hfm COVERSTORY
Model Hana Cross’s life transformed when
she was discovered as a teenager, resulting
in fronting campaigns for the world’s
biggest fashion brands. But, she says, it’s still
all about family and the charities she loves
hfm COVERSTORY
couted at the age of 18 on a shopping trip
with her mum has led to a successful modelling
career for Hana Cross. Working with the
industry’s biggest fashion houses, with invites
to glittering events and a number of high-profile
relationships, you’d expect her to have changed,
but she remains refreshingly down-to-earth.
When we speak to her on Zoom she’s sitting
cross-legged on her bed, she
wanted to meet in person, but
there was a train strike the day
we were due to speak. “I promise
if we’d met up I’d have put
on a really cute outfit,” she says
with genuine disappointment.
“I’ve just come back from
walking my dog, so I’m
basically wearing really baggy
sweatpants and a little
Re/Done tank top, which I love,
they are the best things ever.”
Originally from the Cotswolds, Hana concedes
she didn’t know much about modelling as a
child. At the time she was signed, she was studying
for her A-levels and considering university –
she planned to take business with equine studies,
or certainly something to do with animals.
“When I was scouted, I decided to give modelling
a chance and began travelling to London from the
Cotswolds pretty much four or five times a week.
All of a sudden I realised I wanted to move to the
city permanently to pursue my modelling career,
instead of going to university. I spoke to my mum
and she was very supportive, so I took it from there.”
Her first booking was a year-long contract with high
street brand, New Look. “The agency put me up for a
modelling competition and the prize was to become
the face of the brand. When I won I was super excited.
“It threw me in at the deep end, I was working
every day and learning the ropes as I went. I was
really nervous at first, but it was so much fun. I was
working with amazing people and meeting other
models. The experience gave me the confidence to
know this is what I wanted to do. I was very fortunate.”
Since then, Hana has worked for Valentino,
Missoni, Gucci Beauty and Hugo Boss. She has
starred in campaigns for high street meccas including
Mango, Bershka and Kurt Geiger and appeared on
the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, L’Officiel; and in
2019 she was shot by her then boyfriend, Brooklyn
Beckham, for the cover of Wonderland magazine.
It is easily apparent that Hana is a very sociable
person. She tells us that one of her favourite things
about the job is working with different people.
“And I also love that every shoot is different,
you’re working with new teams and travelling
to all these locations – and being able to create
something really nice.”
As well as becoming friends with other models,
through the years she has forged friendships
with photographers and stylists, as well as actors.
“Everyone in this industry rolls in similar circles.
So we all go to the same events and places and have
date nights out, it’s really fun.”
On the flipside, she tells us that the job has
its ups and downs. “It can be empowering and
help build confidence, but there’s also a lot of stuff
that goes on behind the scenes that people on the
outside don’t see; because it is not talked about.
You see models on social media
and it looks glamorous, but on the
other side of that we are constantly
being rejected.
“When I first started modelling,
I was told I was too fat and needed
to lose weight, or I’m too short
and I’m not going to be able to
do this. A big part of the job is
going to castings and often you
are told ‘no’ more than ‘yes’. So
you really have to become resilient
and build a thick skin.
“I began to realise that it’s not personal to me, it
just means I might not be right for that specific job.
So I learnt to understand that and develop the
mindset that what’s meant to be will be – and to
keep working hard and being nice to everyone,
because what’s supposed to come my way will anyway.”
We ask her if this has improved more recently.
“The industry is definitely becoming way more
inclusive,” she confirms. “I’ve worked with so many
brands that use diverse models that are different sizes,
shapes and from many cultures. It is amazing to
‘IT CAN BE

