in this chic Gold Coast celebration. Opa! WORDS NICOLE DEUBLE VENUE THE ISLAND GOLD COAST PHOTOGRAPHY TWO BLUSHING PILGRIMS e love the double surprise. Case in point: Jonathan’s perfect proposal/family celebration for his love, Elenni. “We had a ‘work dinner’ with Jonathan’s team, but everyone cancelled last minute (of course they were all in on it),” says Elenni. “So we ended up having a nice date night and a walk after dinner, which was when he proposed! I was trying to call friends and family, but they were all screening my calls. Everything made sense when we got to the bar for a drink to celebrate because they were all waiting for us!” The couple decided to do things a little differently when it came to hosting their 300-strong guest list, looking to the Gold Coast for its holiday feel. In The Island they found a space with expansive reception options and boutique hotel accommodation. “We wanted to make our wedding a bit of a destination event,” says Elenni. “The Glasshouse at The Island was the perfect venue for a big party and the team was so easy to work with! Special thank you to our amazing coordinator Jenna — she really went above and beyond!” The big day honoured the couple’s shared Greek heritage, with a modern twist. “We did traditional blessings with our families in the morning and also got married in the Greek Orthodox church,” explains Elenni. “For the reception, we decided to change it up a bit and have more of a cocktail-style wedding. We were so happy with our decision because it was more relaxed and got the party started a lot earlier.” The couple set the tone with a stunning Kyha gown and custom Wil Valor suit. “We both wanted a clean and elegant look and could not have been happier,” says Elenni, who changed into a Rachel Gilbert mini once the formalities were over. Their wedding bands were another custom touch, W crafted by Steven James Jewellers. While they didn’t come to their stylist with a specific vision, “we knew we wanted the room to capture our Greek heritage,” says Elenni. “Nicole and Justine from Beautiful Weddings did the most incredible job in bringing this to life. They completely transformed The Glasshouse and put so much thought into every detail to make it unique — we even had real olive trees!” A sumptuous seafood station from Charis Seafoods gave a further nod to the Med, serving as a delicious focal point. And a reception highlight for the bride? “Smashing hundreds of plates on the dancefloor!” Relaxed, joyful and stress-free, the celebration was everything the newlyweds hoped and planned for, thanks in large part to their “incredible” team of vendors. Elenni has a nugget of advice for those about to embark on a similar journey. “Don’t get so caught up in the process of it all that it takes away from what the day is truly about,” she says. “For us, marriage is not just about a ring or a big wedding, it is a lifelong commitment to each other through the good and the bad times.” The wedding certainly had an extra layer of meaning for this pair, whose long-distance romance had played out with Elenni based on the Gold Coast and Jonathan in Brisbane. “We were so happy to start the next stage of our lives together,” says Elenni. “It is typical in our culture that you do not move in until you are married, so this was actually our first time living together. It was an easy transition for us, and we have loved being able to create our own home!” And to kick it off? A five-week honeymoon odyssey travelling to Singapore, Dubai, Jordan, Italy and Greece. “Jordan was a highlight for us both,” says Elenni “But overall, Greece will always be our favourite holiday destination.” queenslandbrides.com.au 107

W E DDI NG S // BR I SBA N E LOUISE & CAMERON E V E R after A chance online meeting led to wedding bells for this loved-up pair. WORDS NATASHA PAVEZ VENUE CUSTOMS HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY TOM HALL PHOTOGRAPHY here is a wonderfully regal edge to the wedding of Louise and Cameron. The historic venue, the elegant styling, the fairytale ballgown all evoke a sense of occasion that aligns with the couple’s “classic, timeless glamour” aesthetic. It’s a fitting celebration of a love story that dates back 16 years to when the pair first crossed paths on more contemporary medium: RSVP.com. “He was so easy to talk to on that first date,” Louise remembers. “There was an immediate attraction and we both felt we had something special.” While Cameron recalls feeling nervous, he also figured he had nothing to lose as Louise was “so out of his league”. But the connection was mutual and there certainly was something meant to last. Cameron popped the question last year at Cotton Tree Pier in Maroochydore on Louise’s birthday, setting the