Preface
This collection contains 86 of my problems, in which I managed to employ the untamed powers of
the chess pieces in service of strictly defined ideas. Behind each diagram in this booklet lies a
history of struggle with the pieces, their laws and limitations, and their capricious behavior - a
struggle characterized by moments of hope, excitement, joy and despair. The reconstruction of such
history, i.e. the creative process itself, could be of no less interest than the end product, even
granting it a further dimension. For this, however, a different kind of effort would be needed, and a
lot more space... Meanwhile, the reader is invited to try and sense something of that process by
studying the only testimony given here - the end positions.
The problems appear in chronological order, undivided into groups. The conventional subdivision
into types seemed too artificial, while my preferable division by main ideas (implied by the title) was
beyond the scope of this booklet. I hope the index could be helpful in this direction.
Some of the problems in this collection are co-productions, and I shall use the opportunity to thank
my composer-friends for the fascinating hours they granted me. Also I should like to thank Ram
Softer and Ofer Comay for valuable technical assistance in preparation of this material, and useful
suggestions.

DEFINITION OF FAIRY CONDITIONS
Reflexmate - Selfmate where each side is obliged to mate in one whenever possible.
Circe - The captured piece is reborn on its initial game array square. For bishops, rooks and
knights - the square of same color as the capture square; for pawns - the square on the file of
capture. If the rebirth square is occupied, the captured piece disappears.
Anticirce - The capturing piece is reborn according to the above rules, and the captured piece
disappears. If the rebirth square is occupied, the capture is illegal. The capture on the rebirth square
itself is illegal.
Madrasi - A unit (except king) "attacked" by an identical unit of opposite color is paralysed (cannot
move, capture, check etc.).
Madrasi Rl - Same as above, but the kings also obey the Madrasi rule.
Andernach Chess - A unit (except king) capturing an enemy unit changes color.
Grasshopper - A fairy piece which moves along ranks, files and diagonals by jumping one square
beyond the nearest piece on the line.