out and doing healthy things in LA is the main
thing, ‘Let’s go for a hike and then go get a salad’,”
she laughs.
“There are so many beautiful hikes and I would
definitely say that when I’m there I step up my
appearance. It’s more polished than the UK and
everyone’s always looking cute and wearing their
best workout clothes, even for a hike.”
For someone that wasn’t interested in fashion as
a child, Hana has since raised the bar. “I absolutely
love fashion now. I have so many favourite designers,
like Valentino, who did an amazing couture show
in Rome, it was stunning. I also love Burberry and
Fendi is super cool. And when I went to the Cannes
Film Festival I wore an amazing dress by Missoni,
which was so exciting, it was incredible.”
She also loves vintage and will perpetually ask
friends for recommendations of the best shops
when she’s planning to travel somewhere new.
“There are so many amazing stores to find vintage
and I love looking. I went to Portobello recently
and Brick Lane... I love to have a scout there.
“Everywhere I’ve travelled I try to find the time
to source vintage. There are some amazing places
in LA. Recently I found a skirt and a Victoria’s Secret
top that I wore to Coachella with cowboy boots, of
course, which was super cute.” Her most recent
purchase, though, is a vintage Fendi handbag she
stumbled upon in London. “It’s incredible, I was so
happy to find it. My mum was like, ‘You need this bag’.”
Her go-to look changes “all of the time” and
depends on what she’s doing. “I’m either super
girly or super boyish, it’s one or the other. I’m often
just chill in sweatpants, a T-shirt and trainers. You
won’t really see me in a pair of skinny jeans unless
it’s for work, I don’t really like anything that’s too
tight and uncomfortable.
“Going out, I’ll wear straight-leg jeans with heels
and a vintage top. I feel like I change ten times before
I leave the house. I’m like, ‘What if I end up going
here and doing that – will I be comfortable dancing?’”
Some of the events that are close to her heart
are organised by Unicef and AmfAR. “I’ve been
supporting those charities for a few years now. This
year I went to AmfAR at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc
in Cannes, it was incredible. They raised $19 million
for AIDS research, which is insane.
“And then there is the Unicef LuisaViaRoma
Gala, which raises money for children in need. This
year they were especially focused on the situation
in Ukraine and the kids suffering over there.
“I enjoy being able to support charities and
watching everyone come together at these amazing
auctions and see everyone donate to help.”
Before she leaves, we ask her what her Christmas
will look like this year. “I love Christmas, for me it’s
about spending time with my family in London.”
And does she know what gifts she would like to
receive? “There’s nothing that I specifically want,
but just something that’s personal to me that’s had
thought put into it.” ■

PREEN BY
THORNTON BREGAZZI
Justin Thornton shares the inspiration behind this season and their latest collaboration…
Tell us about your AW22 collection...
We were inspired by diversity in British youth
couture. From punks to new romantics to club kids.
Why did you use dancers rather than models?
We wanted to do a show that was more of an
experience and to highlight ballet, performing
arts and the club industry. They had all been
hard hit by the pandemic, so we chose the
iconic Heaven nightclub to show in.
How did the Bouclème scarf collaboration occur?
Thea and I felt it was a great opportunity to work
with a brand that focuses on natural haircare
solutions. We scaled up our scarf size to make

sure it can be multi-adaptable for curls as well
as become a beautiful gift for Christmas.
You’ve dressed A-listers and royalty. Who would
you most love to see wearing your designs next?
Seeing someone wearing our designs at a party,
or out for dinner, is when we get the most thrill!
What has been your career highlight so far?
There have been so many highlights. Visiting Michelle
Obama at the White House was very special.
How does being life partners and in business
together set you apart?
We just work in our own organic way, enjoying
the challenges and loving life.