stage for the rest of their lives together. “It was very romantic,” says Louise. “I was looking out at the ocean and then I turned around and he was on one knee.” Opting for a classic feel, the couple chose two beloved Brisbane venues for their special day: St Stephen’s Cathedral for the ceremony and Customs House for the reception. “We only viewed one venue,” Louise reveals. “As soon as we walked into the main ballroom at Customs House, we knew we had to get married there. We loved that it was an iconic Brisbane building with a rich history, and its location, right on the Brisbane River, is exceptional.” It matched perfectly with the pair’s preferred aesthetic, and even gave a nod to vintage and royal weddings — a personal favourite of Louise, who also looked to that style for her gown. The Belle et Blanc satin ballgown might not have been her first choice, but as soon as she tried it on, the bride-to-be knew it was the one. “It had that wow factor,” she remembers. “I felt glamorous but also very comfortable and I loved the beauty in its simplicity.” T Although the couple would keep to traditions throughout the day, they added a fun little twist as they walked into the reception with their bridal party. Or should we say, danced? “Each of our bridal party couples danced into the ballroom to a song of their choosing!” says Louise. “It was the most fun part of the night. Our guests loved it.” For other couples planning their dream day, Louise and Cameron have some sage words of advice: namely, embrace those imperfections. “Things will go wrong,” says Louise, “so try to let go of any perfectionist tendencies as much as you can!” She’s talking from experience, having realised her veil was torn only 15 minutes before leaving for the ceremony. Luckily, hair artist Leigh McCoy hid the damage by expertly weaving the veil into Louise’s hair. You would never guess! This moment of quick thinking captures the couple’s experience with their entire team of vendors, “They were all truly outstanding!” says Louise. “For the lasting memories we are so grateful to our photographer Tom Hall and videographers, Jack and Amy Paton from Twelve08studios.” It’s no secret that planning a wedding can be both fun and exhausting, and the newlyweds were committed to making their honeymoon about pure relaxation. They escaped on a romantic cruise around Vanuatu and Fiji, luxuriating in a trip where every whim was taken care of. The pair recommend it after months of wedding obsession and “decision fatigue”. “Everything’s already structured and planned, and you don’t have to do a thing once you’re on the ship!” Louise laughs. “As much as I loved the aesthetic side of planning a wedding, it was nice to be able to just enjoy each other and our lives without the intense focus of a wedding.” And enjoying their life together is just what the couple plans to do — relaxed, lazy days together, enjoying the simple things in life, and soaking up every moment of love and friendship. It is, says Louise, their “promise of forever.” queenslandbrides.com.au 111

W E DDI NG S // BR I SBA N E SHANNON & HAISAM A J O U R N E Y of love This colourful and joyous multi-day wedding blends Indian customs with a dash of Spanish flair, ushering in a new chapter of adventures. WORDS NATASHA PAVEZ VENUE CEDAR CREEK LODGES & FACTORY 51 PHOTOGRAPHY CLOUD CATCHER STUDIO W e don’t often hear from the guys with our Real Wedding stories, but today, groom Haisam shares some beautiful thoughts about his wedding and his beloved bride Shannon. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s go back to a party a few years before the special day, when the pair were each busy finishing their degrees. “If only I could say I made a flawless first impression,” says Haisam. “To be honest, I fumbled our first meeting, as she’ll be the first to tell you with a playful chuckle.” He was spellbound from the moment he saw Shannon, and from then on, did all he could to be by her side. “As soon as I saw her, I knew I was in trouble,” he admits. Navigating life after university and then the challenges of a long-distance relationship only proved to strengthen the couple’s bond, and Haisam quickly knew that Shannon was the woman he wanted to spend his life with. Plans for a proposal brewed. “We had planned a trip to visit my family in the Maldives,” Haisam says. His relatives immediately knew the pair were destined to last, and so, with blessings from both sides of the family, Haisam took Shannon for a wander to a gazebo overlooking the water, the perfect place for a sunset proposal. “Shannon was both suspicious and excited,” says Haisam. “In a speech that might have been overly long, I knelt before her, ring in hand, and asked the question.” Shannon’s joyful yes