It is one of the most important cities in the country because the main institutions of the federal government are located there. The city is situated on the eastern coast of the United States, along the Potomac River. Washington, D.C. is famous for its history, monuments, museums, parks and important government buildings. It is also a popular destination for tourists from many different countries. History of Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. was established as the capital of the United States in the late eighteenth century. The city was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. In 1790, the Residence Act provided for the creation of a permanent national capital. The location was chosen along the Potomac River, between important regions of the early United States. The capital later became an important center of American political and national history. The Name and Location The abbreviation D.C. means District of Columbia. Washington is not part of a U.S. state; it is a federal district. The city is located between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The Potomac River forms part of its western and southern boundary. The National Mall is a large open area where several important monuments and museums are located. The Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial are also important places
to visit. Museums and Culture The city is well known for its museums and cultural institutions. Many of them are part of the Smithsonian Institution.