hen Huishan Zhang arrived in
London ahead of his AW22
fashion show earlier this year, he
hadn’t stepped foot in the capital
since the pandemic. And because he
and his team were unsure it would
happen at all, they opted for an intimate presentation.
“When we heard we could do the show at the last
minute we were very excited to meet friends, clients and
the press again – it was a wonderful moment to share,” the
Chinese-born designer tells us from his atelier in Qingdao,
when we speak on Zoom. “It was a small show that almost
went back to the roots of the house and where we started.”
Looking for “a new generation of couture client” for
the romantic collection, he imagined how Italian society
darling Marella Agnelli, an aristocrat and patron of the
arts, and Babe Paley, a 20th-century American tastemaker,
both who were friends of novelist Truman Capote,
would dress today. The show itself celebrated a return
to pre-pandemic glamour, “It was really about bringing
back that energy”.
On his return to China, Huishan, who produces four
collections a year, began work on his resort 2023
collection (shown left), which examines exaggerated
curves and corsetry, drawing inspiration from another two
Italian sirens from the 50s, film stars Silvana Mangano and
Anna Magnani.
Looking again to a new youth culture, he then honed
this aesthetic, giving it a 90s minimalistic twist. The silk
outerwear is a nod to the original MA-1 bomber jacket,
party pieces include a lime-yellow sequinned dress and
a crystal-embellished crêpe dress that flounces at the
hips, exaggerating the female form, and a raw indigo
corseted denim jacket is cinched at the waist creating
an hourglass silhouette.
While studying fashion design and pattern-cutting
at Central Saint Martins, his year group were given a
Christian Dior study as their final project. He and his
classmates were astonished to be briefed by Delphine
Arnault, the then deputy chief of the fashion house.
She was so impressed with Huishan that she handpicked
him to spend his third year working first in leather
goods and then Dior’s haute couture atelier.
He was so enchanted by the garments he saw that the
experience inspired him to set up his own label in 2011.
“Seeing all these beautiful things made me realise my
dream. It made me really want to make a unique brand
for myself and actually apply my own vision to it.”
At the time, Chinese luxury brands were rare,
especially anything coming from an individual designer.
“I felt it was something unique that I could bring to
the fashion world. I could merge what I had learnt from
the west with Chinese influences, to create a modern way
of presenting fashion.”
Many people talk about his east-meets-west aesthetic.
“I’m from China, but no matter how many years I have
lived overseas, that Asian way of thinking is, literally, in
my blood. I constantly seek to merge both worlds with
each other. I like to find harmonies and use fashion
as a medium to introduce them. I think that’s a really
powerful tool.”

And he hopes with the return of Shanghai Fashion Week,
Chinese fashion, “will be coming back in all its glory”.
Huishan has studios in his hometown of Qingdao
and in the basement below his boutique in London’s
Mayfair. He calls London his second home and he also
considers himself “a Londoner”, but it is important
for him to be near his family.
“I’m really close to them and, obviously, I do miss my
parents when I’m away. So it was important for me to
have studios in both places, so I could travel.” Normally,
he would go back to China once a month; and after
being there almost permanently for two years, he
hopes he can spend more time in London again soon.
Continuing to be recognised for his talent, after
presenting his graduate collection in 2010, he was
contacted by Mrs Joan Bernstein, the affable owner
of Browns. She is known for spotting fresh talent and
bought his graduation collection for the boutique –
a rite of passage for so many successful designers in
the past including Alexander McQueen, John Galliano,
Hussein Chalayan and Christopher Kane. “I felt like, is
this real? At the time I couldn’t believe it, it’s the thing
you only read about in books,” he enthuses.
And then, the same year, a body-conscious qipao
dress, associated with 20s Shanghai, and one of his
signature styles, was selected by the Victoria & Albert
Museum in London – to be placed in its permanent
spot in the East Asia collection.
He explains this string of fortuitous events meant
he was thrown in at the deep end. “It all came together
at once. It felt overwhelming, but also I thought, wow,
another thing – I can’t turn back now,” he tells us,
explaining how at the time he was still processing how
to contact people to do his PR, lawyers that might be
needed and how to order fabric in smaller quantities.
“I had all these pressures coming at me and didn’t
feel prepared, then this all happened. But there was no
way I could hide and find another job, and I thought,

