Dear friends!
Before you is the new edition of a famous manual, based on a textbook published
in the USSR in the 1980s, for which there was an unprecedented demand from young
players and their instructors.
The book is intended for the instruction of children by teachers or parents, and
is aimed at quite a lengthy teaching period, beginning with the very rudiments of the
game.
For ease of use the present edition has been divided into two volumes, to which
significant corrections and additions have been made.
The book will be extremely useful, both for independent work, and for study in
schools or in clubs.
I am sure that this ‘Manual of chess combinations’ will afford genuine pleasure
to those who appreciate chess art, and will contribute to the development of future
masters and grandmasters and to the harmonious education of young players

Front the Author
This book is intended for young chess players who are taking their very first Steps in this
intellectual and fascinating game. Chess is a battle of minds, in which the player who wins is
the one who is more clever, more knowledgeable and more skilful.
Not all of us can achieve mastery in chess, but a study of chess undoubtedly brings
benefit to everyone. It develops logical and consistent thinking, concentration and the ability
to analyse situations in chess and in life, and it also helps to strengthen a player’s character.
Chess is a difficult activity, which demands great efforts of mind and will, and also a
great expenditure of time. To compete successfully in competitions, constant study is required.
But first you must learn to see simple combinations, and in this you should be helped by the
present book.
How should it be used? You should try and solve all the exercises without using a board.
Düring one lesson it is recommended that you try to solve between 6 and 30 positions. The
examples are arranged in increasing Order of difficulty and are divided into several levels.
Altogether the two volumes contain 1320 test positions. The teacher may arrange a plan of
study, based on each Student having a copy of this book. I hope that all readers will successfully
grasp the basics of chess and will then proceed further along the difficult and interesting
path of chess mastery.
erfordert. Wer im Schach erfolgreich sein will, muss ständig weiterlernen. Vor allem muss
man einfache Kombinationen schnell erfassen. Hier will Ihnen dieses Lehrbuch helfen.