finally put those forever plans in motion. “We initially planned to get married in New Zealand because that’s where we met and where our family was, but plans changed!” says Haisam. Instead, the couple found a destination wedding setting to ignite Shannon’s creative spirit: Cedar Creek Lodges. Her dream was to transform the lush Tamborine Mountain sanctuary into a fairytale escape, complete with a traditional Mandap (a pillared structure that serves as the wedding altar). “A palace within the rainforest’s embrace” as Haisam describes it. A fusion of Hindu customs, the couple’s glorious ceremony was preceded by two days of traditional festivities. “These days were filled with rituals that symbolised our preparation for marriage and the heartwarming acceptance of both families into each other’s lives,” says Haisam. “Those moments were truly unforgettable.” With their long-awaited union formalised, the newlyweds had a chance to celebrate with their 60 cherished friends and family who had arrived from all corners of the world to join them. And Shannon’s creativity had another chance to shine at the reception. “We had watched Bullet Train, which features a mesmerising scene depicting a Mexican wedding,” explains Haisam. “Shannon fell head over heels for the style.” Having locked in a Spanish Romance aesthetic, the bride just needed the right place to bring her vision to life. Factory 51 would take care of providing the guests with a delicious feast, and also ensured the venue aligned with Shannon’s vision by pointing the couple in the direction of stylist Gemma from Borrowed Event Hire. The couple chose to honour their heritage once more on the (epic!) dancefloor, dancing to Main Agair Kahoon from Bollywood film Om Shanti Om. “If you look closely in the wedding video, you’ll see me singing the song to Shannon, much to her delight,” says Haisam. After the energy and excitement of their wedding, the couple relaxed with a honeymoon in Bali, indulging in private villa accommodation, memorable dining, and precious newlywed moments. “Beyond the luxurious accommodations and exquisite dining, what truly excited us was the prospect of uninterrupted time together,” says Haisam. “We yearned to relax, rejuvenate, and dream about the countless adventures awaiting us in married life. I must confess, calling her “my wife” fills me with boundless joy. It’s a title I will never tire of. My wife, Shannon—what an incredible journey we’ve embarked upon!” Excuse us while we melt a little inside ... queenslandbrides.com.au 115

W E DDI NG S // BR I SBA N E ELLIE & ISA AC LO V E bubble Radiating love and laughter, this Brisbane wedding fuses Greek traditions with a classic country-club feel. WORDS NICOLE DEUBLE VENUE VICTORIA PARK PHOTOGRAPHY TWO BLUSHING PILGRIMS llie and Isaac have packed a lot into their seven years together — travelling around the world, demolishing and rebuilding a home, and adding rottweiler Duke to the family — but a wedding was always going to be the cherry on top. Isaac mapped out the perfect proposal for his coast-loving queen: a Noosa picnic. But the covid lockdowns of 2021 scuttled those plans, inspiring an impromptu moment at home before dinner (they managed to enjoy that planned Noosa picnic soon after). The answer was the same either way: a big YES! to herald the start of an exciting new chapter for the Brisbane-based pair. To honour Ellie’s heritage, the couple knew they wanted a traditional ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Church of St George. And when they attended a charity ball at Brisbane’s Victoria Park, the second piece of the puzzle fell into place and they eventually booked the venue’s spectacular Marquee. “The beautiful green scenery, and city background is great for photos, and we loved how open the inside/outside area is,” says Ellie. “A big tick for both of us was the food, which was what originally drew us to the venue. The Marquee also has its own massive bar and a deck with a stage so our band could play during canapes.” A fun bonus was the use of the venue’s golf buggies for their photocall. The cascading tiers of Ellie’s darb bridal couture gown delivered an exquisite focal point while the day’s styling leaned into a timeless, monochrome aesthetic. Although the bride says she’s usually a “colour person”, the couple’s research eventually drew them towards a more minimalist feel with masses of white florals and a pop of colour in the blush bridemaid gowns. “All our stationery and signage was E black-and-white and our guest favors were clear acrylic boxes with our I/E logo printed on the front,” says Ellie. “Our florist and I spoke a lot about incorporating bright, green foliage to create a fresh, tropical feel at our reception. We love the