his year, to celebrate the
festive season, two legendary
houses have come together.
In a perfect pairing –
Dior and Harrods have had
strong ties for nearly 70
years – and both heritage brands are
associated with a love of Christmas.
Making this year a magical one,
from November 10 to January 3,
Dior has dreamt up a theatrical
mise-en-scène, creating an enchanted
atmosphere and immersive
experience on each floor of the
prestigious London department
store – marking the first time in
its 173-year history
that a luxury brand
has ‘taken over’
the façade, lighting
and 44 windows.
The inspiration
stems from drawings
by contemporary
Italian artist, Pietro Ruffo.
The Roman’s graphic
Déploie tes Ailes (spread your
wings) and Rêve d’Infini
(dream of infinity) sketches feature on the
cruise 23 collection and evoke the Dior
‘around the world’ ethos, which embodies
Monsieur Christian Dior’s desire to allow
his collections to transcend borders.
The multi-faceted artist, who works with
watercolour, sculpture and drawing has
been a long-standing friend of the fashion
house, often working with Maria Grazia
Chiuri, creative director at Dior.
The lucky star in a world map links the
earth and sky, continents and constellations,
and the flora and fauna prints have been
reinterpreted in gold for the holiday season
and are featured on the Dior Book tote,
trunks and scarves – all exclusive to Harrods.
Pietro’s designs will also decorate the
façade and windows of the Brompton
Road, Knightsbridge, emporium; along
with a grand installation reinterpreting
the compass rose – a symbol treasured
by the founding couturier.
Harrods began lighting
the exterior of its illustrious
building for Christmas in 1959, with
1,100 bulbs – a tradition that is now
extended to all-year round. This year,
adding some Dior Christmas sparkle, a
dazzling interplay of lights that feature the
classic Dior emblem, the Dior gold star,
Dior’s single-breasted Bar jacket and the
Louis XVI-style Medallion chair, which
Christian Dior personally chose for
seating at his fashion shows, are all
included in the display. Additionally,
Dior by Starck versions of this storied
chair can be purchased exclusively in-store.
Harrods’ famous window displays have
long been a destination in themselves
for day-trippers wishing to take in the
Harrods festive spirit. This year they
include a series of tableaux vivants (living
pictures) decorated with gingerbread,
caramel, candied fruit, balloons and
stars; with each of Dior’s various universes,
including fashion and accessories (both
women’s and men’s), baby, homeware,
fine jewellery, watches and perfume,
given their own frame.
Continuing the theme inside the store,
the grand entrance features Pietro Ruffo’s
lucky star pendants, which are suspended
from the ceiling and visitors walk through
glittering archways to ascend
and descend the store’s
famous escalators.
The two pop-ups (a gift
shop and ready-to-wear and
accessories store) and Dior
micro-village have been
designed with gingerbread
finishes. An exhibition will
take place in these three
spaces representing three
symbolic buildings that
epitomise the spirit of the brand: 30
Montaigne in Paris, Granville in Normandy
and La Colle Noire – Christian Dior’s
former residence in the south of France.
Playing around with scale, the sizings
within the exhibition are disproportionate
– from giant to micro and miniature. Light,
sound and video projections that recreate
each moment of the day from sunrise to
sunset will play on a 15-minute rotation.
Those looking for a light refreshment
can head to the Dior cafe, which is also
constructed in gingerbread form. Edible
gingerbread cookies can be purchased
with designs including perfume bottles, a
saddle, a ship, the Bar jacket and Dior star.
We’d imagine that Monsieur Dior, a
fervent Anglophile, who dressed Princess
Margaret and Margot Fonteyn, and
had links with Cecil Beaton and, of
course, Harrods itself, would approve
of the marrying of these two houses that
have come together to keep the Dior
Christmas dream alive.

hristian Louboutin, the shoe designer
responsible for bringing stilettos back into
fashion in the 90s and 00s; who has since
added handbags, belts, purses, beauty and
men’s shoes and accessories to his self-named
brand’s storied repertoire, has a new product
category, launching this season.
“The idea for LoubiFamily was born during lockdown,”
he says of his new children’s range. “For the first time in
a long time, I had the chance to spend several months
in the same place with my closest friends, my daughters
and our dogs. I wanted to explore the idea of adulthood
for children and childhood for adults, transposing fabrics
and colours and playing with details.”
A starting point for the concept was first dreamt up by
Christian embracing the spirit of childhood, incorporating
bright primary colours and an imaginary world where
anything is possible. To present the collection created
through his own fanciful imagination, Christian produced
a comic book, where three playful cartoon superheroes
are the inspirational muses and stars of the story.
Super Loubi, a caped version of Christian, is the main
character. He is joined by Wonder Loubi, a powerful and
mysterious Louboutin woman, and Pilou, the fearless lemur
– Christian’s best friend in the comic and favourite animal.
Although Christian grew up in Paris, he was enchanted
with other cultures and travelled in Egypt and India as a
teenager. “I travelled the world reading Hergé’s Adventures
Of Tintin and comic heroes always inspired me.”
After working for various fashion houses, he set up his
own company in 1991, with the goal of making women feel
beautiful and their legs look as long as possible. When he
opened his first salon that same year, Princess Caroline of
Monaco was his first customer. A journalist overheard her
complimenting the store and published her comments,
which helped the brand’s early success.
However, it wasn’t long before the company’s popularity
grew enormously. Early clients included Diane von
Furstenberg and Catherine Deneuve; followed by Joan
Collins, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera,
Nicki Minaj, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker,

who wore a pair of Louboutins to her 1997 wedding to
Matthew Broderick and whose Sex And The City character
Carrie Bradshaw was a die-hard fan.
The brand’s signature shiny, red-lacquered sole (Pantone
18-1663), which is trademarked, was first produced in 1993
after he grabbed an assistant’s nail varnish and painted the
bottom of a pair of shoes.
About to welcome a new younger fanbase, first up in
the range is the Super Loubi, a take on the Louis women’s
sneaker. The style is available in comic-strip print or red
with neoprene superhero cap on the heel. Adapted for
children they feature oversized zip pullers or Velcro openings
hidden under laces. To define the left shoe from the right,
one half of Pilou the Lemur is illustrated on each shoe.
The Melodie Chick pump is a softer, more delicate
ballerina flat inspired by the women’s signature Hot Chick
pump. Carrying the same cut-out detail on the topside, this
version has an easy-to-use snap button, elasticated strap and
non-slip rubber sole – in red, naturally. Colourways include
three shades of nude and bright red.
For more glamorous events, the Melodie Strass is perfect.
A child-friendly take on Louboutin’s Follies Strass pump,
it features a strass dégradé on a sheer mesh upper and
is available in a kaleidoscope of
colours and various fabrications.
Flipping the mini-me concept
on its head is the maxi-me capsule
collection – an adult version of
shoes that were initially designed
for children. For both mother and
child, the Toy Toy range features
exaggerated laces and eyelets.
“From a design perspective,
sometimes it’s similar, as I translate
and adapt styles for adults on a
kid’s scale and sometimes it’s very
different, as I have to completely rework proportions, fabrics
and details to make it playful, practical and comfortable.”
As well as spending lockdown with his daughters, who
inspired this collection, Christian also bonded with his dogs.
Consequently, the new collection features adorable canine
accessories, including a lead, harness and collar with the
Christian Louboutin signature spikes, gems and crowns.
“The idea behind it is very related to my two daughters.
They’re twins, but completely different,” Christian tells us.
“This divergence in their characters is very
inspiring. And also, by my beloved dogs,
they are both Portuguese podengos and
they are also very different from each other.”

You probably won’t be shocked to find
out that stunning Eva is a model; a face
like that absolutely needs to be on
a billboard. She teeters on the edge
of supermodel status, having fronted
campaigns for some of the biggest and
the best and is perfectly at home on
a magazine cover. In her free time, Eva
is a dab hand at fashion design, a
budding DJ and has set up the Eva
Apio Foundation, an organisation that
works with young people in Uganda
and across Africa. When off-duty, Eva
plumps for slick and slinky slips in
neutral tones punctuated by neon
accessories and a trusty trench for a
red-carpet style that feels timeless yet
thoroughly modern. Jewellery is
stripped back and simple but impactful,
and stilettos only come in sky-high.