coast so wanted to incorporate that as well as the traditional feel of having a church ceremony.” Masses of candles helped create that intimate feel while a dancefloor and elevated bridal table, installed by Staging Creations, meant the couple and their crew could feel connected to other guests. A clever touch? “We made our cake the centerpiece of our dancefloor and our dessert, which was great as the whole cake got eaten and nothing went to waste,” says Ellie. “We loved how our room came together!” From their emotional Greek ceremony to their riotous dancefloor, the couple’s day was made extra special by having 200 of their favourite people in one place. “We had guests travel from all over Australia and the Netherlands, so to have them all together celebrating our day felt very special and a very surreal at times,” says Ellie. “We loved our ceremony in the Greek Church, having that tradition from my family, but also the sunset photos in the hills at Victoria Park, something very special for Isaac. We also loved everyone joining in the Greek dancing!” The bride also has some simple advice for couples about celebrate their own perfect day. “Soak it all up!!” she says. “From the night before and morning-of with your bridal party, parents, and family, to your last song at your reception, enjoy it all. Looking back, we have both said: yes, the day went fast, but it definitely didn’t fly by. We made the most of our whole day and appreciated all the little moments. Our photos say it all — we couldn’t keep the smiles off our faces.” queenslandbrides.com.au 119

W E DDI NG S // S C E N IC R I M MOLLIE & BROC C O U N T R Y romance Mollie & Broc brought their love story, favourite people, and a little DIY creativity to their intimate celebration in Queensland’s charming Scenic Rim township of Kalbar. WORDS NATASHA PAVEZ PHOTOGRAPHY INC.MILL PHOTOGRAPHY VENUE WHITE CHAPEL, KALBAR hen Mollie and Broc first met on Tinder in 2017, they never guessed that one day they’d be promising each other forever in a country chapel. One thing they did know? There was definitely something between them. “We messaged for a couple of weeks and finally met for our first date,” Mollie recalls. “We both felt an instant connection and attraction the moment we saw each other.” Fast forward a few years, and the pair was nestled comfortably in their new home together with puppy Maya. What next? A proposal, naturally, perfectly timed during a weekend trip to the Maleny Hinterland. “We were hiking at Kondalilla Falls and stopped to have some lunch,” says Mollie. “Broc set up a tripod on some rocks to take some photos together in front of the waterfall, but instead, he recorded the proposal and almost cut himself out of the frame!” Mollie and Broc chose to celebrate with an intimate gathering of 24, knowing they wanted their special day to be witnessed by only the closest family. Finding a venue that would suit this number without feeling cavernous was a must, and the couple came across Queensland country gem White Chapel Kalbar at a wedding expo. “We knew we wanted to see it right away — it catered to smaller weddings, was allinclusive, and offered affordable packages,” says Mollie. “As soon as we visited, we fell instantly in love.” As well as a charming white timber chapel for their ceremony, the couple was delighted by their reception option: Black Hall. Tucked away behind the chapel, this former Sunday School has been transformed into a rustic yet elegant events space. Both venues captured that country-chic aesthetic Mollie had envisaged for her dream wedding. And to top it off? “The most convenient accommodation,” says Mollie. W “Our guests stayed in the new motel in town, and the venue’s stunning Herrmann House homestead fit our entire bridal party and was perfect for getting ready.” Inspired by Pinterest, the clever bride DIY-ed much of the event’s decor and decorations, including table florals picked up at the markets the day before and arranged in IKEA vases and mini pots filled with local Kalbar honey as guest gifts. Love that! The wedding day dawned with anticipation humming in the air. “We traditionally didn’t see each other until the ceremony,” says Mollie. “We wanted the lead-up to that moment of walking down the aisle to be special.” We love one little touch these two incorporated: gifting each other perfume and cologne, which would forever remind them of their day. This celebration kept love for family at the core with many heartfelt moments. Mollie would walk down the aisle with both her parents, the couple would touchingly light a candle in memory of loved ones, and the couple’s mothers would be their official witnesses. For the newlyweds, their magical sunset photocall would be another highlight. “Riding