While 13-year-old us had our heart
set on growing up into Avril Lavigne,
hindsight leaves us wishing we’d
known that uber-cool glamorous goth
style, as worn with aplomb by South
Korean model Sora Choi, was an
option. We wouldn’t have wasted so
much time pairing men’s ties with vest

Next Top Model, Sora has featured
in over 70 international campaigns.
Her personal style is completely
cohesive and one likes to imagine that
her wardrobe is stocked with reliable,
interchangeable pieces. Plenty of
leather and studded accessories are
always welcome. Drop in a pearl necklace
or slip of lace to add touches of softness
throughout. For an overall look that

CIINDERELLA
BALTHAZAR
Is there anything more glorious than
a serving of retro leather, whether
golden brown or glossy black, topped
with a floral print so busy it would
make Donna Summer smile? Londonbased, emerging Belgian singersongwriter Ciinderella understood the
assignment when stocking her wardrobe
with leather midis and opulent velvet
loafers. Her wardrobe references the
70s, but is peppered with crisp pastels to
keep her looks fresher than their flowerpower predecessors. Blasts of bright
colour are most welcome and pile on
the gold jewellery with excess. A ladylike
handbag adds unexpected restraint to
the era that gave us baggy bell bottoms
and maxi dresses so voluminous
you could erect a tent under them.

Aged just 24, model Lauren Wasser
was rushed to hospital with toxic
shock syndrome, resulting in the
eventual amputation of both legs. Her
life was turned upside-down overnight.
Struggling with the prosthetic limbs
available, she decided to design her
own stunning gold, eye-catching
limbs, marrying function with form.
Resuming her place on the runway,
she threw heart and soul into the
narrative that there is no right way to
be beautiful, and has walked for Louis
Vuitton, Annakiki and Chromat. Her
style is casual, but not without thought.
There are sporty influences of course,
with a touch of nonchalant skater-boy
magic. Comfort is key, but Lauren’s style
feels more luxurious than track-ready.
The result? Perfect cool-girl styling.

FERREIRA
We’re not sure what’s in the water
down at the casting department at
HBO, but it must be seriously good
stuff, as the network’s sensational TV
show, Euphoria, has been churning
out some of the most exciting fresh
acting talent in years. Model and actress
Barbie Ferreira played Kat for the first
two series, and her Y2K costumes have
warranted Instagram feeds of their
own. But off-camera, Barbie’s style
also doesn’t disappoint. Drawn to
vintage-inspired pieces, she has strutted
the red carpet in Jonathan Simkhai
and Simone Rocha, but gives all of
her looks a gen-Z spin. Pair a colourclashing accessory with your ballgown,
or pick a flamboyant shoe to light a fire

A veil of liquid gold ripples
over the eye lids. Under light,
this molten pigment, a blend
of powder eyeshadow and
mixing medium, looks like its
moving and shifting around
on the skin (it’s not). Taking its
cue from costume make-up,
there are no neat demarcation
lines – the overblown application
breaches the brow bone and
spills out around the tear duct.
To give added structure and
dimension, the rest of the face
is subtly sculpted with a warm
bronze powder. The lips are
bolstered with layers of balletslipper pink in a satin gloss.

Pearls keep popping up on the
catwalk, we saw them at Givenchy,
Loewe and Simone Rocha. And
fashion’s ‘pearlcore’ obsession
presents make-up artists with
an opportunity to revisit these
iridescent accents on the face.
Here, a decorative crescent of
minuscule, flat-backed stones
draws focus to the eyes. To apply,
use a nail-dotting tool and eyelash
glue (wait until the glue is tacky
before pressing the pearl onto
your skin). And to off-set the
embellishment, define the lower
lashline with a kohl-coloured
pencil and brighten the cheeks
with a wash of pink blusher.

Use a thin
eyeliner brush,
dipped in
a liquid glitter
base, to dab on
the particles. Aim
for a tapered
tear shape and
finish with
a setting spray.
This make-up look has a
theatrical quality, but it channels
the sort of brooding, irreverent
ballerina you might see in a
Matthew Bourne production.
And it’s more wearable than it
appears. Opt for loose glitter, not
liquid. To make it look worn-in
and undone, don’t worry about
symmetry and set it against a
smoky lash line. Make sure you
mix dark particles in with gold
and burnished metallics. A mix
of pigments is incredibly
flattering because it picks out all
the flecks of colour in your iris.

hen three years ago
Annalisa Arrigoni was
relocating from Milan
to Treviglio, which
is halfway between
Milan and Bergamo,
she viewed an apartment that, although
perfectly designed, was too small for her
needs. The seller was interior designer and
architect Daniele Daminelli, from Studio
2046 – and this chance meeting created a
blueprint for the home she lives in today.
“I fell in love with his style,” she says
speaking to us on Zoom, on a windy
morning in Puglia. “I promised him that
even though the apartment didn’t work
for me, when I found one, I wanted him
to design it.”
During her ongoing property quest, she
viewed one she thought ideal, but it was
sold to someone else, leaving her feeling
“desperate”. That was until she stumbled
upon a two-bedroom property in a 50s
tower block called the Grattacielo – that
is Italian for skyscraper
– spanning eight floors,
it was the tallest building
in the area at that time.
It was built with a brick
façade and the interior
is marble. Ahead of its
time, every apartment
had an underfloor
heating system installed.
“When I saw the
apartment it changed
my mind about the other
one – and it was mine,”
she laughs, adding, “and I called Daniele
to say, ‘We can start the project’.”
Annalisa lives in the plush space with
her daughters Emma, five, and Celeste, two
(“Mimi and Lily as I call them”), boyfriend
Edoardo (“Who loves food, restaurants and
travelling, as much as me”), golden retriever
Apple (“Because I wanted to live in the Big
Apple”) and rabbit Stracciatella (named
after the bufala cheese).
Annalisa, who grew up in Treviglio, moved
to Milan aged 19. Her mother told her she
was old enough to live by herself and helped
with the rent on her first apartment. “This is
really strange in Italy,” she explains, laughing,
“because most mothers try to take care of
their children until they are at least 30 – it’s
crazy,” she adds, pulling a baffled face.
A love for interiors and art is nothing new
for Annalisa. “I have always been in love with
beauty in every shade and subject,” she says.
“When I was young I went for holidays with
my mum to Forte dei Marmi [a seaside town
in Tuscany]. My favourite thing to do there,
even as young as six or seven years old, was
to take the bike for an evening tour of
Roma Imperiale – the most beautiful
and historical neighbourhood, with its
magnificent gardens. I would take in
the incredible 19th-century villas.
Having lived in Milan for 12 years in Via
Vincenzo Monti (her favourite area), and
then Corso Sempione, she decided to move
back to her home town, so her mother could
help with childcare. “I work around the
clock. I leave home at 8am and arrive back
around 9pm, so it would be impossible to pay
a babysitter everyday for that amount of time.”
She studied history of arts, with
a special focus on medieval arts and
literature, at Cattolica University in Milan;
and then received a first class Masters
degree in communication for cultural
heritage from the Communication for
Art’s Institutes, Tourism and TV.
Now Annalisa heads up sponsorships
for international TV production company
Banijay Group, she has worked on Master
Chef Italia and they are currently filming
Bake Off Italia. It was whilst
working on MasterChef
that she developed an
enthusiasm for cooking.
“It was when I first lived
in Milan, and at the time
I wasn’t able to cook
anything. Then Carlo
Cracco, who is one of
Italy’s best chefs and
was working on the
show, called me into the
production kitchen to
show me how to make a
few things. It started as a hobby, but it’s now
a passion.” In fact, she tells us, she loves
cooking so much that the one thing she’d
have done differently in her apartment is
to have installed an industrial kitchen,
like those found in hotels and restaurants.
But there is nothing else she would
change, not least the densely-rich colour
palette of sage and aubergine. But, she
hasn’t always been so daring with colours.
“My previous home in Milan had
whitewashed walls. Everything was white,
in the end I was so bored with it.”
It was when she saw Daniele’s work she
decided to go the complete reverse. “I
thought it would be great to choose darker
colours for the whole place. And also match
in the furniture and design objects.”
One of her preferred designers is HansAgne Jakobsson as a source for her lamps
and furniture stores include textiles from
Society Limonata in Lecce and Di Mano
In Mano in Milan – a converted vintage
shop with a “secret” magazine for its regular
customers; but her favourite place is