in an ATV around the property with our photographers and videographers was a memorable moment,” says Mollie who packed an extra bag of biodegradable confetti for the occasion. “We had so much fun and the photos turned out incredible.” The couple then flipped the script on their reception by cutting the cake first, before cosying up with guests for dinner at Black Hall. And the fun didn’t stop there. Mollie joined her troupe for a belly dance performance before keeping the dance vibes going with Broc. Their first dance to Ed Sheeran’s Perfect was learnt the week before (thanks YouTube)! The newlyweds then jetted off on a European adventure, spending five weeks in some of the most romantic spots on the continent — starting off in the City of Love, of course! queenslandbrides.com.au 123

W E DDI NG S // T OW NS V I L L E CATHARINA & CONNOR L E G A C Y of love This is a wedding decades in the making — at least, if you ask this couple’s family! WORDS NATASHA PAVEZ PHOTOGRAPHY ALYNE MEDIA VENUE PICNIC BAY SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB, THE STRAND TOWNSVILLE lthough this wedding might have plenty of history behind it, it has a thoroughly modern start: two people swiping right on Tinder, one first move, and the rest, as they say, is history. “After messaging day and night for a few weeks, we decided we both really wanted to meet and instantly enjoyed each other’s company,” says Catharina (Cat). It wasn’t until after the first date that the pair realised they had plenty in common, though. Their grandparents had been close friends for over 50 years, their parents had grown up together, and each had already met the other’s grandparents. Cat’s grandma fondly referred to Connor as the “tall, tea boy” due to his involvement in his mum’s charity events where he would pour the tea. “Our grandmas were beyond thrilled when we told them we were dating!” says Cat, explaining that her grandmother predicted wedding bells from the outset. “I told my Oma that we’d only been on one date so marriage was unlikely… but, as we know now, it wasn’t impossible.” And when those wedding bells rang, Cat and Connor knew just what sort of day they’d have. “We both wanted our wedding to be fun, laid-back, minimalist, and outdoors with festoon lighting,” Cat explains. “Our goal was to create an event with a great atmosphere and drinks free-flowing. Once we knew what ‘vibe’ we were going with, we spoke to our amazing florist, Jerika from Thorny Florist, who instantly understood what we were imagining and began collaborating with us via Pinterest.” The Burke St Headlands and The Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Club (both on Townsville’s iconic Strand) were the perfect pairing for a relaxed wedding close to home — a bonus for the couple, who wanted to make sure their beloved grandparents could be there to finally see the A McGovern-Offermans wedding play out. “Our wedding was 50+ years in the making, so we felt it was only right to ask our grandmas to be our official witnesses and sign the marriage certificate with us,” notes Cat. As the couple only wanted to include traditions meaningful to them, they sought out vendors who would create a day that was uniquely Cat and Connor. Celebrant Abbey Chivers rose to the occasion. “She was absolutely phenomenal,” Cat enthuses. “She created a ceremony that perfectly summed us up.” They also chose a bridal party of one — Cat’s six-year-old daughter, Lola. “Partially because Connor has been a groomsman so many times (15+!) selection would be impossible,” explains Cat. “And also because Lola is the only person we felt passionately about having with us. She took on the title of Mini Bridesmaid and absolutely smashed it!” Cat’s gown would also draw on a family connection; as the niece of bridal designer Wendy Makin, Cat had plenty of time to dream up her perfect gown, and knew exactly where to find it. “Wendy used to give my cousins and I templates to design our dream gowns,” she explains. The ‘Piper’ fit Cat’s modern bridal dreams, classic and chic with a hint of structure, but her Watters reception dress (also sourced through Wendy Makin) nodded to those childhood designs: party-ready with plenty of sparkle, and ideal for carving up the dancefloor with Lola. Not to be left out, Connor also switched up his look for the reception, donning a sparkly black ‘party jacket’. We always ask our couples what their marriage means, beyond the bling and the big day. Cat and Connor tied the knot with the future firmly in mind. “To us, marriage means making a promise to choose each other through all of life’s stages and challenges, not just when it feels as easy as it does now,” says Cat. Here’s to the decades ahead! queenslandbrides.com.au 127