HELLOFASHION.COM
his year has been a big
one for fashion designer
Anine Bing, whose LAborn womenswear label
turned ten. To celebrate the
landmark, she opened a second
London boutique in Chelsea,
and has new stores planned
for Miami, Austin and China.
She announced model Irina
Shayk as the face of her 2022
campaigns and has continued
to expand the brand with the
launch of a new resort category.
For her collections, the former
model, who is originally from
Denmark, mixes a Scandinavian
simplicity with an American
rock edge. Ten years ago, her
eponymous brand was born in
her garage in Silver Lake, with
a small collection featuring two
pairs of jeans, a white T-shirt
and a black leather jacket;
now it’s a one-stop shop for
clothing, accessories, swim
and sportswear. Here, she
tells us about her dream day…
My morning would be at
home in Montecito, California,
with my husband and kids.
I like to wake up early and
have a few moments to myself
to meditate and focus on my
intentions for the day ahead.
For my perfect breakfast I’d
have banana and maple
syrup pancakes with the family.
I try to take really good care
of my skin so my skincare
routine is really important to
me. I start by exfoliating with
a Dermalogica cleanser, which
I love as it’s so gentle. To
moisturise I use Crème de la Mer
and I finish with the Super Eye
Serum with Retinol 8 by Verso.
The kids and I also use
Supergoop! sunscreen every
day. Protecting my skin is my
number one priority, especially
living in sunny California.
Next I would go to Denmark
for a summer holiday with my
husband and children. We’d
visit our family who live there
and take some time to recharge
and relax. We’ll also do a
bit of site-seeing, as I love
visiting museums and exploring.
I especially love the Louisiana
Museum of Modern Art.
Growing up, my parents would
take my siblings and I there. We
loved running around its fantastic
outdoor sculpture park. Now
my own kids do the same.
I’d be wearing a pair of
jeans and a white T-shirt, then
throw on a blazer or oversized
sweater and finish off with a
statement boot – I always wear
the Anine Bing Wesley boot.
I don’t shop very often since I
only wear my own brand – but I
did buy a beautiful Hermès Kelly
bag the last time I was in Paris.
I’d lunch at Café Victor in
Copenhagen – it’s great for
people-watching and a nice
place to chill with a glass of
wine and great food. I’d order
the chicken salad followed by
a vanilla crème brûlée.
Then I’d change into our Jace
one-piece – it’s my current
favourite for the beach; I would
pair it with denim shorts and our
XL Rio tote, which is big enough
for all the kids’ beach essentials.
Like any woman running their
own business, my dream
downtime is always spent with
my children. So next, we’d go
on a hike or play backgammon
together. I love going to the
beach or hiking.
Nothing can beat eating at
home with my family. But I love
going to Lucky’s restaurant and
catching up with friends. It has
a fun, buzzy atmosphere… and
I’d definitely enjoy a great steak!
I’d go to sleep… early, it’s
usually by 10pm, after kissing
the kids goodnight. I’d be
sleeping at the Grand-Hotel du
Cap-Ferrat, a beautiful hotel in
the south of France. I stayed
there recently and fell in love.
